IL-37 evaluation in chronic periodontitis after periodontal treatment with and without low level laser therapy.

BACKGROUND: Periodontal disease poses a significant global health challenge. Traditional treatments focus on reducing inflammation and bacterial load, yet novel approaches are continually being investigated. Recent research suggests that IL-37, a potent anti-inflammatory cytokine, may play a crucial role in modulating the inflammatory processes associated with periodontal disease. In conjunction with IL-37, low-level laser therapy (LLLT) has gained attention for its potential in promoting tissue repair, reducing inflammation, and enhancing cellular processes. This study aims to investigate the

Therapeutic Potentials of Near-Infrared II Photobiomodulation to Treat Cerebrovascular Diseases via Nitric Oxide Signalling.

Endothelial dysfunction featuring insufficient endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) and accompanying nitric oxide (NO) deficiency is implicated in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases. Restoring endothelial NO represents a promising approach to treating cerebrovascular diseases, including stroke. Low-power near-infrared (NIR) light shows diverse beneficial effects, broadly defined as photobiomodulation (PBM). The literature reports that PBM increases bioavailable NO. These lines of evidence indicate that PBM could be used to treat cerebrovascular diseases. Recent investigations reve

Direct Photobiomodulation Therapy on the Sciatic Nerve Significantly Attenuates Acute Nociceptive Sensitivity Without Affecting Motor Output.

OBJECTIVES: Pharmacologic pain treatments lack specific targeting and often produce unwanted side effects (eg, addiction, additional hyperalgesia). We previously established that the direct application of laser irradiation (direct photobiomodulation [PBM]) of the sural nerve reduces thermal hypersensitivity in a rodent model of chronic pain, but not mechanical hypersensitivity. These observations were consistent with a selective reduction in the small-diameter fiber contribution to electrophysiologically measured evoked response after direct PBM of a sensory nerve (saphenous). However, to our

Guidelines versus evidence: what we can learn from the Australian guideline for low-level laser therapy in knee osteoarthritis? A narrative review.

This narrative review analyses the Australian Guideline (2018) for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis (KOA) developed using Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) methodology. The Guideline recommended against the use low-level laser therapy (LLLT). Why this conclusion was reached is discussed in this review in the context of evidence provided in other systematic reviews, the latest of which was published in 2019 and which provided strong support for LLLT for knee OA. We evaluated the reference list cited for the recommendation "against" LLLT and compared

Effect of Low Intensity Laser Therapy (LILT) on MMP-9 expression in gingival crevicular fluid and rate of orthodontic tooth movement in patients undergoing canine retraction: A randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Low Intensity Laser Therapy (LILT) has been shown to increase the rate of tooth movement. Since its use in orthodontics as a method of acceleration there has been a variety of views regarding its mode of action. MMP-9 is a known bone resorption factor studied in Bone remodelling. The aim of this study was to know the effect of LILT on rate of tooth movement and expression of MMP-9 in GCF. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten patients (3 males and 7 females) who required maxillary first premolar extraction for routine orthodontic treatment were recruited. The individual canine retraction w

Effects of photobiomodulation therapy on the local experimental envenoming by Bothrops leucurus snake.

Bothrops leucurus is the major causative agent of snakebites in Brazil's Northeast. The systemic effects of its venom are effectively neutralized by antivenom therapy, preventing bitten patients' death. However, antivenom fails in neutralizing local effects that include intense pain, edema, bleeding, and myonecrosis. Such effects can lead to irreversible sequels, representing a clinically relevant issue for which there is no current effective treatment. Herein, the effects of photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) were tested in the local actions induced by B. leucurus venom (BLV) in mice (n = 123

Voigt-Futcher pigmentary demarcation lines.

Pigmentary demarcation lines (PDLs) are physiological abrupt transitions between hyperpigmented and lighter skin, a common and sometimes troubling feature of normal skin. They are seen in a majority of dark-complexioned women and a substantial percentage of light-complexioned ones too. We review this salient finding and approaches to its management.

The Efficacy of Pulsed Dye Laser Pretreated With or Without Local Anesthetic on Patients Presenting With Erythema of Face, Neck, Chest, and Extremities.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Erythema is one of the most common cosmetic concerns and usually responds well to pulsed dye laser (PDL) treatment. As this laser can cause significant discomfort, topical anesthesia is sometimes offered. However, it is still uncertain whether topical anesthetics can affect the outcome of the laser therapy. We performed a retrospective single site study to compare the efficacy of PDL for the treatment of erythema in patients with and without pretreatment with topical anesthetic. STUDY DESIGN/MATERIALS AND METHODS: A chart review was performed and patients who presen

Successful resolution of coats disease by photodynamic therapy: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Coats disease is a retinal disease characterized by exudative retinal detachment due to abnormal retinal blood vessels. Coats disease is generally treated using laser photocoagulation and cryotherapy to ablate the abnormal retinal blood vessels. However, if abnormal blood vessels are present near the posterior pole of the eye and there is a severe exudative change there, it is difficult to perform these standard treatments. We describe a case of Coats disease with severe exudative retinal change and retinal vascular abnormality near the posterior pole for which we performed photody

Effects of Photobiomodulation on Functionality in Wistar Rats with Sciatic Nerve Injury.

A peripheral nerve injury (PNI) can result in motor or sensory disorders. Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) has demonstrated positive results as a treatment option for PNI. Wistar rats were divided into five groups: Control, Injury, Injury + LLLTn (nerve), Injury + LLLTm (muscle) and Injury + LLLTn + m (nerve and muscle irradiation). The groups were analyzed after one, two, three and four weeks. PNI was achieved by crushing the sciatic nerve. Laser treatment (780 nm, 3.2 J) was realized over the nerve and/or tibialis anterior muscle. In gait analyses, the groups irradiated over the nerve demonstr
