Long-term follow-up of bilateral ectasia after laser-assisted Small-Incision Lenticule Extraction (SMILE) with known risk factors.

PURPOSE: To report the long-term follow-up of bilateral ectasia after laser-assisted small-incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) with known risk factors. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 23-year-old woman. Preoperative refraction was - 7.25 -2.00 × 20 in the right eye and -7.25 -1.50 × 155 in the left eye. Maximal keratometry was 47.32 diopters and 48.37 diopters, respectively, which was a contraindication to Laser Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK) and a SMILE was proposed in 2015. One year after surgery, ectasia developed in the left eye and crosslinking (CXL) was performed. Two ye

Effect of corneal curvature on optical zone decentration and its impact on astigmatism and higher-order aberrations in SMILE and LASIK.

PURPOSE: To determine the association between anterior corneal curvature and optical zone centration as well as its impact on aberration profiles in small-incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) and laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK). METHODS: Seventy-eight eyes of 78 patients treated with SMILE (45 eyes) and LASIK (33 eyes) were included. The centration of the optical zone was evaluated on the instantaneous curvature difference map between the preoperative and 3-month postoperative scans using a superimposed set of concentric circles. The correlation between optical zone decentration and ant

Femtosecond laser-assisted LASIK versus PRK for high myopia: comparison of 18-month visual acuity and quality.

PURPOSE: To compare 18-month outcomes between femtosecond laser-assisted LASIK (femto-LASIK) and photorefractive keratectomy with mitomycin-C (PRK-MMC) for myopia of more than 7.0 D in terms of visual acuity and quality. METHODS: In this comparative nonrandomized clinical trial, 60 eyes from 30 patients (30 eyes in each group) were enrolled. Effects of altered corneal stiffness on native and postoperative LASIK corneal biomechanical behavior: A whole-eye finite element analysis.

PURPOSE: To investigate the impact of corneal elasticity on corneal shape changes before and after simulated LASIK with and without consideration of whole-eye biomechanics. METHODS: A finite element whole-eye model of a human eye was constructed. The cornea was modeled as hyperelastic and incompressible using experimental data representing a range of corneal stiffness. The corneal response to intraocular pressure loading and LASIK for 2.00, 4.00, and 6.00 diopters of spherical myopia was analyzed as a function of corneal stiffness and limbal boundary conditions. RESULTS: Myopic LASIK produce

Presbyopia treatment by monocular peripheral presbyLASIK.

PURPOSE: To investigate monocular peripheral presbyLASIK on the non-dominant eye with distance-directed monofocal refractive surgery on the dominant eye in treating presbyopia. METHODS: One hundred three patients underwent treatment with a VISX S4 system and follow-up from 1.1 to 3.9 years (mean 27.4 months). Average patient age was 53.3 years. Preoperative refraction ranged from -9.75 to +2.75 diopters (D). Non-dominant eyes underwent peripheral presbyLASlK--an aspheric, pupil-size dependent LASIK to induce central corneal relative flattening and peripheral corneal relative steepening. Domin

Corneal topographic and pachymetric screening of keratorefractive patients.

PURPOSE: To review the incidence of corneal abnormalities detected in the preoperative examination, using videokeratography and pachymetry that excluded patients from laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) or photorefractive keratectomy (PRK). METHODS: We conducted a chart review of consecutive patients who had a preoperative examination and were excluded from refractive surgery. RESULTS: Eighteen patients from 1,392 refractive candidates (1.3%) were designated as poor candidates for LASIK or PRK based on corneal topography and/or pachymetry. Thirteen patients (0.9%) were identified as having

PURPOSE: To evaluate the safety, efficacy, and contralateral eye comparison of topography-guided myopic LASIK with two different refraction treatment strategies. SETTING: Private clinical ophthalmology practice. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 100 eyes (50 patients) in consecutive cases of myopic topography-guided LASIK procedures with the same refractive platform (FS200 femtosecond and EX500 excimer lasers) were randomized for treatment as follows: one eye with the standard clinical refraction (group A) and the contralateral eye with the topographic astigmatic power and axis (topography-mo

Repeatability and reproducibility of a new method for centration analysis via optical zone tangent points after corneal refractive surgery.

PURPOSE: To investigate the repeatability and reproducibility of a new method for centration analysis after small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) and femtosecond laser-assisted LASIK (FS-LASIK). METHODS: This study comprised 29 eyes treated with SMILE and 24 with FS-LASIK. Decentrations were analyzed using tangential and pachymetry difference maps respectively. Both difference maps were generated with a Scheimpflug tomographer (Pentacam) for each eye, using preoperative and 3-month postoperative scans. Repeatability and reproducibility were evaluated by calculating the intraclass correl

Histological findings of corneal tissue after failed phototherapeutic keratectomy in macular corneal dystrophy - a case report.

BACKGROUND: Macular corneal dystrophy is a rare inherited disease of the cornea leading to deposits mainly in the stroma. Affected patients suffer from progressive loss of visual acuity which should be treated with penetrating keratoplasty. This is the first case report describing the clinical and histopathological findings of corneal tissue after failed phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK) in a patient with macular corneal dystrophy. CASE PRESENTATION: A 32-year-old man presented with visual impairment, blurred vision and increasing glare sensitivity in both eyes in 2014. All symptoms had exis
