Listening to Unheard Voices: Addressing Systemic Racism to Improve Maternity Care for Black Women After Perinatal Loss.

Black women in the United States experience inequities in perinatal and neonatal mortality, contributing to psychological stress during and after perinatal loss. This analysis drew on a subset of interviews from a larger qualitative dataset and explored the experiences of 22 Black women who experienced perinatal loss and were pregnant or had given birth after a loss, focusing on feeling unheard by healthcare providers. Semi-structured interviews were conducted, and data were analyzed using descriptive coding and inductive thematic analysis. Three themes emerged: unheard and dismissed concerns,

Clinical Outcomes and Patient Experiences With Celiprolol Therapy in Vascular Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome: The First Non-European Cohort.

Vascular Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (vEDS) is a hereditary connective tissue disorder caused by heterozygous pathogenic variants in COL3A1. European studies have shown that celiprolol may reduce the risk of life-threatening vascular events, but outcomes in non-European populations and the therapy's psychological impact remain unclear. We conducted a retrospective cohort study of individuals aged ≥ 20 years with genetically confirmed vEDS in a single referral center in Japan between 2000 and 2024. Clinical, molecular, and treatment data were obtained from medical records, and semi-structured interv

Association between Dentofacial Features and Bullying from Childhood to Adulthood: A Systematic Review.

Bullying occurs when an individual is repeatedly victimised by negative actions performed by peers. As oral features, like malocclusion and dental structural defects, can promote psychological distress, which is also found in those who are bullied, we aimed to study the association between orofacial conditions and bullying. A systematic review (PROSPERO CRD42022331693), including articles dealing with bullying and dentofacial traits, was performed following the PRISMA chart. The iterative search of eligible publications was carried out on 27 March 2023 on four databases (PubMed, PubPsych, Web

Experiences of peer-trainers in a take-home naloxone program: Results from a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Take-home naloxone programs (THN) are harm reduction programs with the aim of reducing the number of deaths caused by opioid overdoses. A THN program in Montreal called the PROFAN project was implemented with the goal of reducing overdoses through the use of peer-trainers. Peer-trainers are people who are currently or have previously used drugs, who are trained in overdose prevention and are then responsible for delivering a training session to other individuals who use drugs. While studies on other peer-led programs have shown that peer-helpers gain numerous benefits from their ro

Long-term consequences of traumatic experiences: an assessment of former political detainees in Romania.

BACKGROUND: Research has suggested that organized violence and torture have long-term psychological effects that persist throughout the lifespan. The present survey aimed at examining the prevalence of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and other disorders and symptoms, all present in old age, as long-term consequences of politically motivated violence in a comparison design. METHODS: A group of former political detainees (N = 59, mean age 73.5 years) who had been arrested by the Romanian communist regime were compared to an age- and gender-matched control group (N = 39). PTSD was assessed

What is the interaction between body image and yoga in women who practice yoga?

We aimed to describe the experiences of women practicing yoga and their perceptions of body image, as well as to explore how women perceive the relationship between yoga practice and body image. To achieve this goal, a phenomenological approach was used in this study. The study was conducted with 20 yoga practitioners who were selected based on criterion sampling. The data were collected through semi structured interviews with the participants. The data obtained from the interviews were analyzed via inductive content analysis. As a result of the qualitative data analysis, five themes were iden

Beyond Accessible Mobility: Insights into Psychosocial Inclusivity Dimensions in Personal Transport.

The importance of psychosocial aspects has been gradually recognised in the field of inclusive design. A critical review of existing literature, however, such as design, healthcare, psychology, and sociology, on psychosocial aspects of inclusivity identifies a two-fold research gap which is a limited understanding of both definition and dimensions of psychosocial inclusivity in the field of inclusive design. Such concept of psychosocial inclusivity is an inherently context-dependent and multi-faceted concept. Accordingly, a 'personal mobility' was focused on in this paper as one key context to

Factors associated with relapse among opiate addicts in an out-patient detoxification programme.

Relapse is a central problem in the treatment of addictive behaviour, and a specific problem in the out-patient treatment of the opiate withdrawal syndrome. This study investigated factors associated with relapse among 42 opiate addicts receiving out-patient detoxification treatment at a London drug-dependence clinic. All subjects completed a questionnaire about their social, psychological, and environmental circumstances in the week before interview, and were interviewed within the first two weeks of the programme. Forty per cent had lapsed to illicit heroin abuse within the previous week. In

Qualitative Assessment of Health-Related Quality of Life Impacts Associated with Sickle Cell Disease in the United States and United Kingdom.

INTRODUCTION: Individuals living with sickle cell disease (SCD) commonly report impaired health-related quality of life (HRQoL). However, impacts of SCD on HRQoL and the unmet needs of SCD treatment/management are under-researched. This study characterized the impact of SCD on HRQoL and identified the unmet needs of individuals with SCD. METHODS: Adults with SCD (aged ≥ 18 years) and caregivers of adolescents (aged 12‒17) with SCD in the United States (US) and United Kingdom (UK) participated in one-on-one virtual semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions (hereafter referred to a
