Religiousness, sexual orientation, and depression among emerging adults in U.S. higher education: Findings from the Healthy Minds Study.

Religiousness has long been found beneficial for mental health, although its protective effects may be attenuated for sexual minorities. We sought to examine the associations between religiousness and depression and whether these associations were moderated by religious affiliation and/or sexual orientation. We analyzed the dataset (N = 103,161 undergraduate and graduate students) from the Healthy Minds Study (2020-2021), which was an online survey administered at 140 higher education institutions across the United States. We used multivariable logistic regression to examine the associations b

Housing Instability, E-Cigarette, and Tobacco Use by Sexual Identity in US High Schoolers.

INTRODUCTION: The relationship between housing instability and e-cigarette and traditional tobacco use, particularly for sexual minority students, has received little attention. This study investigates the association between housing instability, e-cigarettes, and traditional tobacco use in sexual minorities and heterosexual adolescents. METHODS: We used 2021 and 2023 Youth Risk Behavior Survey data (n = 23 834). Multivariable logistic regression analyses examined associations of housing instability, sexual identity, and e-cigarette and traditional tobacco use. Using various combinations of s

Higher Prescription Tranquilizer Misuse Among Bisexual Individuals in the United States, 2021-2023.

BACKGROUND: Prescription tranquilizer misuse poses negative health outcomes including respiratory distress and overdose. Given the higher prevalence of substance use by sexual minority individuals, assessing the prevalence and motives of prescription tranquilizer misuse in this group is a priority. This study examined prescription tranquilizer misuse by sexual identity using a US nationally representative dataset. METHODS: We used the adult sample from the 2021-2023 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) (N = 139,524). The outcome was past-month prescription tranquilizer misuse, inclu

Differences in Tobacco Advertising Receptivity Among Young Adults by Sexual Identity and Sex: Findings From the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study.

Tobacco use is disproportionately high among sexual minorities (i.e., lesbian/gay and bisexual [LGB] individuals). Receptivity to tobacco advertising is an established risk factor for tobacco use among the general population, yet little research has assessed how receptivity to tobacco advertising differs based on sexual identity and sex. Additionally, studies often fail to distinguish between LGB identities, creating a monolith of sexual identity that ignores different underlying risk factors and behaviors. This study examined differences in receptivity to advertising of five tobacco product c

Lifetime non-fatal overdose experiences among at-risk adolescents and young adults in the emergency department with past-year opioid use in the USA.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents and young adults with risk factors for opioid misuse and opioid use disorder are at elevated risk for overdose. We examined prior non-fatal overdose experiences among at-risk adolescents/young adults to inform prevention efforts. METHODS: Adolescents/young adults (ages 16-30) in two US emergency departments self-reporting past year opioid misuse or opioid use plus a misuse risk factor completed a baseline survey as part of an ongoing randomised controlled trial. We describe baseline factors associated with (a) overall non-fatal overdose experiences and (b) groups based

Sexual orientation and sexual functioning in midlife women veterans.

OBJECTIVE: Midlife women experience menopause- and aging-related health changes that may impact sexual functioning. Research has historically relied on heteronormative constructs of sexuality, and little is known about the experiences of sexual minority women (SMW) during menopause. We therefore examined whether indices of sexual function differed between SMW and heterosexual midlife women Veterans. METHODS: Data were drawn from a cross-sectional survey designed to examine midlife women Veterans' experiences of menopause and aging. Participants self-reported sexual orientation, sociodemograph

Disparities in alcohol- and substance-related hospitalizations and deaths across sexual orientations in Canada: a longitudinal study.

OBJECTIVES: We aim to quantify disparities in substance-related acute events (i.e. hospitalizations and deaths for substances, including alcohol, cannabis, opioids, narcotics, and/or illicit drugs) across sexual orientations based on health administrative data. STUDY DESIGN: This was a longitudinal analysis from six waves of the Canadian Community Health Survey (2009-2014) linked to hospitalization/mortality data in Ontario, Canada. METHODS: The study sample consisted of survey respondents aged ≥15 (weighted n = 15,406,000) who provided a valid response to the question about sexual orientati

Perceived Stress Levels among Ukrainian Migrant and LGBT+ Minorities in Poland during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, immigrant status and being a member of the LGBT+ community are all independent factors associated with increased stress levels. Few studies provide more complex analysis on this issue, and there has been no research on the cumulative burden of perceived stress that people belonging to both minorities experience in the current epidemiological situation. The aim of this study was to assess the ability to deal with an external situation during the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Poland in the following groups with different stress levels (t

Sexual orientation differences in childhood sexual abuse, suicide attempts, and DSM-5 alcohol, tobacco, other drug use, and mental health disorders in the US.

BACKGROUND: Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) contributes to increased risk of substance use and mental health disorders in the general population. OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence and associations of CSA and suicide attempts, substance use, and mental health disorders as a function of sex (female, male) and sexual orientation (lesbian, gay, bisexual, heterosexual-identified with same-sex attraction and/or behavior, heterosexual-identified without same-sex attraction and/or behavior, and unsure). PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Data were collected using structured diagnostic face-to-face interviews

Disparities in Childhood Abuse Between Transgender and Cisgender Adolescents.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Transgender adolescents (TGAs) exhibit disproportionate levels of mental health problems compared with cisgender adolescents (CGAs), but psychosocial processes underlying mental health disparities among TGAs remain understudied. We examined self-reported childhood abuse among TGAs compared with CGAs and risk for abuse within subgroups of TGAs in a nationwide sample of US adolescents. METHODS: Adolescents aged 14 to 18 completed a cross-sectional online survey (n = 1836, including 1055 TGAs, 340 heterosexual CGAs, and 433 sexual minority CGAs). Participants reported

Optimizing Screening for Anorectal, Pharyngeal, and Urogenital Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae Infections in At-Risk Adolescents and Young Adults in New Orleans, Louisiana and Los Angeles, California, United States.

BACKGROUND: Public health organizations have inconsistent recommendations for screening adolescents and young adults for Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae infections. Guidelines suggest different combinations of anorectal, pharyngeal, and urogenital testing based on age, sex, and sexual activity. Further evaluation of how identity and behaviors impact the anatomic distribution of C. trachomatis and N. gonorrhoeae infection is needed to optimize future screening practices. METHODS: We assessed the positivity of C. trachomatis and N. gonorrhoeae infections at different anatomic si

Epidemiology, molecular strain types, and macrolide resistance of Treponema pallidum in Japan, 2017-2018.

BACKGROUND: Japan has seen a substantial increase in syphilis cases since 2013 and Tokyo and Osaka prefectures accounted for about 40% of all cases in Japan. Therefore, focusing on these 2 prefectures, we assessed syphilis cases detected during 2017-2018, combining epidemiological information with molecular typing data. METHODS: Using data from surveillance reports, we described syphilis cases by gender, age, transmission route, and stage of syphilis. Clinical specimens were collected from syphilis patients in Tokyo and Osaka prefectures. Molecular typing was performed by analyzing Treponema

Severity of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Drug Use Disorders Among Sexual Minority Individuals and Their "Not Sure" Counterparts.

PURPOSE: Sexual minority individuals have heightened risk for substance use; however, previous studies have not assessed severity of alcohol use disorders (AUDs), tobacco use disorders (TUDs), and drug use disorders (DUDs) among lesbian/gay and bisexual individuals and those "not sure" of their sexual identity compared with heterosexual individuals. This study examined how three dimensions of sexual orientation (identity, attraction, and behavior) relate to severity of AUD, TUD, and DUD. METHODS: This study used cross-sectional national data (N = 36,309) from the National Epidemiologic Survey

Sexual minority disparities in opioid misuse, perceived heroin risk and heroin access among a national sample of US adults.

BACKGROUND: Lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) adults have elevated use of many substances compared to heterosexual adults, yet LGB disparities in specific types of opioid misuse and perceived opioid risk have not been fully characterized. METHODS: Data on 126,463 adults (including 8241 LGB adults) were from the 2015-2017 National Survey of Drug Use and Health. Logistic regression was used to estimate lesbian/gay (L/G) and bisexual disparities (relative to same-gender heterosexuals) for: lifetime prescription pain reliever misuse, heroin use and injection heroin use; past-year opioid misuse and

Brief Report: Per Sex-Act Risk of HIV Transmission Under Antiretroviral Treatment: A Data-Driven Approach.

BACKGROUND: Before the completion of HPTN 052, PARTNER, and Opposites Attract studies, data were lacking to directly estimate HIV transmission risk under effective combined antiretroviral treatment (cART). Rather, estimates were obtained by extrapolating a dose-response relationship between viral load and risk of HIV transmission, observed among untreated individuals, to treated individuals. Presently, data have accumulated from 9 clinical studies for a direct validation of this extrapolation. METHODS: Using estimates of per sex-act risk of HIV transmission on effective cART obtained by extra

Chronic Physiologic Effects of Stress Among Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Adults: Results From the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

OBJECTIVE: Social disadvantage is associated with markers of physiological dysregulation, which is linked to disease trajectories. Chronic experiences with discrimination are thought to result in the accumulation of physiological "wear and tear" known as allostatic load (AL) among socially marginalized populations such as sexual minorities. Using a nationally representative US sample, we examined whether (1) people who self-identified as homosexual or bisexual display higher levels of AL than heterosexual individuals and (2) subgroups of sexual identity would further differ from each other as

Seroprevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) type 6 and 16 vary by anatomic site of HPV infection in men.

BACKGROUND: It is largely unknown if antihuman papillomavirus (HPV) serum antibody responses vary by anatomic site of infection in men. METHODS: This study assessed type-specific anti-HPV serum antibody prevalence associated with corresponding HPV DNA detection in the external genitalia and the anal canal of 1,587 heterosexual men and 199 men who have sex with men (MSM). RESULTS: We observed that HPV 6 and 16 seroprevalence was higher in the presence of same HPV-type infection in the anal canal compared with same HPV-type infection in the external genitalia only, and among MSM compared with
