BACKGROUND: We examine a 'lock and key' ('L-K') hypothesis to depression which posits that early adverse experiences establish locks that are activated by keys mirroring the earlier adverse experience to induce depression.
METHODS: Two-hundred and seventy clinically depressed patients were examined with open-ended and pre-coded interview questions to ascertain both early adverse experiences and precipitating life events. Qualitative and quantitative data analyses examined for any associations between developmental 'locks' and precipitating 'keys'.

Studies have consistently found that patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) are impaired on tests of anterograde memory, but the status of remote memory in MS remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: The assumed relationship between dissociation and symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) was examined.
METHOD: From a group of police officers who had experienced a traumatic event, the authors assessed the chronic dissociative symptoms of 42 police officers with PTSD, 50 police officers with partial PTSD, and 50 police officers who experienced no PTSD symptoms after the trauma.
RESULTS: Police officers with PTSD, as well as those with partial PTSD, exhibited significantly more dissociative symptoms than police officers without PTSD symptoms.
CONCLUSIONS: The study show

Among 43 women with panic disorder (38 with agoraphobia), 23 reported histories of childhood sexual abuse associated with high incidence of other early adverse experiences. A computer search of the literature for papers indexed under "flashbacks" produced a list of 70 references, many found in publications on the topics of substance abuse and trauma. An increased rate of pathological eating attitudes has been reported among the people under acculturative stresses. We therefore carried out a prospective study of eating patterns in a cohort of 144 Japanese adolescents who spent 1 year with a host family in various countries of the world. We examined for sex differences in possible risk factors for depression, manifestations of depression and associated help-seeking and coping styles in a socially homogeneous cohort without any sex difference in lifetime rates of depression. The importance of occupational environments in relation to the course of an atopic skin disease was investigated. A series of 1008 adult patients, who had had an atopic disease since their teenage years, were studied. In a 2 year study of life events and relapse in a cohort of 62 patients with bipolar affective disorder, an excess of events was found during the month immediately preceding relapse. Of 52 relapses 19% were preceded by a severe event in the previous month, compared to a background rate of 5% of patients experiencing a severe event each month at other times. The rate of life events prior to relapse was not apparently different between manic and depressive relapse, though the number of depressive episodes was small.

This paper examines the extent of physical and sexual abuse among runaway youths and the association of that abuse with behavior, mental health, life events, and parental mental health.
