Effects of marijuana use on impulsivity and hostility in daily life.

BACKGROUND: Marijuana use is increasingly prevalent among young adults. While research has found adverse effects associated with marijuana use within experimentally controlled laboratory settings, it is unclear how recreational marijuana use affects day-to-day experiences in users. The present study sought to examine the effects of marijuana use on within-person changes in impulsivity and interpersonal hostility in daily life using smartphone administered assessments. METHODS: Forty-three participants with no substance dependence reported on their alcohol consumption, tobacco use, recreationa

The mediator roles of trait anxiety, hostility, and impulsivity in the association between childhood trauma and dissociation in male substance-dependent inpatients.

The aim of this study was to investigate the mediator roles of negative affect, aggression, and impulsivity in the association between childhood trauma and dissociation in male substance-dependent inpatients. In addition, the effect of some variables that may be related with childhood trauma and dissociation among treatment-seeking substance dependents, such as substance of choice (alcohol/drug), mean of current age, and age at regular substance use was controlled. Participants were consecutively admitted 200 male substance-dependent inpatients. Patients were investigated with the Dissociative

Behavioral addictions.

Behavioral addictions are slowly becoming recognized as a valid category of psychiatric disorder as shown by the recent allocation of pathological gambling to this category in DSM-5. However, several other types of psychiatric disorder proposed to be examples of behavioral addictions have yet to be accorded this formal acknowledgment and are dispersed across other sections of the DSM-5. This brief review marks this important point in the evolution of this concept and looks to future investigation of behavioral addictions with the theoretical frameworks currently being used successfully to inve

A systematic review of nonpharmacological treatment options for skin picking disorder.

Skin picking disorder (SPD) is a well-described neuropsychiatric disorder that causes severe stress and impairment. However, there is no clear protocol for treating patients, and only a relatively small body of literature evaluating treatment approaches. This review aims to summarize and compare recent publications and provide an up-to-date guide of current nonpharmacological treatments for SPD. A literature review was conducted on all nonpharmacological SPD treatment studies published between 2017 and 2023 using PubMed, CINAHL Plus with Full Text (EBSCO) and Scopus. Using the Risk-Return Model to Explain Gambling Disorder Symptoms in Youth: An Empirical Investigation with Italian Adolescents.

Historically, individual differences research has sought to explain problem-gambling severity in adolescence by means of unitary "risk-taking" traits, such as sensation seeking and impulsivity, implying that these personality traits account for risk-taking tendencies across different types of behaviors and situations. However, increasing empirical evidence suggests that risk taking seems to be better conceptualized as a domain-specific construct. In the current study, we adopted a psychological risk-return framework, which posits that perceptions of perceived risks and benefits predict gamblin

Do correctional facilities correct our youth?: Effects of incarceration and court-ordered community service on personality development.

Millions of individuals are currently incarcerated in the United States. However, little is known about the effects of incarceration on personality development, particularly during the critical life stage of adolescence. In a large longitudinal sample, adolescents and young adults (N = 7,736) regularly completed personality measures and assessments of court-ordered punishments over more than 10 years. Using propensity score weighting and multilevel growth curve modeling, we found that personality prospectively predicted the likelihood of incarceration and court-ordered community service. Speci

Mixture Modeling of Nonsuicidal Self-Injury and Binge Eating: Behaviors and Motives.

Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) and binge eating frequently co-occur. These behaviors are often used to alleviate distress. Previous studies examining this co-occurrence have used a variable-centered approach. The current study used a person-centered approach (mixture modeling) to examine how individuals cluster in groups based on their past-month NSSI, past-month objective and subjective binge episodes (OBEs and SBEs, respectively), and endorsement of coping motives for NSSI and eating in two large samples of emerging adults. Validators included self-report measures of emotion regulation, impu

Social cognitive mediators of the relationship between impulsivity traits and adolescent alcohol use: Identifying unique targets for prevention.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Impulsivity impacts adolescent alcohol use. We aimed to prospectively evaluate the cognitive mechanisms outlined in two-factor models and the protective role of coping skills. METHODS: Two cohorts of adolescents followed for three years were included in the study (younger cohort: N = 908, aged 10–12 years at Time 1; older cohort: N = 943, aged 12–15 years at Time 1). Constructs measured included impulsivity (reward drive, rash impulsiveness), positive social alcohol expectancies (PSAE), drinking-refusal self-efficacy (DRSE), problem-based coping skills, family and communi

Personality pathology and intentional self-harm: cross-cutting insights from categorical and dimensional models.

This paper reviews current literature on the links between personality pathology and intentional self-harm, including nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) and suicidal behaviors. Specifically, this review highlights recent advances stemming from longitudinal, epidemiological, and health registry studies, as well as emerging research on pathological personality traits and intentional self-harm, and integrates current knowledge across dimensional and categorical frameworks to provide recommendations for clinical practice and future research. This review provides strong evidence that personality disord

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) behaviour explained by dysfunctioning reinforcement and extinction processes.

Inattentiveness, overactivity and impulsiveness are presently regarded as the main clinical symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Inattention is, however, a characteristic of most psychiatric disorders. It is argued that the ADHD Inattentive subtype may have heterogeneous origins and be qualitatively different from the ADHD Hyperactive/Impulsive subtype. At the neurobiological level, ADHD symptoms may to a large extent be caused by a dysfunctioning dopamine system: A dysfunctioning meso-limbo-cortical dopamine branch will produce altered reinforcement and extinction proc

Impulse noise injury prediction based on the cochlear energy.

The current impulse noise criteria for the protection against impulse noise injury do not incorporate an objective measure of hearing protection. A new biomechanically-based model has been developed based on improvement of the Auditory Hazard Assessment Algorithm for the Human (AHAAH) using the integrated cochlear energy (ICE) as the damage risk correlate (DRC). The model parameters have been corrected using the latest literature data. The anomalous dose-response inversion behavior of the AHAAH model was eliminated. The modeling results show that the annular ligament (AL) parameters are the do

Patterns of cortical thickness associated with impulse control disorders in Parkinson's disease.

Previous functional neuroimaging studies in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients with impulse control disorders (ICDs) demonstrated dysfunction of the reward network, although the extent of anatomical changes is unclear. The aim of this study was to measure brain cortical thickness and subcortical volumes, and to assess their relationship with presence and severity of symptoms, in PD patients with and without ICDs. We studied 110 PD patients (N=58 with ICDs) and 33 healthy controls (all negative for ICDs) who underwent an extensive neurological, neuropsychological, and behavioral assessment as we

The neurobiology of borderline personality disorder: the synergy of "nature and nurture".

The author reviews the current state of our knowledge concerning the neurobiology of borderline personality disorder (BPD). A converging body of scientific evidence indicates that patients with BPD suffer from impairments in the brain systems that regulate impulsivity, aggression, and affect. This article reviews data on the neurobiology of the symptoms of BPD, including emotional and behavioral dysregulation, identity disturbance, cognitive impairments, and interpersonal difficulties. The author first considers the evolutionary context in which BPD can develop to put the neurobiological findi

Psychiatric disorders in women with bulimia nervosa and their first-degree relatives: effects of comorbid substance dependence.

OBJECTIVE: Women with bulimia nervosa (BN) and comorbid substance dependence often display impulsive behaviors. We assessed Axis I and II psychiatric diagnoses in their first-degree relatives in order to understand the etiological factors that may contribute to this subtype of BN. METHOD: We used contemporary family-epidemiological methodology to compare the lifetime prevalence of psychiatric disorders among 47 women with BN and 44 non-eating-disordered community control women, and their first-degree relatives (177 and 190, respectively). BN probands were stratified by the presence (n = 20) o…

Muscarinic Acetylcholine M2 Receptors Regulate Lateral Habenula Neuron Activity and Control Cocaine Seeking Behavior.

The lateral habenula (LHb) balances reward and aversion by opposing activation of brain reward nuclei and is involved in the inhibition of responding for cocaine in a model of impulsive behavior. Previously, we reported that the suppression of cocaine seeking was prevented by LHb inactivation or nonselective antagonism of LHb mAChRs. Here, we investigate mAChR subtypes mediating the effects of endogenous acetylcholine in this model of impulsive drug seeking and define cellular mechanisms in which mAChRs alter LHb neuron activity. Using in vitro electrophysiology, we find that LHb neurons are d…

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and disordered eating behaviors: links, risks, and challenges faced.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that often persists in adulthood. It is defined by inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity. ADHD is associated with many comorbidities, including eating disorders (EDs). In the last decade, studies have reported that ADHD is linked with binge EDs, bulimia nervosa, and anorexia nervosa. Many postulates have been proposed to explain the association: 1) impulsive behavior in ADHD patients leads to disordered eating behavior; 2) other psychologic comorbidities present in ADHD patients account for eating behavior;…

The construct and predictive validity of a dynamic assessment of young children learning to read: implications for RTI frameworks.

The purpose of this study was to examine the construct and predictive validity of a dynamic assessment (DA) of decoding learning. Students (N = 318) were assessed in the fall of first grade on an array of instruments that were given in hopes of forecasting responsiveness to reading instruction. These instruments included DA as well as one-point-in-time (static) measures of early alphabetic knowledge, rapid automatized naming (RAN), phonemic awareness, oral vocabulary, listening comprehension, attentive behavior, and hyperactive or impulsive behavior. An IQ test was administered in spring of se…
