A retrospective study of 534 bed-rests permitted us to specify the reasons of admissions and mortality in the hospital service of pediatrics, Port-Gentil, Gabon, from June 1985 to May 1986: a high mortality rate (7.5%) with, specially, diarrheas (46%) and proteinocaloric malnutrition (19%). The other reasons of mortality are constituted by infections and neonatal diseases. Priority in public health seems to be child welfare (vaccinations, primary health care in the whole province of Ogoue, health certificates...).

Background: Pulmonary hypertension is one of the most common co-morbidities in infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), but its risk factors are unclear. The onset of pulmonary hypertension in BPD has been associated with poor morbidity- and mortality-related outcomes in infants. Two review and meta-analysis studies have evaluated the risk factors and outcomes associated with pulmonary hypertension in infants with BPD. However, the limitations in those studies and the publication of recent cohort studies warrant our up-to-date study. We designed a systematic review and meta-analysis to e

BACKGROUND: Less than 2.7% of infants undergoing congenital heart disease operations have difficulty weaning from invasive mechanical ventilation. In such instances, clinicians may choose to perform tracheostomy. Limited literature has examined tracheostomy placement specifically in infants with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS). This study evaluated the risk factors for tracheostomy placement in infants with HLHS and examined the outcomes of these infants before their first hospital discharge.
METHODS: This retrospective analysis of the Pediatric Heath Information System data set includ

BACKGROUND: Perinatal lung growth is highly vulnerable to inflammation and intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), two major risk factors for chronic lung disease (CLD) in preterm neonates. However, the balance between extremely low gestational age (ELGA) and IUGR in very preterm infants as risk factors for CLD and co-morbidities remains poorly explored.
OBJECTIVES: This single-center study aims to compare neonatal morbidity (including CLD) and mortality among ELGA infants with normal birth weight (ELGA-AGA), very preterm infants with IUGR <3rd percentile (VLGA-IUGR) and very preterm infants

BACKGROUND: Globally, about 2.3 million neonates die annually, most of them in low-resource and conflict-affected countries. In Yemen, ongoing humanitarian crises put children at continued risk, with neonates being the most vulnerable group. This study aimed to assess the in-hospital neonatal mortality rate and to describe the demographic and clinical characteristics.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort design reviewing all neonatal admissions to the Neonatal Inpatient Department (NIPD) at Al-Salam Hospital in Amran Governorate, January to December 2023. Data were extracted from hospital records

BACKGROUND: Aid sanctions are a type of financial punishment imposed on a country by other countries or international organisations in response to a political coup, armed conflict, or human rights abuses. Humanitarian catastrophes in Burkina Faso, Sudan, and Myanmar have brought aid sanctions to the centre of the foreign affairs strategy debate because of their inadvertent negative effects on human health. Our analysis investigates the effects of aid sanctions from 1990 to 2019 on maternal and child mortality. These questions are particularly relevant in the context of the abrupt shift in US f

IMPORTANCE: In resource-constrained settings where the neonatal mortality rate (NMR) is high due to preventable causes and health systems are underused, community-based interventions can increase newborn survival by improving health care practices.
OBJECTIVES: To develop and evaluate the effectiveness of a community-based maternal and newborn care services package to reduce perinatal and neonatal mortality in rural Pakistan.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cluster randomized clinical trial was conducted between November 1, 2012, and December 31, 2013, in district Rahim Yar Khan in th

BACKGROUND: Globally, the burden of perinatal mortality is high. Reliable measures of perinatal mortality are necessary for planning and assessing prenatal, obstetric, and newborn care services. However, accurate record-keeping is often a major challenge in low resource settings. In this study we aimed to assess the utility of delivery ward register data, captured at birth by healthcare providers, to determine causes of perinatal mortality in one specialized and one general hospital in south Ethiopia.
METHODS: Three years (2014-2016) of delivery register for 13,236 births were reviewed from J

Late presentation is common among African HIV-1-infected infants. Incidence and correlates of mortality were examined in 99 infants with HIV-1 diagnosis by 5 months of age. Twelve-month survival was 66.8% (95% confidence interval: 55.9-75.6%). World Health Organization stage 3 or 4, underweight, wasting, microcephaly, low hemoglobin, pneumonia and gastroenteritis predicted mortality. Early HIV-1 diagnosis with antiretroviral therapy before symptomatic disease is critical for infant survival.

BACKGROUND: The definition of acute kidney injury (AKI) has evolved over the years, and three definitions have been adapted including pediatric risk injury failure, loss of kidney function (pRIFLE), Acute Kidney Injury Network (AKIN), and Neonatal Modified Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO). We sought to report the prevalence and outcome of (AKI) according to the three existing definitions in extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants.
METHODS: In a retrospective cohort study, medical records of all ELBW infants (<1000 g) admitted to our neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) betwee

BACKGROUND: Clinical expertise and skill of pediatric housestaff improve over the academic year, and performance varies despite supervision by faculty neonatologists. It is possible that variation in clinical expertise of housestaff affects important clinical outcomes in infants in ICUs.
OBJECTIVE: Our goal was to test the hypothesis that there is a decrease in morbidity and mortality in infants admitted to an NICU over the course of the academic year.
DESIGN/METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted using data on infants with birthweight 401 to 1500 g and >or=24 weeks' gestation (n =

In a retrospective study sex ratio and mortality were analysed in a captive colony of common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus). Seven hundred and thirty-five infants in 294 litters (20 singletons, 119 twins, 140 triplets, 14 quadruplets) out of 57 breeding females were evaluated. The sex ratio at birth was 0.95 males:1.0 females. The frequency of males and females, as well as the sex composition of twins and triplets confirm the assumption of dizygotic twinning in the common marmoset. According to age at death, 9 categories were differentiated, with perinatal mortality being the highest. Once ear
