The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical effect of AO miniplate screw internal fixation and Kirschner wire (KW) in the treatment of metacarpal fractures. We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of 590 metacarpal fracture patients admitted to our hospital from March 2016 to March 2019. Among them, 290 patients were treated with KWs; 300 were treated with AO microplate internal fixation. The clinical, radiological results, time of surgery, and complications were observed and compared between the 2 groups. The imaging characteristics and preoperative fracture types of the 2 group

Infected fractures of the hand and wrist are uncommon, occurring most often after open crushing injury in a contaminated environment. Fundamental principles of treatment include thorough debridement of necrotic material, appropriate antibiotic selection, and adequate stabilization of bone. Delayed reconstruction of bone and soft tissue is at times aided by the use of free tissue transfer.

As a universal human tool the hand often suffers injuries of its soft tissue. Different localization of defects (palmar and dorsal) and different injuries of functional structures (tendon, nerve, vessel, bone) also need different soft tissue cover and wound closure. The possibilities in plastic surgery of the hand include free transplantation of skin, local and distant flaps, free flaps and neurovascular flaps.

Calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR), whose expressions in the parathyroid and kidney are important for the homeostasis of extracellular calcium ion, is also expressed in chondrocytes and osteoblasts, in which the receptor suppression is linked to impaired mineralization. Unexpected observation of rickets in CaSR knockout mice amid a plenty of calcium ion under hyperparathyroidism seemed compatible with the above findings. On the other hand, constitutive activity of osteoblast CaSR enhances bone turnover and promotes loss of cancellous bone. These findings suggest that CaSR activation in chondrocyt

The intercellular communication between osteoblasts and osteoclasts is crucial to bone homeostasis. Since Rodan and Martin proposed the control of osteoclasts by osteoblasts in the 1980s, many factors have been isolated from osteoblasts and shown to regulate the differentiation and function of osteoclasts. However, the mechanism by which osteoblasts regulate osteoclasts during bone remodelling is still unclear. On the other hand, it is well accepted that many metabolic bone diseases are associated with the disruption of the communication between osteoblast and osteoclasts. Thus, this review fo

Hand osteoarthritis (HOA) is a heterogeneous joint disease with high radiographic and symptomatic prevalence. The diagnosis of HOA is based on clinical and radiographic features. The identification of potential biomarkers for diagnosis, prognosis, disease severity assessment, and therapeutic efficacy evaluation of НОА remains an active area of research. To summarize the eligible biomarker data, a comprehensive narrative review was performed using the PubMed and Scopus databases covering publications from inception to December 2024. Our search uncovered five distinct groups of biomarkers associ

Brachymetacarpia is the term for the shortening of the digit as a result of the metacarpal shortening. Isolated idiopathic brachymetacarpia is rarely reported in African countries, and its incidence is still unknown in the literature compared to brachymetatarsia, which is extensively reported. We report an uncommon case of a 26-year-old male patient who presented with short, symmetrical ring fingers without an associated medical condition. Clinical examination revealed signs in keeping with brachymetacarpia, while plain radiographs showed a metacarpal sign. Non-operative treatment was given fo

We designed a new method using hemi-longitudinal second metacarpal bone to reconstruct grade-3 hypoplastic thumbs. Seven patients were treated in two stages. In the first stage, the second metacarpal was split longitudinally and transferred to reconstruct the first metacarpal. In the second stage, opponensplasty was performed by transferring the FDS tendon. Bone union was achieved in all cases. All patients could oppose to their middle finger at least. They managed to do daily activities such as writing, eating, using smartphones and so on. This is a useful procedure to preserve a 5-digit hand

BACKGROUND: Patients with hand trauma are usually examined in emergency departments of hospitals. Hand fractures are frequently observed in patients with hand trauma. Here, we aim to develop a computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) method to assist physicians in the diagnosis of hand fractures using deep learning methods.
METHODS: In this study, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) were used and the transfer learning method was applied. There were 275 fractured wrists, 257 fractured phalanx, and 270 normal hand radiographs in the raw dataset. CNN, a deep learning method, were used in this study. In or

A short thumb with radial angulation causes loss of hand function in patients with Apert syndrome. Although past reports have described various procedures for the correction of the thumb, there has been no consensus on the best procedure. This study aimed to assess the clinical and radiographic results of a surgical technique for the correction of a thumb radial angulation deformity: open-wedge osteotomy using a bone-graft substitute. Ten patients (18 thumbs) who underwent open-wedge osteotomy on the proximal phalange using a bone-graft substitute were evaluated retrospectively. The open-wedge

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical efficacy of cervical anterior internal fixation and bone grafting fusion by comparative analyzing hand dysfunction in Hirayama disease patients using Jebsen-Taylor Test (JTT).
METHODS: From Feb 2010 to Jan 2014, 20 hirayama disease patients who underwent surgery were enrolled in Department of Orthopaedics, Peking University Third Hospital. JTT were evaluated for the 20 patients before and after surgery. Among them, 9 patients were evaluated before and at three months, one year and more than 2 years after surgery.
RESULTS: All sections of the JTT scale i

In a 51-year-old woman with a history of fractures and dislocations after low intensity trauma in childhood, intensive blue sclera, short stature, and hearing loss, the diagnosis of osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) was suspected. She was referred to our clinic with hand deformities and left knee pain and stiffness. She had difficulty in walking and reported a history of immobilization for 6 months because of knee pain. She had bilateral flexion contracture of the elbows which occurred following dislocations of the elbows in childhood. She had Z deformity of the first phalanges, reducible swan-neck
