Frontoparietal pattern similarity analyses of cognitive control in monozygotic twins.

The ability to flexibly adapt thoughts and actions in a goal-directed manner appears to rely on cognitive control mechanisms that are strongly impacted by individual differences. A powerful research strategy for investigating the nature of individual variation is to study monozygotic (identical) twins. Evidence of twin effects have been observed in prior behavioral and neuroimaging studies, yet within the domain of cognitive control, it remains to be demonstrated that the neural underpinnings of such effects are specific and reliable. Here, we utilize a multi-task, within-subjects event-relate

Neurocognitive outcome in children with sickle cell disease after myeloimmunoablative conditioning and haploidentical hematopoietic stem cell transplantation: a non-randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Due to the risk of cerebral vascular injury, children and adolescents with high-risk sickle cell disease (SCD) experience neurocognitive decline over time. Haploidentical stem cell transplantation (HISCT) from human leukocyte antigen-matched sibling donors may slow or stop progression of neurocognitive changes. OBJECTIVES: The study is to determine if HISCT can ameliorate SCD-associated neurocognitive changes and prevent neurocognitive progression, determine which specific areas of neurocognitive functioning are particularly vulnerable to SCD, and determine if there are age-relate

A novel classification framework for genome-wide association study of whole brain MRI images using deep learning.

Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) have been widely applied in the neuroimaging field to discover genetic variants associated with brain-related traits. So far, almost all GWASs conducted in neuroimaging genetics are performed on univariate quantitative features summarized from brain images. On the other hand, powerful deep learning technologies have dramatically improved our ability to classify images. In this study, we proposed and implemented a novel machine learning strategy for systematically identifying genetic variants that lead to detectable nuances on Magnetic Resonance Images (M

Heterogeneous neuroimaging findings in obsessive-compulsive disorder converge to a common brain network using coordinate network mapping.

Neuroimaging studies in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) have yielded heterogeneous findings, limiting efforts to localize OCD to specific brain regions or networks. This study applied coordinate network mapping (CNM) to test whether these distributed abnormalities converge onto a common brain network and to explore the biological substrates of this network through associations with neurotransmitter systems. We systematically reviewed and extracted coordinates of significant clusters from 66 Gy matter volume (GMV) and resting-state activity studies involving 3123 patients with OCD and 3116

The correlation of retinal neurodegeneration and brain degeneration in patients with Alzheimer's disease using optical coherence tomography angiography and MRI.

INTRODUCTION: Pathological changes in Alzheimer's disease can cause retina and optic nerve degeneration. The retinal changes are correlated with cognitive function. This study aimed to explore the relationship of retinal differences with neuroimaging in patients with Alzheimer's disease, analyze the association of cognitive function with retinal structure and vascular density, and identify potential additional biomarkers for early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease. METHOD: We performed magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans and neuropsychological assessments in 28 patients with mild Alzheimer'

Neuroimaging Correlates of 3 Distinct Physical-Cognitive Phenotypes in Cognitively Normal Older Adults: The Gothenburg H70 Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Individuals aged 70 and older frequently experience an increased risk of deficits in both physical and cognitive functions. However, the natural progression and interrelationship of these deficits, as well as their neurologic correlates, remain unclear. We aimed to classify the data-driven physical-cognitive phenotypes and then investigate their associations with neuroimaging markers. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 70-year-old participants from the Gothenburg H70 Birth Cohort (2014-2016). Based on physical performance (grip strength, balance, walking s

A spatially constrained independent component analysis jointly informed by structural and functional network connectivity.

There are a growing number of neuroimaging studies motivating joint structural and functional brain connectivity. Brain connectivity of different modalities provides insight into brain functional organization by leveraging complementary information, especially for brain disorders such as schizophrenia. In this paper, we propose a multi-modal independent component analysis (ICA) model that utilizes information from both structural and functional brain connectivity guided by spatial maps to estimate intrinsic connectivity networks (ICNs). Structural connectivity is estimated through whole-brain

BrainInsights: a comprehensive framework for pre-processing, analysis, and interpretation of neuroimaging data using traditional statistics and machine learning.

Neuroimaging presents us with an in-depth understanding about brain structure and function, yet the data complexity poses significant analytical challenges. Current frameworks suffer from issues such as scalability, poor integration with traditional statistics and a need for a programing background, which hinder researchers from focusing on neuroscience questions. To address these limitations, we present BrainInsights, an integrated and automated GUI-based pipeline ecosystem designed to facilitate the analysis of multi-modal or multi-parametric neuroimaging data in a flexible way. The framewor

From Molecule to Meaning: Neuronopathic Biomarkers and Clinical Relevance in GM1.

GM1 gangliosidosis is a rare, progressively neurodegenerative lysosomal storage disorder characterized by profound central nervous system involvement and substantial clinical heterogeneity. The development of reliable biomarkers is essential for tracking disease progression, stratifying patients, and advancing clinical trial readiness. Primary substrate markers, including cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) GM1 ganglioside and related lysosphingolipids, provide direct biochemical indices of lysosomal dysfunction. Emerging glycan signatures may further reflect disruptions in glycosylation pathways and re

Increased subcortical brain activity in anxious but not depressed individuals.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety and depressive symptoms usually co-occur. Neuroimaging abnormalities in patients with depression and anxiety disorders are therefore related to a combination of symptoms. Here, we used a large population study to select individuals with anxiety, depressive, or both anxiety and depressive symptoms to identify whether neuroimaging differences are unique or shared between anxiety and depressive symptoms. METHODS: We selected four groups of 200 individuals (anxiety, depression, anxiety and depression, controls) from the UK Biobank, matched for age, sex, intelligence, and educa

Therapeutic applications and potential mechanisms of acupuncture in migraine: A literature review and perspectives.

Acupuncture is commonly used as a treatment for migraines. Animal studies have suggested that acupuncture can decrease neuropeptides, immune cells, and proinflammatory and excitatory neurotransmitters, which are associated with the pathogenesis of neuroinflammation. In addition, acupuncture participates in the development of peripheral and central sensitization through modulation of the release of neuronal-sensitization-related mediators (brain-derived neurotrophic factor, glutamate), endocannabinoid system, and serotonin system activation. Clinical studies have demonstrated that acupuncture m

Automatic autism spectrum disorder detection using artificial intelligence methods with MRI neuroimaging: A review.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a brain condition characterized by diverse signs and symptoms that appear in early childhood. ASD is also associated with communication deficits and repetitive behavior in affected individuals. Various ASD detection methods have been developed, including neuroimaging modalities and psychological tests. Among these methods, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) imaging modalities are of paramount importance to physicians. Clinicians rely on MRI modalities to diagnose ASD accurately. The MRI modalities are non-invasive methods that include functional (fMRI) and struc

Pathogenic variants in NUBPL result in failure to assemble the matrix arm of complex I and cause a complex leukoencephalopathy with thalamic involvement.

Disorders of the white matter are genetically very heterogeneous including several genes involved in mitochondrial bioenergetics. Diagnosis of the underlying cause is aided by pattern recognition on neuroimaging and by next-generation sequencing. Recently, genetic changes in the complex I assembly factor NUBPL have been characterized by a consistent recognizable pattern of leukoencephalopathy affecting deep white matter including the corpus callosum and cerebellum. Here, we report twin boys with biallelic variants in NUBPL, an unreported c.351 G > A; p.(Met117Ile) and a previously reported pat
