Home visit patients and family with cleft lip and palate.

BACKGROUND: The operating process for cleft care, requires continuity of care involving a multidisciplinary team. When the patient goes to hospital to receive surgery, parents and family feel nervous about their children and need to know how to take care of their children afterwards. Some patients will have operations into their teenage years. The scar on their face will give them low self esteem and feelings of isolation. Patients and family need information and encouragement. Home visit should be a good process to convey information and encourage patients and family. OBJECTIVE: Of this proj

The incidence of cleft lip and palate in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Cleft lip and cleft palate are among the most common oro-facial anomalies. For various reasons, cleft lip and cleft palate patients have never been given priority by health planners in most African countries including Ethiopia. Lack of data about the incidence of this anomaly might have contributed to the poor understanding and care of these patients in our country. OBJECTIVE: The main objective of this study is to determine the incidence of cleft lip and palate in Addis Ababa. METHODS: This is a prospective survey carried out between September 1, 2004 and February 28, 2007. Seve…

Massive scapular metastasis as a presenting feature of carcinoma of the lip.

Carcinoma of the lip is a slow-growing locally-advanced disease with low metastatic potential. Distant skeletal metastasis is reported very rarely and the vertebral column is the most common site. A 58-year-old male smoker presented with pain and massive swelling of the left scapula for six months. He also noticed a slowly-growing painful ulcerated lesion on the outer aspect of the right lower lip for last two years. Biopsy from the lip ulcer, as well as cytologic smears from the scapular mass, revealed features of squamous cell carcinoma. Though no neck node was detected, patient was found to…

[The impact of cleft lip and palate on the parent-child relationships].

Cleft lips and palates (CLPs) are the most common human facial malformations. Depending on the ethnic and/or geographical origin of the studied populations, they can affect up to 1/500 newborns. The treatment of these patients is multidisciplinary because these malformations have not only aesthetic consequences but also functional consequences as the phonation, hearing, deglutition, mastication and ventilation are altered. These consequences can also be psychological since the building of the body image, the way others perceive it, is likely to be seriously altered. In Europe there are over 21…

A rare presentation of mucocele and irritation fibroma of the lower lip.

The effects of chronic local irritation have been seen commonly in the form of fibroma or mucocele in children. We report a nine year old girl with the chief complaint of multiple swellings in the lower lip which was diagnosed both clinically and histologically as fibroma and mucocele. Surgical excision was done under local anesthesia with no post-operative complications. To our knowledge there was no other occurrence, either at the same site or at different locations, involving these two lesions in the oral mucosa.

Treatment of salivary mucocele of the lower lip by OK-432.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper was to evaluate the outcome and complications of the treatment of patients with salivary mucocele by intralesional injection therapy with OK-432. METHODS: We tried OK-432 therapy in 20 patients with salivary mucocele. We injected OK-432 solution into the lesion with a 27-gauge needle to prevent any leakage of the agent from the mucocele. RESULTS: Disappearance of the lesion was observed in 16 of 20 patients. Marked reduction was observed in 4 of 20 patients. No local scarring or deformity of the lower lip occurred in any patients. As side effects, local disco…

Ocular findings in children with nonsyndromic cleft lip and palate.

The aim of this study was to evaluate ocular findings in children with nonsyndromic cleft lip and palate. Fifty-seven consecutive patients with cleft lip and/or palate seeking orthodontic treatment during 2006 were examined prospectively from an ophthalmological standpoint. Mean age of the patients was 9.2 years (range: 15 days to 18 years). Of the 57 children in total, five cases (8.7%) had cleft lip, six cases (10.5%) had isolated cleft palate and 46 cases (80.7%) had both cleft lip and palate. Thirty-seven of 46 cases with cleft lip and palate were unilateral and 20 were bilateral. Eleven o…

Dental development of Chinese children with cleft lip and palate.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the dental development and rate of tooth development between children with and without cleft lip and palate. PATIENTS: Age- and gender-matched pairs (231 in all) of southern Chinese children ages 3 to 12 years, with and without cleft lip and palate. METHODS: Dental histories and radiographs were studied. From these, dental development was determined. RESULTS: Of 2946 tooth pairs in the children with cleft lip and palate, 252 (8.6%) were found to be asymmetric, significantly (p < .001) more than the 63 of 3179 (2.0%) tooth pairs observed in the children without cleft li…

This clinicopathological entity describes patients with o … sometimes so insidious that signs and symptoms are frequently not severe enough to cause alarm. The lips are most commonly involved and demonstrate a nontender, persistent swelling. Utility of lip biopsy in the diagnosis and treatment of Sjogren's syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Sjogren's syndrome (SS) is an autoimmune disease involving primarily the salivary and lacrimal glands ("sicca" symptoms) with extraglandular features including joint and nervous system involvement. In patients with a questionable diagnosis of SS but severe extraglandular symptoms, a lip biopsy is often performed to firmly establish the diagnosis of SS. This study was undertaken to identify areas of uncertainty regarding the accuracy of biopsy interpretation and the diagnostic benefits of the procedure. STUDY DESIGN: : Retrospective review of clinical and pathologic data. METHODS: …

Defects of the nose, lip, and cheek: rebuilding the composite defect.

BACKGROUND: The face can be divided into regions (units) with characteristic skin quality, border outline, and three-dimensional contour. A defect may lie entirely within a single major unit or encompass several adjacent units, creating unique problems for repair. Composite defects overlap two or more facial units. Nasal defects often extend into the adjacent lip and cheek. The simplest solution may appear to be to simply "fill the hole"--just replace the missing bulk. Poor contour, incorrect dimension, malposition, asymmetry, poor blending into adjacent normal tissues, and a patch-like repair…

[State of the larynx in children with congenital cleft lip and palate].

Organic dysphonia was diagnosed in 27.4% of 215 children with congenital cleft lip and palate aged from 1.5 to 15 years. The above malformation was associated with such organic laryngeal diseases as edema, hypertrophy, nodules of the vocal cords and chronic laryngitis incidence of which directly correlates with duration and severity of the defect, age of the patient and time of reestablishment of the palatopharyngeal ring. After plastic repair of the oronasal defect, with age, laryngeal pathology gradually relieves.

Acinic cell carcinoma on the lower lip resembling a mucocele.

A 64-year-old woman presented with a 2-week history of an asymptomatic mass involving the lower lip. Histopathological examination showed a well-circumscribed tumour composed of many lobules separated by thin, fibrous connective tissue. Individual lobules were composed of round or polyhedral tumour cells, which had a characteristic finely granular and vacuolated cytoplasm and eccentric hyperchromatic nuclei. Positive staining was observed with Periodic acid-Shiff, and immunohistochemistry for cytokeratin, alpha-1 antitrypsin, and S-100 protein resulting in a final diagnosis of acinic cell carc…

[Orthodontic treatment of children with cleft lip and cleft palate].

Orthodontic treatment of children with cleft palates continues through the periods of the three dentitions: temporary, mixed, and adult. Using examples, this paper deals with the different difficulties that can be encountered during treatment of this malformation. Orthodontic interception at the time of the temporary dentition corrects the heart of the problem, the transverse insufficiency, but also addresses moderate maxillary retrusion. Cooperation with a speech therapist at this stage is essential. In the mixed dentition, orthodontists correct incisal malalignment and, depending upon the se

Parents' experiences of having a child with cleft lip and palate.

BACKGROUND: Giving birth to a child with cleft lip and palate (CLP) can be emotionally traumatic for parents. The facial appearance awakens feelings and reactions in the family and other people. Feeding these children in the neonatal period is known to be difficult. Previous research has mainly dealt with visual defects, feeding and speech problems. There is a lack of studies about parents' experiences of having a child with CLP. AIMS: This study was performed to investigate parents' experiences of having a child born with a cleft lip or CLP, and how they perceive encouragement and social and…
