The case of a newborn who had an umbilical catheter inserted in the intensive care unit is discussed. This catheter was meant to be inserted into the umbilical artery, but was instead inadvertently inserted into the umbilical vein. It crossed a patent foramen ovale into the left atrium. This fact was not known at the time of echocardiographic evaluation. At echocardiography, abnormal echoes within the left atrium were seen. Findings were typical for a catheter within the heart, and the umbilical catheter was subsequently withdrawn. There is a potential for mistaking the echocardiographic findi

Subdermal contraceptive implants are one of the effective and reversible methods of contraception available today. Implanon is a Saudi FDA-approved contraceptive that is commonly used by the Saudi population. Along with their hormonal side effects such as mood changes and acne, subdermal contraceptive implants can also lead to more life-threatening, albeit rare, mishaps, such as the deeper migration of them into the axillary and thoracic structures. Only a few cases exist in the literature regarding these rare complications. In this case report, we describe the case of a 31-year-old woman pres

BACKGROUND: Intravesical migration of an intrauterine device (IUD) is a rare occurrence. The IUD becomes the nidus for calcification. Three approaches to remove the device include the use of open cystolithotomy, transurethral grasping forceps, or minimally invasive laparoscopy.
CASE: A 50-year-old woman presented with vague abdominal pain and recurrent urinary tract infections. She was found to have an intravesical migration or malplacement of an IUD which was unretrievable 20 years ago and was encrusted with a calculus formation. We removed the foreign body through a transurethral approach a

Urinary tract interventions can lead to multiple complications in the renal collecting system, including retained foreign bodies from endourologic or percutaneous procedures, such as stents, nephrostomy tubes, and others. We report a case of very delayed erosion of embolization coils migrating into the renal pelvis, acting as a nidus for stone formation, causing mild obstruction and finally leading to gross hematuria roughly 18 years post transarterial embolization. History is significant for a remote unsuccessful endopyelotomy attempt that required an urgent embolization.

This case report details the accidental death of an elderly gentleman who was a passenger in a motor vehicle accident, the cause and mechanism of death being determined as cardiac tamponade due to a traumatic laceration of the ventricle. The forensic autopsy revealed as an adjunct finding a mechanical trauma to the descending colon, being a perforation of a colon diverticulum due to an ingested toothpick. The historical aspects of toothpicks, risk factors associated with the accidental ingestion of toothpicks and different clinical presentations associated with ingestion and peristaltic migrat

In women, IUDs produce alterations of the uterine environment in terms of a pronounced foreign body reaction. This biological response may interfere with steps of the reproductive process that normally take place before the ovum reaches the uterine cavity. In order to discuss this hypothesis on the mechanism of action of IUDs, this review is focussed on 1) detection in urine and blood of substances alleged to be specifically produced by the embryo, 2) migration of gametes in the female genital tract, and 3) microscopic features of ova recovered from the genital tract.

INTRODUCTION: Insertion of foreign bodies into the lower urinary tract by adults is an uncommon but clinically important presentation encountered by urologists and emergency providers across a range of motivations. Retained or migrated objects can lead to serious complications including infection, calculus formation, and urethral trauma, often necessitating careful and complex management.
METHODS: We conducted a scoping review following the PRISMA extension for Scoping Reviews. Because only published, de-identified case material was used, institutional review board approval was not required.

Gout tophi are characterised by foreign body granulomas consisting of mono- and multinucleated macrophages surrounding deposits of monosodium urate microcrystals. After primary formation, granulomas grow associated with degradation of the extracellular matrix. Based on this background, we have sought (1) to investigate whether during granuloma's growth new macrophages are recruited into the tophi, (2) to find in situ evidence for macrophages' active role in matrix degradation and (3) to examine whether shrunk cells seen within gout tophi are apoptotic. Immunohistochemistry showed that perivasc

Odontogenic maxillary sinusitis (OMS) is a condition presenting to both the dental and otolaryngologic practitioner. Common causes of OMS include dental implants, displacement of a maxillary tooth root tip during extraction, migration of materials used in root canal therapy or graft material in sinus lift procedure. A 68-year-old male patient presented with complaints of repeated episodes of sinusitis for about 3 months which was not responding to conservative management. He had undergone multiple dental procedures 5 months back. Limited cut CT Paranasal Sinus form peripheral centre was sugges

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Gastrointestinal tract perforations as a result of foreign body ingestion are rare. Most ingested foreign bodies pass the intestines without complications. However, in 1 % of cases intestinal perforation occurs. We present the case of a 56-year old patient with an extensive surgical medical history who presented at the emergency department with progressive abdominal pain two weeks after accidental SARS-CoV-2 swab ingestion.
CASE PRESENTATION: On presentation patient was tachycardic and had generalized abdominal tenderness. A CT scan showed free intraperitoneal air

BACKGROUND: A fish spike stuck in the throat is a common ear, nose, and throat (ENT) emergency. However, it is very rare for a fish spike to reach the thyroid tissue through the throat, which is very dangerous and can lead to pharyngeal fistula, cervical abscess, mediastinal abscess, and thyroid abscess. Proper and timely management can help reduce complications, especially in elderly patients.
CASE SUMMARY: In the case presented here, the causative factor was dentures, but improper management aggravated the condition. In the case presented here, an elderly woman with a history of accidentall

Introduction: Ectopic foreign bodies in the maxillary sinus occur rarely. Ectopic tooth eruption rarely occurs in the orbit, nasal cavity, maxillary sinus, and elsewhere. Ectopic eruption of teeth in the maxillary sinus is most commonly associated with wisdom teeth and is rarely associated with supernumerary teeth. This rare phenomenon may be accompanied by chronic recurrent sinusitis with headaches and facial pain. However, fibro-osseous lesions in the paranasal sinuses are discovered incidentally on X-ray images and are often asymptomatic. Osteoma is the most common fibro-osseous lesion that

PURPOSE: To report a case in of intravitreal silicone oil migration into the inferior orbit. Silicone oil tamponade is commonly used in retinal detachment repair and extrusion into the orbital tissues is very rare.
METHODS: A 70-year-old male with a remote history of repair of a right ruptured globe and retinal detachment surgery presented with progressive right lower eyelid edema. There was a known history of intravitreal silicone oil instillation and removal. An elective right inferior orbitotomy with excisional biopsy was performed.
RESULTS: Histopathology confirmed the presence of silico

BACKGROUND: Inferior vena cava (IVC) filter fracture and embolization are rare but serious complications. Cardiac migration, particularly transseptal migration into the left ventricle, is exceptionally uncommon and can mimic inflammatory cardiomyopathies.
CASE SUMMARY: A 73-year-old woman with a remote IVC filter presented with pleuritic chest pain and elevated troponin, initially treated as myopericarditis. Cross-sectional imaging revealed a metallic foreign body traversing the interventricular septum into the left ventricular apex, consistent with a fractured IVC filter strut. Both surgical

PURPOSE: Although bioabsorbable screws promise to degrade within months up to several years after implantation, often this does not happen. In fact, other problems such as screw breakage, tunnel enlargement, allergic or foreign body reactions, cyst or abscess formation, and delayed migration of "biodegradable" screws have been reported. This study aims to provide relevant basic science knowledge and recent insights concerning "biomaterials" currently used in fixation devices for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) repair. A systematic review on the topic of screw "migration" is provided.

Rod migration is a rare but potentially serious late complication of spinal instrumentation. A case of long-distance rod migration to the groin following anterior lumbar fusion for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis is presented. A 43-year-old female, who had undergone selective anterior lumbar fusion 20 years earlier, presented with progressive lumbar pain. Initial radiographs demonstrated screw loosening and rod dislodgment. Before the planned revision surgery, the patient re-presented with pain localized to the hip and groin. Imaging revealed distal migration of the rod toward the anterior asp

Chronic silicone embolism represents a rare complication associated with silicone breast implants. With the increasing number of breast augmentations and reconstructive surgeries performed worldwide, awareness of implant-related pulmonary pathology is becoming increasingly important. This issue gained more public attention after the Poly Implant Prothèse scandal, which involved the use of cheaper industrial-grade silicone with a significantly higher risk of implant rupture. Here, we present a 54-year-old woman with a history of bilateral implant rupture, to highlight implant-related complicati

Migration of a haemodialysis catheter is an uncommon complication that may compromise dialysis efficacy and patient safety. This report describes a case of haemodialysis catheter tip migration into the azygos vein. A man in his 40s presented with progressive dyspnoea and reduced extracorporeal blood flow during haemodialysis. Chest radiography revealed that both limbs of the left internal jugular tunnelled haemodialysis catheter had migrated to the right brachiocephalic vein and azygos vein, respectively, causing inefficient dialysis. The catheter was successfully repositioned using the modifi

BACKGROUND: Kirschner wires (K-wires) remain a simple and cost-effective option for clavicle fixation, especially in resource-limited settings. However, migration of K-wires is a rare but potentially fatal complication that can involve critical structures in the thorax, mediastinum, or neck. Preventive measures such as bending, burying, and early removal are essential but often overlooked. CASE PRESENTATION: A 35-year-old male underwent K-wire fixation for a displaced left clavicle fracture. Three months postoperatively, he presented with progressive shoulder pain and restricted motion. Imagin
