Intravenous urography in patients with transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder. The incidence and implications of ureteral obstruction.

In order to study the value of excretory urography in the diagnosis of transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder, and also the incidence and implications of ureteral obstruction, 100 consecutive patients were studied. Of 73 patients with superficial tumours (stages Tis, Ta, T1) only 1 (1,4%) had hydronephrosis as a result of the bladder tumour. However, 2 further patients had hydronephrosis secondary to synchronous ureteral tumours. Of the 27 patients with muscle-invasive tumours, 10 (37%) had hydronephrosis at the time of diagnosis. Four patients who had normal upper tracts initially, develo…

Megalourethra.

We present 5 examples of megalourethra. All 5 cases were associated with the spectrum of the triad syndrome, ranging from minor hydronephrosis and undescended testis to gross hydronephrosis incompatible with survival. Initial management of this urethral defect is drainage followed later by reconstruction.

[THREE CASES OF IATROGENIC URETERAL INJURY ASSOCIATED WITH TOTAL LAPAROSCOPIC HYSTERECTOMY].

We report three cases of iatrogenic ureteral injury associated with total laparoscopic hysterectomy. Case 1 was a 50-year-old woman. She underwent total laparoscopic hysterectomy (TLH) for myoma uteri. Postoperatively, a blood test revealed renal dysfunction, and ultrasonography (US) revealed left hydronephrosis. She was referred to our department on the next day of TLH. Computed tomography (CT) revealed left hydronephrosis. Retrograde pyelography (RP) was tried, but the ureteral catheter could not be inserted into the left ureteral orifice. An operation was performed on the second day after T…

Ureteroinguinal Herniation with Consecutive Ureteral Stricture in a 2-Month-Old Infant: Case Report.

Inguinal herniation of ureter is an uncommon finding among children, with scarce reported cases in the literature to date, that can potentially lead to obstructive uropathy. We report a case of ureteroinguinal herniation discovered during an inguinal hernia repair in a patient with antenatally ultrasound finding of hydronephrosis. A 2-month-old infant with antenatal left hydronephrosis presented with left inguinal mass. Preoperative ultrasound showed an anechoic tubular image producing a mass effect on the left testicle, with suspected bladder herniation and/or dilated ureter toward the inguin…

The Diagnostic Efficacy of and Requirement for Postnatal Ultrasonography Screening for Congenital Anomalies of the Kidney and Urinary Tract.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to investigate the efficacy of postnatal ultrasonography in detecting congenital anomalies of the kidneys and urinary t … 46 (1.8%) of 2554 patients without anomalies on prenatal USG screening. The most common anomaly was hydronephrosis (69.6%). Thirty-two cases of hydronephrosis, three cases of renal agenesis, four cases of horseshoe kidney, one case of MCDK, and two cases of duplex systems which were not detected on prenatal USG were detected on postnatal USG. On the other hand, …

Is long-term sonographic followup necessary after uncomplicated ureteral reimplantation in children?

PURPOSE: We examined the necessity of postoperative ultrasound following surgical correction of vesicoureteral reflux beyond initial postoperative assessment. The followup among children who have undergone correction of vesicoureteral reflux has varied, and currently there are no standards to document how long postoperative monitoring for hydronephrosis, renal scarring or renal growth should continue. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study population included 128 children who underwent surgical correction of primary vesicoureteral reflux between 1992 and 2002. Data were collected as part of a retro…

Prenatal ultrasonographic and magnetic resonance imaging findings of congenital cloacal anomalies associated with meconium peritonitis.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Cloacal malformations are rare anomalies, occurring in females, and in which they demonstrate a single perineal orifice for urethra, vagina, and rectum. Prenatal ultrasonograms (US) of cloacal malformations sometimes show ascites, hydrocolpos, and hydronephrosis. We herein describe the characteristic prenatal US and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of the cloacal malformations associated with meconium peritonitis. METHODS: The pre- and postnatal records of 11 newborn patients with cloacal malformations, treated in our hospital from 1988 to 2004, were reviewed. All…

Endovascular repair of an abdominal aortic aneurysm in the presence of a hydronephrotic horseshoe kidney.

The aim of this paper is to report an unusual case of a patient with an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) and a hydronephrotic horseshoe kidney (HSK) that was repaired by endovascular means. An 81-year-old male patient with a known HSK was found to have hydronephrosis and an AAA. The patient's aneurysm was treated with an endovascular stent graft which required the covering of accessory renal arteries. He had an uneventful recovery with complete resolution of the hydronephrosis evident on a computed tomography scan performed seven months after the surgery. In conclusion, endovascular aneurysm re…

Thanatophoric Dysplasia With Concurrent Hydroureteronephrosis: A Rare Case Report From Rural Southern India.

Thanatophoric dysplasia (TD) is a severe and typically fatal skeletal disorder caused by mutations in the FGFR3 gene, often leading to perinatal death. It is characterized by extreme short-limb dwarfism and, occasionally, associated anomalies such as hydronephrosis. Prenatal diagnosis, usually made in the third trimester through ultrasound and genetic testing, is crucial for guiding management decisions. Here, we report a case of TD with hydronephrosis diagnosed at 24 weeks of gestation in a 24-year-old primigravida from rural southern India. Ultrasound findings included significantly short an…

Ultrasonographic diagnosis of renal disease in small animals.

Real-time ultrasonography was found to be useful in the diagnosis of hydronephrosis, renal calculi, and renal neoplasia in the dog and cat. One dog with hydronephorsis, one with renal calculi, and a cat with a renal neoplasm were scanned with a real-time ultrasonic scanner. Abnormal enlargement due to fluid accumulation was determined by ultrasonographic imaging in the case of hydronephrosis. The location and mobility of the renal calculus were observed during ultrasonography. An uneven contour and parenchymal masses in the neoplastic kidney were detected by ultrasonographic imaging of the cat…

Multilevel congenital ureteral obstruction in a two-year-old child: Staged reconstruction with neo-implantation and V-Y pyeloplasty.

Multilevel congenital ureteral obstruction involving the ureteropelvic junction (UPJ) and ureterovesical junction (UVJ) is exceedingly rare condition in pediatric urology and may cause progressive hydronephrosis and renal impairment if untreated. We report a two-year-old boy with antenatally detected right-sided hydronephrosis caused by obstruction involving the UPJ, mid-ureter, and UVJ, previously managed with nephrostomy. Magnetic resonance urography demonstrated massive hydronephrosis and delayed renal excretion. The reconstructive surgery using non-dismembered V-Y pyeloplasty and ureteral …

Non-surgical management of vesicoureteral junction obstruction: a case report.

OBJECTIVE: To report the case of a pediatric patient with bilateral hydronephrosis due to vesicoureteral junction obstruction (VUJO) that was treated non-surgically and to discuss the approach of this anomaly. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 25-month-old boy was referred without complaints for consultation due to prenatal ultrasound showing kidneys with cysts. He was under antibiotic prophylaxis. No family history of kidney disease and/or inherited disorders was reported. Renal ultrasound (RUS) at 2 days of life showed bilateral hydronephrosis, thus ruling out the possibility of kidney cystic disease. Dy…

Late urologic complications in aorto-iliac reconstructions.

Aortoiliac reconstructive hydroureteronephrosis after surgery may be due to an incorrect position of the .0.prosthesis, anteriorly to the ureter, to a reactive retroperitoneal fibrosis or to a sclerotic outcome caused by vessel and ureter dissection. It is important to consider the possible correlation of hydronephrosis with recurrent prosthetic infections, both as a consequence and as a pre-existing cause of the infective process itself. In the present study, 100 patients were examined, all affected with chronic peripheral obstructive arterial disease and operated on for aortoiliac reconstruc…
