Small cell lung cancer: Recruitment of macrophages by circulating tumor cells.

Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) play an important role in tumor progression, suppression of antitumor immunity and dissemination. Blood monocytes infiltrate the tumor region and are primed by local microenvironmental conditions to promote tumor growth and invasion. Although many of the interacting cytokines and factors are known for the tumor-macrophage interactions, the putative contribution of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) is not known so far. These specialized cells are characterized by increased mobility, ability to degrade the extracellular matrix (ECM) and to enter the blood stream

[Recent development in research and management of cancer anorexia-cachexia syndrome].

Cachexia is among the most debilitating and life-threatening aspects of cancer, and is more common in children and elderly patients. Associated with anorexia, fat and muscle tissue wasting, psychological distress, and a lower quality of life, cachexia arises from a complex interaction between the cancer and the host. This process results from a failure of the adaptive feeding response seen in simple starvation and includes cytokine production, release of lipid-mobilizing and proteolysis-inducing factors, and alterations in intermediary metabolism. Cytokines play a pivotal role in long-term inh

Subpopulations of high density lipoproteins in homozygous and heterozygous Tangier disease.

Tangier disease (TD) is characterized by severe high-density lipoproteins (HDL) deficiency, hypercatabolism of HDL constituents, impaired cellular cholesterol efflux, and mutations in the gene of ATP-binding cassette 1 (ABC-1). In the present study, we determined plasma lipid and apolipoprotein levels, and HDL subpopulations, in 110 subjects from a large TD kindred in which the proband was homozygous for an A-->C missense mutation at nucleotide 5338 of the ABC-1 transcript. In the proband HDL-C, apoA-I, and apoA-II concentrations were 2, 1, and 2 mg/dl, respectively, apoA-I was present only in

Determinants of suboptimal long-term secondary prevention of acute myocardial infarction: the structural interview method and physical examinations.

BACKGROUND: Secondary prevention after an acute myocardial infarction (AMI) reduces morbidity and mortality, but suboptimal secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease is common. Therefore, the present study aimed to identify potential underlying factors for suboptimal secondary prevention 2 years after an AMI event. METHODS: Patients aged 18-85 years at the time of their index AMI and hospitalized between July 2010 and December 2011, were identified retrospectively and consecutively from hospital discharge records. All patients who agreed to participate underwent a structured interview, p

Beyond phosphate uptake: PT4/PT11 as key functional components linking phosphate acquisition, nutrient exchange, and arbuscule maintenance in arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis.

Phosphorus is an essential macronutrient for plant growth and development, yet its availability in many soils is limited by strong chemical fixation and low mobility. Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) symbiosis provides an important biological strategy for improving plant phosphate acquisition by establishing specialized arbuscules within root cortical cells, where reciprocal nutrient exchange occurs across the periarbuscular membrane (PAM). Among the phosphate transporter families involved in this process, the mycorrhiza-specific PHT1 transporters PT4 in Medicago truncatula and PT11 in Oryza sativa

Multidrug resistance and lipopolysaccharide remodeling associated with mcr-1 acquisition in Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli.

The emergence of plasmid-mediated colistin resistance in Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) is an important public health concern because these strains can combine antimicrobial resistance with intestinal pathogenic potential. However, although mcr-harboring STEC has been reported from food-related sources, the phenotypic consequences of mcr-1 acquisition in STEC remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the prevalence of mcr variants and associated antimicrobial resistance determinants among 144 mcr-harboring STEC isolates and examined the phenotypic impact of mcr-1

Cancer cell-derived exosomal miR-425-3p induces white adipocyte atrophy.

White adipose tissue wasting plays a critical role in the development and progression of cancer cachexia. However, the mechanism behind the loss of adipose tissue remains ill-defined. In this study, we found that cancer cell-derived exosomes highly expressed miR-425-3p. Administration of cancer cell-derived exosomes significantly inhibited proliferation and differentiation of human preadipocytes-viscereal (HPA-v) cells. In mature adipocytes, cancer cell-derived exosomes activated cAMP/PKA signalling and lipophagy, leading to adipocyte lipolysis and browning of white adipocytes. These exosomes-

Engineering Strategies for Lymph Node Targeted Immune Activation.

Development of vaccine technology that induces long lasting and potent adaptive immune responses is of vital importance to combat emerging pathogens and to design the next generation of cancer immunotherapies. Advanced biomaterials such as nanoparticle carriers are intensively explored to increase the efficacy and safety of vaccines and immunotherapies, based on their intrinsic potential to focus the therapeutic payload onto the relevant immune cells and to limit systemic distribution. With adaptive immune responses being primarily initiated in lymph nodes, the potency of nanoparticle vaccines

Virus-Sized Gold Nanorods: Plasmonic Particles for Biology.

Plasmons, collective oscillations of conduction-band electrons in nanoscale metals, are well-known phenomena in colloidal gold and silver nanocrystals that produce brilliant visible colors in these materials that depend on the nanocrystal size and shape. Under illumination at or near the plasmon bands, gold and silver nanocrystals exhibit properties that enable fascinating biological applications: (i) the nanocrystals elastically scatter light, providing a straightforward way to image them in complex aqueous environments; (ii) the nanocrystals produce local electric fields that enable various

Time-dependent changes in lipid metabolism in mice with methionine choline deficiency-induced fatty liver disease.

Methionine and choline-deficient diet (MCD)-induced fatty liver is one of the best-studied animal models of fatty liver disease. The present study was performed to clarify the relative contributions of individual lipid metabolic pathways to the pathogenesis of MCD-induced fatty liver. Hepatic lipogenesis mediated by the sterol regulatory element-binding protein (SREBP-1c) was increased at 1 week, but not at 6 weeks, of MCD feeding. On the other hand, (14)C-palmitate oxidation did not change at 1 week, but significantly decreased at 6 weeks. This decrease was associated with increased expressio

Associations of parity with health disorders and blood metabolite concentrations in Holstein cows in different production systems.

Data were obtained from studies in Australia, Canada, and the United States using individual cow data from 28,230 Holstein cows to evaluate associations between parity and disease. Our goal was to develop understanding of disease risks for cows of differing parity. We hypothesized that there would be increased risks of disease and changes in metabolite concentrations with increased parity. Parity ≥5 represented 2,533 cows or 9.0%, parity 4 was 9.8% (2,778), parity 3 as 19.0% (5,355), parity 2 as 28.1% (7,925), and parity 1 was 34.1% (9,639) of the sample. Of these cows, 15.5% were in Australia

Central nervous system mechanisms contributing to the cachexia-anorexia syndrome.

The cachexia-anorexia syndrome occurs in chronic pathophysiologic processes including cancer, infection with human immunodeficiency virus, bacterial and parasitic diseases, inflammatory bowel disease, liver disease, obstructive pulmonary disease, cardiovascular disease, and rheumatoid arthritis. Cachexia makes an organism susceptible to secondary pathologies and can result in death. Cachexia-anorexia may result from pain, depression or anxiety, hypogeusia and hyposmia, taste and food aversions, chronic nausea, vomiting, early satiety, malfunction of the gastrointestinal system (delayed digesti

Effects of Individualized Follow-Up With an App Postcardiac Rehabilitation: Five-Year Follow-Up of a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Adherence to healthy behaviors initiated or adapted during cardiac rehabilitation (CR) remains a significant challenge, with few patients meeting guideline standards for secondary prevention. The use of mobile health (mHealth) interventions has been proposed as a potential solution to improve adherence to healthy behaviors after CR. In particular, app-based interventions have shown promise due to their ability to provide monitoring and feedback anytime and anywhere. Growing evidence supports the use of apps in post-CR settings to enhance adherence. In 2020, we demonstrated that ind
