Paper-Based Biopolymer Seafood Packaging with Integrated Colorimetric Ammonia Detection for Intelligent Barrier Technologies.

There is a growing demand for bio-based intelligent packaging solutions to maintain and monitor food freshness. The bio-based material exhibits inadequate moisture resistance, making it unsuitable for its intended applications. In this work, coatings of shellac and a zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF 67) of various proportions are developed. Some formulations show that there is a high barrier protection against water, moisture, and oil to enhance the shelf life of packed food. The presence of ZIF 67 within shellac on coated paper exhibits ammonia sensitivity to detect the freshness of shr

Nanoformulation of essential oils, bio-polysaccharides (furcellaran, chitosan) and antimicrobial peptides (RW4, LL37) for application in the food industry - formation, stability and properties.

The food industry is actively seeking innovative approaches to enhance food quality and extend shelf life. To this end, we developed novel micro/nanoemulsion formulations that combine commercial essential oils (oregano, lemongrass, thyme, rosemary) with bio-polysaccharides (cationic chitosan and anionic furcellaran). These ingredients were chosen for their inherent antimicrobial properties, which are crucial for developing new preservation methods. The primary objective was to conduct a comprehensive physicochemical characterization of these novel nanoformulations, which integrate essential oi

A Novel Food-Derived Particle Enhances Sweet and Salty Taste Responses in Mice.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Reducing the dietary intake of sugar and salt is considered a key strategy for preventing the onset and progression of lifestyle-related diseases. However, these dietary interventions often compromise the taste of foods, which can reduce patient satisfaction. To address this challenge, we focused on novel food-derived particles (NFPs; patent number P7383867) consisting of lipid, α-cyclodextrin, and xanthan gum formulated as an emulsion with excellent retention and diffusion properties. METHODS: Here, we investigated the effects of NFPs on the taste responses of mice. R

Non-edible fruit seeds: nutritional profile, clinical aspects, and enrichment in functional foods and feeds.

Nowadays, fruits are gaining high demand due to their promising advantages on human health. Astonishingly, their by-products, that is, seeds and peels, account for 10-35% of fruit weight and are usually thrown as waste after consumption or processing. But it is neglected that fruit seeds also have functional properties and nutritional value, and thus could be utilized for dietary and therapeutic purposes, ultimately reducing the waste burden on the environment. Owing to these benefits, researchers have started to assess the nutritional value of different fruits seeds, in addition to the chemic

Prevalence of gastrointestinal disorders having an impact on tablet levothyroxine absorption: should this formulation still be considered as the first-line therapy?

PURPOSE: In patients with hypothyroidism, levothyroxine (LT4) is the treatment of choice, and tablets are the most commonly prescribed formulation. Despite multiple scenarios being reported in the literature with impaired tablet absorption and likely missed TSH targets, it is yet unclear what the implications are for clinical practice and the role of liquid solution (LS) and soft gel (SG) formulations. We have thus conducted a narrative review evaluating the prevalence within the general population of gastrointestinal disorders impacting tablet LT4 absorption. METHODS: PubMed and Google Schol

Physicochemical, thermal, mechanical, optical, and barrier characterization of chia (Salvia hispanica L.) mucilage-protein concentrate biodegradable films.

In this study, the effect of chia mucilage (CM) and protein concentrate (CPC) contents on the physicochemical, thermal, mechanical, and optical characteristics of developed films was evaluated. Films were prepared dissolving CM:CPC mixtures (1% w/v) in seven ratios (0:1, 1:4, 1:2, 1:1, 2:1, 4:1, 1:0). Microstructure of treatments with higher CM revealed the formation of polysaccharide granules. A semicrystalline behavior was manifested in 1:0, which decreased as CPC content in the formulations increased. Contact angle values obtained for 1:1 and 2:1 were the highest (61.24° and 62.44°), eviden
