Hepatitis B virus-associated intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma and hepatocellular carcinoma may hold common disease process for carcinogenesis.

AIMS: To evaluate potential risk factors for intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) and analyse clinicopathologic characteristics of ICC patients with seropositive hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg). METHODS: A retrospective case-control study was conducted. Cases were 317 ICC patients referred to the Eastern Hepatobiliary Surgery Hospital in China between 2003 and 2006. Controls were 634 healthy individuals. Adjusted odds ratios (ORs) were calculated in logistic regression analysis. Among 317 consecutively enrolled ICC patients, 154 patients were seropositive HBsAg (48.6%). We compared clini

Rescue of Angiopoietin-2 Inhibits Proliferation of Lymphatic Malformation Endothelial Cells.

Cystic lymphatic malformations (LMs) are congenital anomalies characterized by the formation of dilated lymphatic channels that can infiltrate adjacent structures and cause significant morbidity. Somatic activating single nucleotide variants in PIK3CA have been identified in the majority of these lesions, yet the precise mechanisms underlying the role of these variants in LM progression remain unclear. Here, we investigated the role of Angiopoietin-2 (Ang2) downregulation downstream of pathogenic PIK3CA variants in the pathogenesis of LMs and delineated a novel inhibitory mechanism for autocri

Chromosome 4q28.3q32.3 duplication in a patient with lymphatic malformations, craniosynostosis, and dysmorphic features.

The proband, now a 4-year-old female of mixed Caucasian and Japanese ancestry, was born at 29 weeks gestation via spontaneous vaginal delivery following a pregnancy complicated by fetal ascites, echogenic bowel, polyhydramnios, and incompetent cervix. The mother had no other pregnancy complications and had no recognized teratogen exposures throughout the pregnancy. Her length was 37 cm (37th centile), weight was 1.478 kg (80th centile), and occipitofrontal circumference (OFC) was 27 cm (20th centile). The family history was significant for maternal family members with pregnancy losses of unkno

Lymphatic system malformations in Noonan syndrome: Two case reports and imaging analysis.

L ymphedema is a well-known complication of Noonan syndrome (NS) but the lymphatic malformations in NS are poorly understood. We report clinical, genetic, and imaging information about a boy and girl with NS and late-onset lower extremity lymphedema. A de novo missense mutation of RIT1 (NM_006912.5) c.246T>A, p.Phe82Leu was identified in the girl, who also showed systemic lymphatic hyperplasia and dysfunction. Magnetic resonance lymphangiography (MRL) of the boy clearly demonstrated segmental dilated and hyperplastic lymphatics with impaired transport function in an affected limb and pelvic re

Outcomes, Challenges, and Pitfalls after Targeted Muscle Reinnervation in High-Level Amputees: Is It Worth the Effort?

BACKGROUND: Although the distal targets have been lost in proximal upper limb amputees, the neural signals for intuitive hand and arm function are still available and thus can be incorporated into more useful prosthetic function using targeted muscle reinnervation technique. In this article, the authors present their outcomes and range of indications in addition to experiences and pitfalls after 30 targeted muscle reinnervation cases at above-elbow and shoulder disarticulation level of amputation. METHODS: Thirty patients with above-elbow or shoulder disarticulation amputations were enrolled

Association Between Lymphatic Malformations of the Mediastinum and Congenital Venous Ectasia: Is It Just Coincidental?

The association between lymphatic malformations and congenital venous ectasia is extremely rare, and the relative rarity of both entities makes it difficult to determine the relationship between the two. Here we present four new cases and review the current literature. We hypothesize that there might be a strong association between mediastinal lymphatic malformations and segmental phlebectasia; furthermore, there is a molecular background that may justify the association between these two entities.

Sympathetic neuropathy and dysphagia following doxycycline sclerotherapy.

This case report demonstrates neurologic sequela following treatment with doxycycline sclerotherapy. A six-week-old child presented with respiratory distress from a macrocystic lymphatic malformation, extending from the skull base to the anterior mediastinum. Following doxycycline sclerotherapy, the airway symptoms resolved; however, the child developed silent aspiration and Horner's syndrome. Two months following treatment the patient resumed oral diet and at one year post-intervention there has been no recurrence of symptoms, with only mild ptosis remaining. While neuropathies following doxy

[Hereditary vascular malformations: classification, symptoms, diagnostics and prognosis].

The understanding of hereditary vascular anomalies was hampered for a long time by unclear und unspecific terminology. Today, the classification of the International Society for the Study of Vascular Anomalies (ISSVA) differentiates between vascular tumours (mostly infantile haemangioma) with active endothelial proliferation and regression and vascular malformations (VM), which are defects of the vascular morphogenesis and are distinguished in predominantly venous, arterial, capillary, lymphatic, arteriovenous or combined VM. Symptoms are pain, swelling and restricted movement, accompanied by

MRI for Response Assessment of Extensive Lymphatic Malformations in Children Treated With Sirolimus.

BACKGROUND. Extensive lymphatic malformations (LMs) may cause substantial morbidity. The mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) inhibitor sirolimus shows promise for treating vascular anomalies, although response assessment is not standardized. OBJECTIVE. The purpose of this study was to retrospectively characterize changes seen on MRI of children with extensive LMs treated with sirolimus. METHODS. Twenty-five children treated with sirolimus for extensive LMs were included. Baseline MRI was defined as the MRI examination performed closest to therapy initiation; follow-up MRI was defined as the m

Giant Lymphatic Malformations in Lower Extremity in an Adult: A Case Report.

Lymphatic malformations are benign vascular malformations rarely seen in adults. There have been only around 100 cases reported in the literature, most of them located in the head and neck area. The etiology is poorly understood but trauma, infection, or tumors have been suggested as possible causes. We present an unusual case of lymphatic malformations in the lower extremity of a 56-year-old male patient after minor trauma. The masses were asymptomatic but progressively enlarged for a period of 2 months, developing into a mass with a 21-cm-long axis in computed tomography images. Total surgic

[A Case of Esophageal Carcinoma with an Aberrant Right Subclavian Artery].

We report a rare case of esophageal carcinoma with an aberrant right subclavian artery. A 67-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital because of a sense of discomfort during swallowing. A detailed gastrointestinal examination revealed advanced carcinoma of the middle thoracic esophagus. Preoperative CT also revealed an aberrant right subclavian artery (AR SA). After the second course of neoadjuvant chemotherapy (FP therapy), we conducted a transthoracic esophagectomy with a 3-field lymphadenectomy. The right recurrent nerve was not identified at the right subclavian artery during mediastina

Characterization of congenital vascular malformation in the extremities using whole body blood pool scintigraphy and lymphscintigraphy.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical usefulness of combined whole body blood pool scintigraphy (WBBPS) and lymphscintigraphy (LS) in the characterization of patients with congenital vascular malformations (CVMs) of the extremities. Subjects included 134 patients who underwent Tc-99m RBC WBBPS and Tc-99m filtered tin colloid (or antimony sulfur colloid) LS on initial diagnosis. Scintigraphic results were interpreted as arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), venolymphatic malformations (VLMs), lymphatic malformations (LMs), and venous malformations (VMs). Final diagnosis of the

Faisalabad histiocytosis mimics Rosai-Dorfman disease: brothers with lymphadenopathy, intrauterine fractures, short stature, and sensorineural deafness.

Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD) is a rare, sporadic histiocytic disorder characterized by painless but protracted lymphadenopathy. Its etiology remains unclear. The observation of congenital disease and reports of familial cases with seven pairs of siblings including three sets of identical twins suggests a genetic predisposition in some patients with this condition. We now report two brothers of consanguineous Palestinian parents, whose lymphadenopathy, lymph node histology, and polyclonal hypergammaglobulinemia indicated RDD. The presence of intrauterine fractures, short stature, and sensorineur

The Adipovascular Unit in Lipedema: A Framework for Regional Adipose Tissue Dysregulation.

Lipedema is a chronic, predominantly female disorder characterized by disproportionate regional expansion of subcutaneous adipose tissue, pain, tenderness, and easy bruising. Reported abnormalities involve adipocytes, stromal/progenitor cells, microvascular and immune compartments, extracellular matrix (ECM), and, variably, lymphatic function, but their causal and temporal relationships remain unresolved. Here, we propose the adipovascular unit (AVU) as a systems-level framework that links these compartments within a spatially organized regenerative niche. The conceptual advance is not the ide

Multi-factorial considerations for intra-thoracic lymph node evaluations of healthy cats on computed tomographic images.

BACKGROUND: It is difficult to examine mild to moderate feline intra-thoracic lymphadenopathy via and thoracic radiography. Despite previous information from computed tomographic (CT) images of intra-thoracic lymph nodes, some factors from animals and CT setting were less elucidated. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effect of internal factors from animals and external factors from the CT procedure on the feasibility to detect the intra-thoracic lymph nodes. Twenty-four, client-owned, clinically healthy cats were categorized into three groups according to age. They underwent pre-

Multidetector CT for Evaluation of the Extrapleural Space.

The extrapleural space (EPS) is an anatomic space at the periphery of the chest that can be involved in a number of disease processes. This space lies between the inner surface of the ribs and the parietal pleura and contains adipose tissue, loose connective tissue, lymph nodes, vessels, endothoracic fascia, and the innermost intercostal muscle. It is often overlooked on cross-sectional imaging studies and almost invariably overlooked on conventional radiographic studies. At conventional radiography, the EPS occasionally can be seen when there is extrapleural fat proliferation, which might be
