The lesbian community and FTMs: détente in the butch/FTM borderlands.

In 1998, Dr. Jacob Hale wrote about a 'borderland' between butch lesbian identity and FTM masculinity, suggesting a 'demilitarized zone.' While the intervening years have brought no 'demilitarized zone,' the border may not have a long future. Converging trends in identity among the younger generation in their teens and twenties suggest this, such as changing meanings of 'lesbian' and 'FTM,' the blending of sexuality and gender, and understanding these as personal, rather than identity, differences. The socio-historical circumstances that gave power to anti-trans feminist attitudes and trans re

Barriers to infectious disease care among lesbians.

Despite the considerable number of women in the United States who identify as lesbian, few data exist that address lesbians' health needs. The Institute of Medicine emphasized that data on sexually transmitted infections, Pap smear screening, and cervical dysplasia among lesbians were needed to guide clinical practice, policy development, and patient education. Use of surveillance data for this purpose is limited because risk classifications exclude same-gender sex among women or subsume it under behavior considered as higher risk. However, sexual transmission of human papillomavirus, HIV, Tre

Review: parent-child relationships and child development in donor insemination families.

The present article reviews the empirical research regarding the parent-child relationships and the development of children in donor insemination (DI) families. Over the years, follow-up studies have appeared sporadically and, despite the varying quality of the research methods, preliminary findings have emerged. Heterosexual DI parents were psychologically well adjusted and had stable marital relationships. DI parents showed a similar or higher quality of parent-child interaction and a greater emotional involvement with their children compared with naturally conceived families. The majority o

The National Lesbian Family Study: 2. Interviews with mothers of toddlers.

In this second report from a longitudinal study of lesbian families in which the children were conceived by donor insemination, interviews yielded the following data: Most couples shared parenting co-equally; the majority felt closer to their family of origin; adoptive co-mothers felt greater legitimacy as parents; biology and nurture received the same ratings for mother-child bonding; and political and legal action had increased among many participants. The impact of these findings and that of homophobia on lesbian family life are discussed.

Understanding the experiences and needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans Australians living with dementia, and their partners.

AIM: To outline the experiences and needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) Australians living with dementia - and their partners. METHODS: In-depth interviews were conducted with LGBT people, their partners and service providers. RESULTS: LGBT people living with dementia experience unique challenges including the failure of some families of origin and service providers to understand and value their sexual orientation or gender identity. The fear of discrimination by service providers results in greater reliance on intimate partners for care and compounds social isolation. CONCLUSI

A descriptive study of the experiences of lesbian, gay and transgender parents accessing health services for their children.

AIM: To explore the experiences of lesbian, gay and transgender families accessing health care for their children. BACKGROUND: Although lesbian, gay and transgender families are becoming more common, little is known about their health-seeking experiences. These families may be fearful about disclosing their sexual orientation or gender identity to health professionals. As a result, lesbian, gay and transgender parents may not be receiving optimal care for their children. DESIGN: Descriptive qualitative study. METHOD: Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 11 lesbian, ga

Epidemiological and economic effect of preference-driven HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis implementation for men who have sex with men and transgender women across 16 countries and territories in the Asia-Pacific region: a modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) coverage remains low among men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women in the Asia-Pacific region, and discrete choice experiments identified user preferences for PrEP modalities. We aimed to evaluate the epidemiological and economic effects of implementing preference-driven PrEP among MSM and transgender women. METHODS: We used preference data from large-scale discrete choice experiments in 16 Asia-Pacific countries and territories during May and November, 2022, involving MSM at substantial risk (MSMSR), MSM at low risk (MSMLR), and trans

Depression and Suicidal Ideation Among Men who have sex with men and Transgender Women in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Depression and suicidal ideation are common among men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TGW). Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) has become an important component of HIV prevention, but its relationship with mental health remains incompletely understood. This study compared depression and suicidal ideation/risk between PrEP users and non-users among MSM and TGW attending HIV prevention services, and identified factors associated with depression. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 150 MSM and TGW (75 PrEP users and 75 non-users) recruited from two HI

Temporal Trends and Characteristics of Community-Based HIV Testing: First Community-Based Testing Program Results of Men Who Had Sex with Men and Female Sex Workers in Haiti, 2015-2018.

To increase HIV status awareness among men who have sex with men (MSM) and female sex workers (FSWs), a community-based HIV testing program was implemented for the first time in Haiti. We aimed to assess 1) the effectiveness of the program to reach HIV-exposed populations over time and 2) the characteristics, HIV exposure, and testing profile of program participants. Rapid diagnostic HIV testing (RDT) was offered to all individuals present in several community-based settings across Haiti. Trends in the number of tested individuals, first-time tested, and HIV positive tested per intervention we

Factors associated with HIV infection in U.S. blood donors across evolving deferral policies.

BACKGROUND: The implementation of revised blood donor deferral policies may change factors associated with HIV infection in donors. Here, we assessed factors associated with HIV in the U.S. blood donor population between 2015 and 2023. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Using exposure data obtained from interviews of HIV cases and matched controls, we investigated sociodemographic and behavioral factors associated with any HIV infection or recently acquired HIV infection, overall and by strata of deferral policy period (lifetime, 12-month and 3-month), for men who have sex with men and other potential

Epidemiological and clinical characteristics of patients with human monkeypox infection in Zhejiang Province, China, 2023.

BACKGROUND: Monkeypox (Mpox), a zoonotic disease caused by the monkeypox virus (MPXV), is endemic in parts of Central and West Africa. Since 2022, an outbreak of the Mpox infection emerged in several non-endemic countries, posing a potential threat to human health. The first case in Zhejiang Province was confirmed in Hangzhou City on June 15, 2023. The objective of this study is to delineate the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of monkeypox cases in Zhejiang Province in 2023, thereby providing a foundation for prevention and control measures. METHODS: Data on all the confirmed mon

Intention to Use Different Formulations of Longer Acting HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Among Transgender and Gender Expansive Individuals: The Roles of Social Vulnerability and Medical Mistrust.

In 2012, the Federal Drug Administration approved daily oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV prevention in adults. Longer acting injectable PrEP (LA PrEP) has been approved and other formulations are in development. A successful LA PrEP rollout requires examining potential facilitators and barriers to PrEP uptake. Given that transgender and gender expansive (TGE) individuals experience more social vulnerability and higher levels of medical mistrust compared to other populations, examining the role of these two factors in LA PrEP uptake is important. This study, PrEP for ALL, is a commu

Sexual Exposures Associated With Mpox Infection: California, November 2022 to June 2023.

BACKGROUND: Exposures associated with mpox infection remain imperfectly understood. METHODS: We conducted a case-control study enrolling participants who received molecular tests for mpox/orthopoxvirus in California from November 2022 through June 2023. We collected data on behaviors during a 21-day risk period before symptom onset or testing among mpox case patients and test-negative controls. RESULTS: Thirteen of 54 case patients (24.1%) and 5 of 117 controls (4.3%) reported sexual exposure to individuals they identified as potential mpox case patients ("index contacts"; odds ratio [OR], 7

Sexually transmitted infections diagnosed in individuals presenting for forensic and medical care following sexual assault.

BACKGROUND: People who report sexual assault express concerns regarding contracting sexually transmitted infection (STI); however, published literature regarding the risk of STI transmission in this context is sparse. METHOD: We audited STI and blood-borne virus (BBV) testing at a forensic and medical sexual assault care service in the Australian Capital Territory between 2004 and 2022. Eligibility for testing among 1928 presentations was defined based on risk (eg, reported penetration). Testing at presentation included chlamydia and gonorrhoea 1850, syphilis and BBV 1472, and after 2-6 weeks

Factors Associated with Planned Future Use of PrEP in the Next 3 Months and Likelihood to Use PrEP Among Black Cisgender HIV-negative Women in Texas.

Identifying and then addressing barriers and leveraging facilitators is important to help increase pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) use among Black women vulnerable to HIV acquisition. The present cross-sectional study examined what factors were associated with future plans to use PrEP, and general likelihood to use it among a convenience sample of 152 adult, Black cisgender women from three metropolitan areas in Texas. The final multivariable logistic regression model revealed that relationship status (aOR = 0.20, 95% CI: 0.05-0.73, p < 0.05), PrEP anticipated stigma (aOR = 0.29, 95% CI: 0.10-

HIV Pre-exposure Prophylaxis Services for Black and Hispanic or Latino Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men Who Have Sex With Men and Transgender Women in THRIVE, 2015-2020.

BACKGROUND AND SETTING: From 2015 to 2020, the THRIVE project supported 7 US health departments to improve HIV prevention services for Black or African American (Black) and Hispanic or Latino gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBM) and transgender women (TGW). METHODS: We described services provided in the THRIVE PrEP continuum. Using Poisson regression models, we estimated associations between race or ethnicity and age and PrEP screening, linkage, and prescription. We examined associations between colocation of services and PrEP linkage and prescription for 2 sites. RESULTS

Sexual Compulsivity Mediates the Association Between Childhood Sexual Abuse and Condom Use Resistance Among Men Who Have Sex with Men and Women.

Despite the continued prevalence of HIV and condoms' proven effectiveness in HIV prevention, many young men continue to engage in condom use resistance (CUR). Research shows that sexual compulsivity and childhood sexual abuse (CSA) victimization are risk factors for CUR. Given that sexual activity between men is the most common method through which HIV is transmitted, and that men who have sex with men and women (MSMW) are up to five times as likely to contract or transmit HIV as men who have sex with women only (MSWO), understanding the CUR behaviors of MSMW is uniquely important. Both/And: Mixed methods analysis of network composition, communication patterns, and socio-economic support within social networks of transgender women involved in sex work in Lima, Peru.

INTRODUCTION: Social networks contribute to normative reinforcement of HIV prevention strategies, knowledge sharing, and social capital, but little research has characterized the social networks of transgender women (TW) in Latin America. We conducted a mixed methods analysis of three network clusters of TW in Lima, Peru, to evaluate network composition, types of support exchanged, and patterns of communication. METHODS: We recruited TW residing in or affiliated with three "casas trans" (houses shared among TW) in Lima between April-May 2018. Eligible participants were 18 or older, self-repor

Addressing HIV stigma in healthcare, community, and legislative settings in Central and Eastern Europe.

INTRODUCTION: Surging HIV prevalence across countries of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) is largely a result of poor HIV care engagement and a lack of comprehensive support for key populations. This is fostered by widespread stigma across healthcare, community, and legislative settings. DISCUSSION: Throughout CEE, HIV stigma and intersectional stigma are serious obstacles to providing adequate medical care to people living with HIV. Anticipated and enacted (experienced) stigma from healthcare professionals, and fears of breaches in confidentiality, deter individuals from having an HIV test a
