The Role of Clinical Judgment in Psychiatry.

Clinical judgment is currently perceived as an intuitive art that is going to be replaced by growing technology and artificial intelligence. Even though patients look for good clinical judgment when they seek medical attention and clinicians rely on it, the topic is seldom mentioned and discussed in the literature. In their everyday practice, psychiatrists use observation, description, and classification; test explanatory hypotheses; and formulate clinical decisions based on clinical judgment. The aim of this review was to examine the current role of clinical judgment in psychiatry. We first o

"We Don't Get Drugs Targeted for Us:" Applying the Integrated Behavioral Model to Understand Why Black Women Chose to Participate in a Breast Cancer Clinical Trial.

Guided by the integrated behavioral model, the authors interviewed 14 Black breast cancer survivors (N = 14) who had participated in a breast cancer clinical trial. This study aimed to better understand what may motivate Black women to engage in medical research and decide to participate in medical research. Findings revealed that Black women's altruistic desires to serve others and their communities are greatly influenced by the need to leave a "legacy" of better treatment for other Black women. The participants mostly learned about clinical trials through communicating with friends, family,

Behavioral health providers' perspectives on supporting patient decisions in sharing treatment information in substance use and mental health settings: a qualitative study.

OBJECTIVE: Privacy and confidentiality are particularly important for individuals receiving care for behavioral health (BH) conditions. This study aims to explore BH service providers' experiences when they introduce and discuss consent to share BH treatment information with patients. METHODS: BH providers participated in virtual focus groups (FGs). 100-120 min discussions were recorded, transcribed, coded using both a priori and open coding and analyzed for themes. RESULTS: Participants (n = 12) from 9 U.S. states participated in the FGs. Participants emphasized that discussing consent is a

Invisible Violations: An Exploratory Study into Public Sentiments on Nonconsensual Distribution of Intimate Images in Trinidad and Tobago.

Nonconsensual distribution of intimate images (NDII), commonly misrepresented as "revenge porn," is a growing form of cyber harassment and online sexual violence that disproportionately affects women and challenges traditional social frameworks. Despite increasing global research on NDII, Caribbean-based studies remain scarce, leaving critical gaps in understanding how regional cultural norms, gender roles, and legal structures shape public perceptions of this phenomenon. This study employs a mixed-methods approach to examine public attitudes toward NDII in Trinidad and Tobago, analyzing demog

Women's experiences of facility-based abortion care: A WHO qualitative evidence synthesis.

The World Health Organization's Abortion Care Guideline requires abortion care to be not only safe but also effective, efficient, accessible, equitable, acceptable, and person centered. We synthesized qualitative evidence from 111 papers from 42 countries selected from a systematic search of literature published between January 1996 and September 2023. We developed a typology of experiences experienced by abortion seekers engaging with facility-based abortion care services at any stage of the abortion care pathway; factors that modify the experience as well as the consequences of these experie

Anticipated Responses to Genetic Testing for Alzheimer's Disease Susceptibility among Latinos in Northern Manhattan.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a debilitating neurodegenerative illness that has become a growing concern for older adults. As such, apolipoprotein E (APOE) genetic testing has become more commonly used to identify individuals' susceptibility to AD. An underrepresented population in AD research, Latinos will be disproportionately affected by AD in the coming decades. To better aid efforts in education and genetic risk counseling for Latino populations, we must first understand the anticipated psychological and behavioral consequences of APOE genetic risk counseling. We conducted semi-structured i

Socially active neighborhoods: construct operationalization for aging in place, health promotion and psychometric testing.

From the year 2003 when the first walkability scale was published to date, person-environment fit models and empirical research, some of which was published in Health Promotion International, have encapsulated healthy communities in 'neighborhood walkability'. While there is no doubt that neighborhood walkability positively influences health-seeking behaviors and health, recent models suggest that their measurement and conceptualization have not emphasized the role played by psychosocial and personal factors in aging in place. Thus, the development of scales measuring human ecosystem factors h

"We are not a typical family anymore": Exploring the experiences and support needs of fathers of children with Fragile X syndrome in Australia.

A diagnosis of the X-linked condition Fragile X syndrome (FXS) in a child commonly reveals the mother's carrier status. Previous research focused on the genetic counseling process for the child and maternal family, despite calls for more research on the support needs of fathers. This study explored experiences and support needs of fathers at least 1 year after their child's FXS diagnosis to understand barriers and enablers and optimize health outcomes for the family. In-depth interviews were conducted with 11 fathers recruited through the Australian Genetics of Learning Disability Service and

Quality of Life and Opioid Use Motives: Direct and Indirect Associations with Risky Opioid Use in a Community Sample of Adults.

Purpose: The opioid epidemic in the United States has resulted in mass mortality and economic costs exceeding $1 trillion. Poor health-related quality of life is evident among individuals entering treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD). Yet, little research has examined the influence of quality of life on risky opioid use among non-treatment-seeking adults. To help inform OUD prevention efforts, this study examined the association among quality of life domains, opioid use motives, and risky opioid behaviors in a community sample of opioid users. Methods: Participants (N = 278) were adults who

A comprehensive model of predictors of suicide attempt in individuals with panic disorder: Results from a national 3-year prospective study.

OBJECTIVE: People with panic disorder are at increased risk of suicide. Multiple factors influence their risk suggesting a need to combine them into an integrative model to develop more effective suicide prevention strategies for this population. In this report, we sought to build a comprehensive model of the 3-year risk of suicide attempt in individuals with panic disorder using a longitudinal nationally representative study, the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC; wave 1, 2001-2002; wave 2, 2004-2005). METHOD: We used structural equation modeling to simu

Depression and anxiety mediate the relationship between frontotemporal white matter integrity and quality of life in distressed young adults.

Depression and anxiety have been linked to poor quality of life (QoL) - one's subjective perception of relationships, physical health, daily functioning, general sense of well-being and life satisfaction. Elucidating abnormal white matter microstructure associated with mood and other symptoms and QoL is important to facilitate treatment. Ninety-six young adults (18-25 years old) seeking help for psychological distress, irrespective of presence or absence of psychiatric diagnosis completed diffusion weighted and anatomical scans, clinical and behavioral measures, and QoL assessment. We examined

Relationships between Premonitory Urge and Anxiety in Youth with Chronic Tic Disorders.

Tourette's Disorder and other chronic tic disorders are common neurodevelopmental conditions. One characteristic of tic disorders is the premonitory urge, an aversive or unpleasant sensory phenomenon that may precede tics. Initial examination of premonitory urge in pediatric tic disorders suggests that awareness and experience of sensations preceding tics may be related to anxiety and OCD. However, it may be possible that specific anxiety-related symptoms, such as anxious physiologic arousal, are particularly relevant to the experience of premonitory urge. The current study examines relationsh

Eating disorders and pathological gambling in males: can they be differentiated by means of weight history and temperament and character traits?

In the present study, we investigated whether binge/purge eating disorders (ED) and pathological gambling (PG) in males can be differentiated by means of weight history and temperament and character traits. We investigated 43 male ED patients, 46 pathological gamblers and 46 healthy controls (HC) by means of lifetime weight information and the Cloninger's Temperament and Character Inventory-Revised (TCI-R). The MANCOVA results showed that ED patients showed significantly more lifetime weight fluctuations compared with PG and HC after controlling for age. Additionally, both ED and PG patients s

Using Market Research to Characterize College Students and Identify Potential Targets for Influencing Health Behaviors.

Marketing campaigns, such as those developed by the tobacco industry, are based on market research, which defines segments of a population by assessing psychographic characteristics (i.e., attitudes, interests). This study uses a similar approach to define market segments of college smokers, to examine differences in their health behaviors (smoking, drinking, binge drinking, exercise, diet), and to determine the validity of these segments. A total of 2,265 undergraduate students aged 18-25 years completed a 108-item online survey in fall 2008 assessing demographic, psychographic (i.e., attitud

Comparison of assessments of children's eating-disordered behaviors by interview and questionnaire.

OBJECTIVE: In adults, interview methods may detect eating-disordered behaviors more accurately than self-report methods. However, no studies have investigated the relationships between interview and self-report assessments in children. We compared results from the Eating Disorder Examination adapted for Children (ChEDE) with the Adolescent version of the Questionnaire on Eating and Weight Patterns (QEWP-A) and with the Children's Eating Attitude Test (ChEAT) in a nontreatment sample of overweight and normal weight children. METHOD: The ChEDE, QEWP-A, and ChEAT were administered to 46 overweig
