[Thymus carcinoid in multiple endocrine neoplasms type I].

Thrombosis of the left subclavian vein occurred in a 44-year-old man. It was found to be caused by an atypical thymus carcinoid of the anterior mediastinum without carcinoid syndrome. Primary resection was not possible, but it was removed after three cycles of neoadjuvant chemotherapy with doxorubicin, cisplatin, vincristine and cyclophosphamide. Increased concentrations of alkaline phosphatase and parathormone were then noted. Subtotal parathyroidectomy revealed hyperplastic parathyroids. A gastrinoma was suspected from a history of peptic ulcer for many years which had persisted despite a Bi

[Alcoholic osteopathy].

Alcohol intake is one of the multiple risk factors for developing osteoporosis. Alcohol has direct toxic effects on osteoblasts which determines lower osteocalcin levels at an early stage, and histomorphometric changes later on. Some authors found not only diminished bone formation in alcoholics, but also increased bone resorption. The effect of alcoholism on calciotropic hormones includes fall of PTH serum levels after an acute or moderate alcohol intake, causing transient hypoparathyroidism. In chronic alcoholism, serum levels of vitamin D and its metabolites are decreased independently of a

[Noise: neuro-endocrine aspects].

Experimental study of neuro-endocrinological effects of noise stress shows neuro-mediator modifications. Exposure to stress induces a marked stimulation of the adrenergic structures which increases plasma concentrations of ACTH and glucosteroids. The increased secretion of the cortico-releasing factor (CRT) from the hypothalamo-hypophyseal system mediates a complex cascade in which other neuro-modulators also participate. Within the CNS, CRF activates the sympathetic nervous system, raising plasma concentrations of epinephrine and nor-epinephrine. These neuro-mediator and endocrine variations

Effects of cocaine hydrochloride on the male reproductive system.

The reproductive system effects of cocaine were studied in male rats. The analysis included measurements of circulating levels of luteinizing hormone (LH) and testosterone (T) by radioimmunoassay (RIA). The weights of the testes and sex accessory organs were also assessed and compared with control animals. Dosage level, duration of treatment, and interval between injection and sacrifice were the parameters examined. Following a single intraperitoneal (IP) injection, LH levels decreased over a 3-hour period. At a high dosage (40 mg/kg), cocaine caused a significant elevation in serum T followed

Radioimmunoassay of corticotropin-releasing hormone: methodology and clinical application.

Corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) levels in the human plasma and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and those in the rat hypothalamus, peripheral and hypophyseal portal plasma were studied by a specific h/r CRH RIA and an immunoaffinity procedure. CRH levels in the plasma and CSF were low in patients with hypercortisolemia and those with hypothalamic hypopituitarism, but high in patients with hypocortisolemia except for patients with hypothalamic hypopituitarism. Plasma CRH responded to insulin-induced hypoglycemia (ITT) those with Addison's disease and those with primary hypopituitarism, but not

Alterations in central neurotransmitter receptor binding sites following estradiol implantation in female rats.

The subcutaneous implantation of an estradiol pellet (10 mg) into female rats induced a hypophyseal hyperplasia with hyperprolactinaemia. Examination of neurotransmitter receptors in the hippocampus, striatum and cerebral cortex one month after the implantation revealed that estrogenization was associated with: an increased density of (3)H-domperidone binding sites (D(2) receptors) in the striatum and reduced numbers of (3)H-serotonin high affinity sites (5-HT(1) receptors) in the hippocampus and of (3)H-muscimol binding sites (GABA receptors) in the hippocampus, striatum and cerebral cortex.

Mechanisms of development of morphological changes in mammals aboard biological satellites.

After orbital space flights lasting 19.5--22.5 days, disturbances are observed in mineral metabolism in rats, which are morphologically manifested as osteoporosis of the spongy sections of long hollow skeletal bones, periosteocytic osteolysis of them, atrophy and dystrophy of skeletal muscles, and inhibition of erythroid growth of bone marrow, which occurred and developed in weightlessness as a result of deprivation of motor activity due to removal (or reduction) of static load from the musculoskeletal system. Development of stress reaction, which is apparently intensified at certain stages of

[Morphological classification of pituitary adenomas and its value for clinical diagnosis].

Pituitary adenomas should be classified not only by their tinctorial affinities but also by their degree of differentiation. Then useful correlation to the clinical data can be obtained; On this principle our own collection of 299 tumors was classified in undifferentiated acidophilic, highly differentiated acidophilic GH cell-, highly differentiated acidophilic prolactin cell-adenomas, in undifferentiated mucoid cell-, highly differentiated mucoid ACTH cell-, highly differentiated mucoid TSH cell-adenomas, in chromophobic adenomas of small cell type and of large cell type, and in oncocytic ade

A systematic review on the effect of microplastics on the hypothalamus-pituitary-ovary axis based on animal studies.

Humans are exposed to microplastics through three routes: oral, dermal, and respiratory. These tiny polymer particles enter the body and accumulate in various organs. One of the most sensitive organs to microplastics is the female reproductive system. In this review, manuscripts that investigated the effects of various microplastics on the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis in laboratory animals were collected with relevant keywords. This axis plays an important role in the function of the female reproductive system. Effects on endpoints of this axis, including hormonal changes, gene expressi

Longer duration of intact hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis buffers the adverse impact of late-life frailty in male dogs.

Research on physical frailty has focused primarily on understanding the factors that lead to frailty development and on discovering strategies that might prevent or postpone the onset of frailty. In contrast, relatively little attention has focused on biological factors that may influence resilience to frailty once it occurs. It has been demonstrated that low serum testosterone and other markers of hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis deterioration may contribute significantly to frailty development in older men. Here, we test the hypothesis that lifetime HPG axis integrity provides a cri

Immune Dysregulation in Depression and Anxiety: A Review of the Immune Response in Disease and Treatment.

Rates of depression and anxiety have increased significantly in recent decades, with many patients experiencing treatment-resistant symptoms. Beyond psychiatric manifestations, these conditions are associated with heightened risks of suicide, cardiovascular disease, chronic pain, and fatigue. Emerging research suggests that neuroinflammation, immune dysregulation, and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis dysfunction contribute to their pathophysiology, often interacting bidirectionally with stress. While current first-line treatments primarily target neurotransmitter imbalances, many patients d

Psychoneuro-oncology: How chronic stress grows cancer.

Chronic stress is an inextricable part of modern daily living; practically all human diseases, particularly cancer, are negatively affected by it. Numerous studies have shown that stressors, depression, social isolation, and adversity correlate with a worse prognosis for patients with cancer, with increased symptoms, early metastasis, and a shortened life span. Prolonged or very intense adverse life episodes are perceived and assessed by the brain and translated into physiologic responses mediated through relays to the hypothalamus and locus coereleus. This response triggers the activation of

[Research advances on post-burn cognitive disorders and its mechanism].

Cognitive disorders after burns is an important problem that cannot be ignored in the diagnosis and treatment of burn patients. Its mechanism may be related to the activation of inflammatory response, destruction of the blood-brain barrier, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis imbalance, nerve cell changes, etc. Mechanism-specific prevention and treatment will be the best choice to reduce post-burn cognitive disorders in the future. This review introduces the research advances in epidemiology, risk factors, possible pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of cognitive disorders in bu

Neuroendocrine interactions of the stress and reproductive axes.

Reproduction is controlled by a sequential regulation of the hypothalamo-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis. The HPG axis integrates multiple inputs to maintain proper reproductive functions. It has long been demonstrated that stress alters fertility. Nonetheless, the central mechanisms of how stress interacts with the reproductive system are not fully understood. One of the major pathways that is activated during the stress response is the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. In this review, we discuss several aspects of the interactions between these two neuroendocrine systems to offer insigh

Adrenal insufficiency: Physiology, clinical presentation and diagnostic challenges.

Adrenal insufficiency (AI) is a serious condition, which can arise from pathology affecting the adrenal gland itself (primary adrenal insufficiency, PAI), hypothalamic or pituitary pathology (secondary adrenal insufficiency, SAI), or as a result of suppression of the hypothalamic-pituitaryadrenal (HPA) axis by exogenous glucocorticoid therapy (tertiary adrenal insufficiency, TAI). AI is associated with an increase in morbidity and mortality and a reduction in quality of life. In addition, the most common cause of PAI, autoimmune adrenalitis, may be associated with a variety of other autoimmune

A comparison between the equine and bovine hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenocortical axis.

In this review, we address the function of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) axis with special emphasis on the comparison between the bovine and equine species. The pars intermedia of the pituitary gland is particularly well developed in horses and cattle. However, its function is not well appreciated in cattle yet. The Wulzen's cone of the adenohypophysis is a special feature of ruminants. Total basal cortisol concentration is much higher in horses than that in cows with similar free cortisol fractions. Corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) concentrations in equine pituitary veno

Pulsatility of Hypothalamo-Pituitary Hormones: A Challenge in Quantification.

GABA depolarizes immature neurons because of a high [Cl(-)](i) and orchestrates giant depolarizing potential (GDP) generation. Zilberter and coworkers (Rheims et al., 2009; Holmgren et al., 2010) showed recently that the ketone body metabolite DL-3-hydroxybutyrate (DL-BHB) (4 mM), lactate (4 mM), or pyruvate (5 mM) shifted GABA actions to hyperpolarizing, suggesting that the depolarizing effects of GABA are attributable to inadequate energy supply when glucose is the sole energy source. We now report that, in rat pups (postnatal days 4-7), plasma D-BHB, lactate, and pyruvate levels are 0.9, 1.

60 YEARS OF NEUROENDOCRINOLOGY: The structure of the neuroendocrine hypothalamus: the neuroanatomical legacy of Geoffrey Harris.

In November 1955, Geoffrey Harris published a paper based on the Christian A Herter Lecture he had given earlier that year at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD, USA. The paper reviewed the contemporary research that was starting to explain how the hypothalamus controlled the pituitary gland. In the process of doing so, Harris introduced a set of properties that helped define the neuroendocrine hypothalamus. They included: i) three criteria that putative releasing factors for adenohypophysial hormones would have to fulfill; ii) an analogy between the representation of body parts in the

Hypopituitarism following radiotherapy.

Deficiencies in anterior pituitary hormones secretion ranging from subtle to complete occur following radiation damage to the hypothalamic-pituitary (h-p) axis, the severity and frequency of which correlate with the total radiation dose delivered to the h-p axis and the length of follow up. Selective radiosensitivity of the neuroendocrine axes, with the GH axis being the most vulnerable, accounts for the high frequency of GH deficiency, which usually occurs in isolation following irradiation of the h-p axis with doses less than 30 Gy. With higher radiation doses (30-50 Gy), however, the freque
