Health beliefs and promotion of HIV-preventive intentions among teenagers: a Scottish perspective.

Beliefs concerning the spread of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and preventive behaviors were examined in a sample of 351 sexually active Scottish teenagers. A postal questionnaire, including measures of variables specified by the health belief model (HBM) and preventive intentions, was employed. The relation between HBM measures and reported endorsement of HIV-preventive intentions was investigated. Results indicated that, in general, respondents intended to use condoms with new sexual partners. The majority also intended to carry condoms if they thought they might have sex with a new

Knowledge, Attitude, and Practices Toward Tuberculosis Among Hospital Outpatients in Kabul, Afghanistan.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) is a high-burden respiratory infectious disease. There was a sharp decline in the number of confirmed TB cases during the pandemic; this is likely to be influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic response, with under-reporting due to resource diversion. There are typically 13,000 tuberculosis-associated deaths in Afghanistan annually, with significant problems posed by drug-resistant TB. METHOD: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted in Afghanistan on Kabul residents who visited the adult outpatient departments of public hospitals for any health-related reaso

Men's perceptions of and participation in family planning in Aqaba and Ma'an governorates, Jordan.

Men's participation in family planning has become a cornerstone in women's reproductive health. The aim of this study was to examine knowledge, attitudes and practice towards family planning of Jordanian men in southern Jordan. In a cross-sectional descriptive study in 2012, structured interviews were made with 104 married men in Aqaba and Ma'an governorates. Although 93.5% of the men had heard about family planning-most commonly the intrauterine device (IUD) and oral contraceptives-only 45.1% reported that they and their wife currently used it. Most men agreed about a minimum 2 years' child s

Factors related to benevolent and hostile ageism among paramedical students.

Caring for older adults is often seen as less prestigious, less attractive, and even boring and frustrating by health care students. A cross-sectional study of 265 paramedical students examined their fear of death, anxiety about aging, knowledge of aging and gerontological care, perceptions of older adults, and how these factors relate to ageist attitudes and perceptions of working with older adults using path analysis. The study found that anxiety about aging, negative perceptions of older adults, and limited knowledge of aging and gerontological care were directly linked to hostile ageist at

Bridging the health literacy gap in cardiac rehabilitation through intervention and program design.

This Letter to the Editor responds to the recent study by Kanejima et al. on the association between health literacy (HL) and behavioral changes during phase I cardiac rehabilitation (CR). While acknowledging the study's valuable contribution, we contest the conclusion that low HL is an inherent barrier to behavioral change. Drawing on recent evidence, we highlight that HL is a modifiable factor that can be improved through targeted interventions, program designs, and the rehabilitation process itself. We present six key arguments: (1) digital health technologies and structured education can e

Knowledge, attitude, and practices regarding psychological wellbeing among people living with HIV: A cross-sectional study at an antiretroviral therapy plus center in India.

Mental health is an under-recognized aspect of HIV care. The psychological wellbeing among people living with HIV (PLHIV) is often neglected in routine antiretroviral therapy (ART) services, especially in resource-limited settings. The study assessed the knowledge, attitude, and practices (KAP) related to psychological wellbeing among PLHIV attending an ART Plus Centre in India and identified service delivery gaps. This cross-sectional study included 301 adult PLHIV attending an ART Plus Centre. A prevalidated, structured questionnaire was administered via in-person interviews. Data were analy

Practitioner-related factors that may influence knowledge and confidence of TDI management in children; a scoping review.

PURPOSE: Traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) are the fifth most common chronic disease/injury globally, with 90% of TDIs occurring before the age of 20 years. Initial management of TDIs can influence their prognosis, yet the literature reports a low to moderate knowledge level among practitioners and a reluctance to manage TDIs. The aim of this study was to examine the factors related to general practitioner knowledge and confidence in management of TDIs in children. METHODS: A search strategy was conducted on Pubmed and Embase, with searches limited to English language. Five concepts were addre

Gender and Contraception in Kenya: a Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Access to the full range of contraceptive methods is a core component of sexual and reproductive health. While Kenya had one of the highest rates of contraceptive use compared to other countries on the African continent, studies since 2015 have shown prevalence of use has fallen; contraceptive usage rates are estimated at 38.7%, significantly lower than Kenya's target of 62% and in a context of high rates of unsafe abortions and high maternal mortality. This scoping review investigates the role of gender norms in determining patterns of contraceptive usage among women of childbeari

Bridging the awareness-action gap in pelvic floor prehabilitation: cognitive barriers and facilitators for asymptomatic populations-a perspective.

Pelvic floor disorders (PFDs), including urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse, represent a widespread public health concern with substantial implications for functional status and quality of life. Evidence supports the efficacy of prehabilitation-a proactive strategy focused on preventing dysfunction before clinical onset-through screening and early intervention. However, its implementation in asymptomatic populations remains limited, largely due to a pervasive "awareness-action gap" wherein knowledge fails to translate into behavioral engagement. This perspective article systematica
