Gut microbiota influences major depressive disorder (MDD) via the microbiota-gut-brain axis through various metabolites, but a systematic understanding of their neuroregulatory mechanisms is lacking. This review categorizes gut microbial metabolites according to their metabolic origin and physiological function, clarifies their roles in depression-related neurobiological processes, and explores their therapeutic potential. Following PRISMA-ScR guidelines, a scoping review screened 1,249 records from five databases (2020-2025), including 23 studies on tryptophan metabolism, short-chain fatty ac

Information about motion is encoded by direction-selective retinal ganglion cells (DSGCs). These cells reliably transmit this information across a broad range of light levels, spanning moonlight to sunlight. Previous work indicates that adaptation to low light levels causes heterogeneous changes to the direction tuning of ON-OFF (oo)DSGCs and suggests that superior-preferring ON-OFF DSGCs (s-DSGCs) are biased toward detecting stimuli rather than precisely signaling direction. Using a large-scale multielectrode array, we measured the absolute sensitivity of ooDSGCs and found that s-DSGCs are 10

BACKGROUND: Based on the theory of interhemispheric inhibition and the bimodal balance-recovery model in stroke, we explored the effects of excitation/inhibition (E/I) of parvalbumin (PV) neurons in the contralateral primary motor cortex (cM1) connecting the ipsilateral M1 (iM1) via the corpus callosum (cM1-CC-iM1) of ischemic stroke rats by optogenetic stimulation.
METHODS: We tested this by injecting anterograde and retrograde virus in rats with middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO), and evaluated the neurological scores, motor behavior, volume of cerebral infarction and the E/I balance o

OBJECTIVE: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1)1 is known to cause learning deficits in affected individuals. There has been evidence linking altered gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)2 mediated inhibition to learning impairments in rodent models and humans with NF1. Still, evidence on the role of GABA in learning deficits associated with NF1 is inconclusive.
METHODS: We examined procedural learning and motor cortex excitability through intracortical facilitation and short interval intracortical inhibition and its activity dependent modulation while performing a procedural sequence learning task in 16

Ziziphi Spinosae Semen (ZSS) has been used for treatment of insomnia in China for centuries. To reveal the influence of insomnia on the levels of the neurotransmitters including serotonin (5-HT), glutamic acid (Glu), γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), noradrenaline (NE) and dopamine (DA), and to study the role of ZSS aqueous extract in the treatment of insomnia, an UPLC-ESI- MS/MS method was developed and validated for simultaneous determination of five neurotransmitters in the rat brain. The brain samples were pretreated by one-step direct protein precipitation with acetonitrile. The analytes were d

Encoding and predicting aversive events are critical functions of circuits that support survival and emotional well-being. Maladaptive circuit changes in emotional valence processing can underlie the pathophysiology of affective disorders. The lateral habenula (LHb) has been linked to aversion and mood regulation through modulation of the dopamine and serotonin systems. We have defined the identity and function of glutamatergic (Vglut2) control of the LHb, comparing the role of inputs originating in the globus pallidus internal segment (GPi), and lateral hypothalamic area (LHA), respectively.

Transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS) is a non-invasive and safe technique that transiently enhances brain GABA and noradrenaline levels. Although tVNS has been used mainly to treat clinical disorders such as epilepsy, recent studies indicate it is also an effective tool to investigate and potentially enhance the neuromodulation of action control. Given the key roles of GABA and noradrenaline in neural plasticity and cortical excitability, we investigated whether tVNS, through a presumed increase in level of these neurotransmitters, modulates sequential behavior in terms of response se

In the present study, we investigated the possible participation of the endocannabinoid system in the basolateral amygdala and N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) or GABA-A receptor neurotransmission in the ventral tegmental area in the memory consolidation impairment induced by morphine administration. To measure memory formation, step-through type passive avoidance apparatus was used with adult male Wistar rats. The results showed that intraperitoneal (i.p.) administration of morphine (3 and 6mg/kg) after the successful training phase had an amnestic effect and induced memory consolidation impairmen

Neurons within the vagal motoneuron region of the lamprey have been shown to modulate respiratory activity via ascending excitatory projections to the paratrigeminal respiratory group (pTRG), the proposed respiratory rhythm generator. The present study was performed on in vitro brainstem preparations of the lamprey to provide a characterization of ascending projections within the whole respiratory motoneuron column with regard to the distribution of neurons projecting to the pTRG and related neurochemical markers. Injections of Neurobiotin were performed into the pTRG and the presence of gluta

Currently available therapies for essential tremor (ET) provide sufficient control only for less than a half of patients and many unmet needs exist. This is in part due to the empiric nature of existing treatment options and persisting uncertainties about the pathogenesis of ET. The emerging concept of ET as a possible neurodegenerative disorder, better understanding of associated biochemical changes, including alterations in the γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-ergic system and gap junctions, and the identification of the role of the leucine-rich repeat and immunoglobulin-like domain-containing 1 (

CHF5074, a new microglial modulator, attenuates memory deficit in Alzheimer's disease transgenic mice. In this study, the effect of an acute or subacute CHF5074 treatment on in vivo novel object recognition test and on [³H]Acetylcholine (ACh) and GABA release in pre-plaque (7-month-old) Tg2576 mice have been compared with those induced by the γ-secretase inhibitor LY450139 (semagacestat). Vehicle-treated Tg2576 mice displayed an impairment of recognition memory compared with wild-type animals. This impairment was recovered in transgenic animals acutely treated with CHF5074 (30 mg/kg), while LY

The medial hypothalamus is part of a neurobiological substrate controlling defensive behavior. It has been shown that a hypothalamic nucleus, the dorsomedial hypothalamus (DMH), is involved in the regulation of escape, a defensive behavior related to panic attacks. The role played by the DMH in the organization of conditioned fear responses, however, is less clear. In the present study, we investigated the effects of reversible inactivation of the DMH with the GABA A agonist muscimol on inhibitory avoidance acquisition and escape expression by male Wistar rats (approximately 280 g in weight) t

Tonic immobility (TI) is a temporary state of profound motor inhibition induced by situations that supposedly generate intense fear, with the objective to protect the animal from attacks by predators. A previous study by our group demonstrated that cholinergic stimulation of the central, basolateral, and lateral posterior nuclei of the amygdala decreases the duration of TI in guinea pigs. In the current study, we attempted to investigate the effects of cholinergic, opioidergic, and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)ergic stimulation of the central amygdala (CEA) on TI modulation. We observed that

Postnatal development of hippocampal dentate granule cell gamma-aminobutyric acidA (GABAA) receptor pharmacological properties was studied. Granule cells were acutely isolated from hippocampi of 7- to 14- and 45- to 52-day-old rats, and whole cell patch-clamp recordings were obtained. The sensitivity of GABAA receptors to GABA and modulation of GABAA receptor currents by benzodiazepines (BZ), zinc, furosemide, and loreclezole was studied. Multiple changes in the pharmacological properties of dentate granule-cell GABAA receptors occurred during the first 52 days of postnatal development: GABA-e

Autonomic dysreflexia (AD) is a clinical phenomenon that affects patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) above the major sympathetic outflow tract. The lesion is most often at or above the T-6 level. Any noxious stimuli below this level initiate reflex sympathetic activity resulting in life threatening hypertension uncontrollable by the feedback parasympathetic activity. The episodes of hypertension generally persist until the offending stimulus is removed. Absence of higher control over reflex sympathetic activity due to transection of the cord is an anatomical explanation of the phenomenon. C

gamma-Aminobutyric acid, a neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, has been shown to be present in and synthesized and secreted by rodent and feline myenteric plexus neurons. The aims of the present studies were to measure gamma-aminobutyric acid concentrations and synthesis and to establish cellular localization and uptake of gamma-aminobutyric acid by immunocytochemistry and autoradiography, respectively, within mucosal and submucosal tissues of the rat antrum. Direct demonstration of [3H]gamma-aminobutyric acid release and the effects of exogenous gamma-aminobutyric acid and muscimo

Recently we demonstrated that [3H]dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate binds specifically to two populations of sites in rat brain membranes [Majewska et al. (1990) Eur. J. Pharmac. 189, 307-315]. As an extension of this work, we studied the biochemical and pharmacological properties of [3H]dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate binding to brain membranes and the effects of dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate on GABA-induced currents in cultured neurons. [3H]Dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate binding depended upon incubation time, pH, protein concentration, and incubation temperature. Thermal denaturation or pretrea

Central neurotransmitter systems have been activated in anaesthetized rats, while the effects on the urinary bladder have been recorded by cystometric procedures. Stimulation of central catecholamine neurons with the amine precursor L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA), after peripheral inhibition of the degradating enzyme dopadecarboxylase, resulted in a hyperactive urinary bladder response. This bladder action seems to be elicited mainly via central dopamine receptors, and mediated via neurons of non-catecholamine type. Activation of central muscarinic receptors with oxotremorine, after pre

Mast cells (MCs) are important intermediates between the nervous and immune systems. The cardiac autonomic nervous system (CANS) crucially modulates cardiac electrophysiology and arrhythmogenesis, but whether and how MC-CANS neuroimmune interaction influences arrhythmia remain unclear. Our clinical data showed a close relationship between serum levels of MC markers and CANS activity, and then we use mast cell stabilizers (MCSs) to alter this MC-CANS communication. MCSs, which are well-known anti-allergic agents, could reduce the risk of ventricular arrhythmia (VA) after myocardial infarction (
