We report our experience in treating growth delay in boys with isolated growth hormone deficiency (IGHD) receiving biosynthetic human growth hormone. The study was performed in 15 boys with IGHD receiving GH. At the chronological age of 13.1 (1.1) years (SD), 13 were prepubertal, two were in early puberty and there was a mean bone age delay of 2.5 (1.4) years. A growth spurt was induced by either depot testosterone or oxandrolone. There was an increase in growth rate from 5.7 (1.6) cm/year, occurring the year before anabolic or sex steroid therapy, to 8.1 (1.2) cm/year during treatment (p < 0.

This experimental study reports the results of implantation of cartilaginous and periosteal tissues into growth plate defects in the tibiae of sheep. When no material was used, the defect rapidly filled with marrow-like tissue. When cartilage from the margin of the secondary centre of ossification was implanted, endochondral ossification continued and no shortening or deformity resulted. Implantation of periosteum with or without reconstructed peripheral tissues resulted in the formation of a bony bridge which led to a 32% inhibition of longitudinal growth and a 12 degrees varus deformity in t

UNLABELLED: This short review on GRF is divided into two parts: laboratory findings: Current status of the knowledge on the primary structure of all the GRFs isolated from mammalian sources; structure activity relationships as obtained with synthetic fragments and analogs of GRF; the mechanisms of action of GRF in vitro and in vivo; the localization by techniques of hypothalamic GRF neurons.
CLINICAL STUDIES: A summary of past and current clinical studies with hGRF or fragments of hGRF establishing the dose range/effect in normal young adults; pharmacokinetics of hGRF; intravenous, sub-cutane

Twenty-two hypopituitary boys treated with human GH were studied longitudinally before and during puberty. Eight patients entered spontaneous puberty at a mean bone age of 12.4 +/- 1.0 (+/- SD) yr. Height velocity reached a mean peak of 6.8 cm/yr during the second year of spontaneous puberty. In these patients, the mean total height gain throughout puberty was 22.8 +/- 5.2 cm, and the mean final height was 158.6 +/- 7.2 cm. Fourteen patients received testosterone enanthate (100 mg/month, im) starting at a mean bone age of 13.6 +/- 1.1 yr. Height velocity was maximal (7.5 cm/yr) during the firs

The spontaneous release of growth hormone (GH) during nocturnal sleep was studied at age 5-19 years in 44 male and 15 female patients with severe growth retardation (-2.1 to -6.5 SD) among whom 43 were prepubertal and 16 pubertal. Comparison with the results of classical stimulation tests with ornithine, arginine and/or insulin showed good agreement in cases of classical hypopituitarism (n = 14) as in patients who seemed to be endocrinologically normal (n = 27). In 18 patients (31%) there was a discrepancy between sleep release and responses of GH to stimulation test: treatment with hGH was av

Specificity of histological lesions is key to differentiating broiler stunting syndromes.Differences are seen in the peak age of occurrence of different stunting diseases.Virus co-infection may play a role in stunting and may cause mixed stunted cases.

Short stature is defined as height that is more than 2 standard deviations below the mean height for age; tall stature is defined as height that is more than 2 standard deviations above the mean height for age. The initial evaluation of short and tall stature should include obtaining a comprehensive history, performing a physical examination, plotting serial height measurements on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or World Health Organization growth charts, calculating estimated adult height and comparing it with midparental height, determining bone age, and laboratory testing in

Growth retardation for more than 2 SD below the average population or presumed familial target height is classified as a short stature and may be a clinical manifestation of a large number of disorders. The use of the latest methods of molecular genetic analysis in recent years has allowed for a better understanding of the pathogenesis of inherited forms of a short stature. One of the recently discovered mechanisms of this pathology was monoallelic mutations in RPL13 gene, leading to the development of Isidor-Toutain type spondyloepimetaphyseal dysplasia (SEDM). Characteristic phenotypic featu

Despite the widespread use of triptans in the treatment of migraine during pregnancy, questions relating to their vasoconstrictive properties have been raised following recent reports of rare fetal deaths and intrauterine growth restrictions. However, to date, analysis of these data does not allow to conclude to a direct effect of triptans, which remain a second line treatment of migraine attacks during pregnancy at any term and under normal conditions of use.

PURPOSE: The distinction between congenital hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (CHH) and constitutional delay of growth and puberty (CDGP) in patients with delayed puberty is difficult to distinguish, but important for timely treatment. The aim of this study is to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the diagnostic performance of serum inhibin B (INHB) levels for differentiating CHH and CDGP.
METHODS: PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library databases were systematically searched from the date of database inception to November 10, 2019 for studies examining the use of serum INHB

OBJECTIVE: To review the pathophysiology and evaluation methods of linear growth and bone mineral density in children and adolescents diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease.
SOURCE OF DATA: Narrative review carried out in the PubMed and Scopus databases through an active search of the terms: inflammatory bowel disease, growth, failure to thrive, bone health, bone mineral density, and children and adolescents, related to the last ten years, searching in the title, abstract, or keyword fields.
SYNTHESIS OF FINDINGS: Inflammatory bowel diseases of childhood onset may present as part of the c

Adult height and growth patterns are largely genetically programmed. Studies in twins have indicated that the heritability of height is high (>80%), suggesting that genetic variation is the main determinant of stature. Height exhibits a normal (Gaussian) distribution according to sex, age, and ancestry. Short stature is usually defined as a height which is 2 standard deviations (S.D.) less than the mean height of a specific population. This definition includes 2.3% of the population and usually includes healthy individuals. In this group of short stature non-syndromic conditions, the genetic i

BACKGROUND: Stunting affects one-third of children under 5 y old in developing countries, and 14% of childhood deaths are attributable to it. A large number of risk factors for stunting have been identified in epidemiological studies. However, the relative contribution of these risk factors to stunting has not been examined across countries. We estimated the number of stunting cases among children aged 24-35 mo (i.e., at the end of the 1,000 days' period of vulnerability) that are attributable to 18 risk factors in 137 developing countries.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: We classified risk factors int
