Coordination during Cholera Outbreak Response: Critical Insights from Yemen.

Within the humanitarian arena and since the introduction of the humanitarian reform process in 2005, the cluster approach was introduced to strengthen the cooperation and accountability between agencies working in the same field. Such an integrated approach is particularly needed and relevant in emergencies like cholera, especially in countries undergoing internal conflicts like Yemen. Several areas of concern have been identified during the past field experiences, which include dysfunctional cooperation as a result of different mandates as well as the relationship between nongovernmental orga

Thyroid Fine-Needle Aspiration Cytology: Focusing on Adherence to Guidelines and Hospital Organization.

BACKGROUND The complications of fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) are rare but can be challenging for performing physicians to diagnose and manage. This type of procedure is perceived as routine and devoid of substantial risks, but uncommon complications can occur and need to be addressed with careful workup. CASE REPORT A FNAC procedure for a young female patient with multiple thyroid nodules was requested by her general practitioner. After the FNAC thyroid procedure, a carotid wall hematoma was suspected and could not be excluded with ultrasound (US) alone. Thus, the patient underwent a

Ventricular Fibrillation 7 Years After Left Ventricular Assist Device Implantation.

BACKGROUND Congestive heart failure (CHF) affects over 23 million individuals worldwide and over 5.8 million individuals in the United States. Left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation is used as both a bridging and destination therapy for patients with advanced CHF. LVADs are reported to cause ventricular arrhythmias. Ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation (VF) are common fatal arrhythmias in patients with severe CHF if left untreated. We report a case in which a patient with an LVAD without an implantable cardioverter device (ICD) developed VF with non-classical sympto

Burden of end-stage kidney disease: North Africa.

Geographical, ecological, and genetic factors result in many similarities among the six main countries of the African Sahara, including the epidemiology of kidney disease. With an average incidence of 182 and prevalence of 522 patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) per million population, North Africa (NA) spends $650 million on dialysis and transplantation despite an estimated annual loss of 600,000 life years. The health burden of ESKD is not limited to its directly-related morbidity and mortality but affects even more significantly other body systems, particularly the cardiovascular

Best Practice BioBanking of Human Heart Tissue.

This review provides a guide to researchers who wish to establish a biobank. It also gives practical advice to investigators seeking access to samples of healthy or diseased human hearts. We begin with a brief history of the Sydney Heart Bank (SHB) from when it began in 1989, including the pivotal role played by the late Victor Chang. We discuss our standard operating procedures for tissue collection which include cryopreservation and the quality assurance needed to maintain the long-term molecular and cellular integrity of the samples. The SHB now contains about 16,000 heart samples derived f

Exploring the Discussion of Risk of Sudden Cardiac Death.

Sudden arrhythmic death syndrome (SADS), where death is secondary to cardiac arrhythmia, is associated with several cardiac ion channelopathies, including long QT syndrome and Brugada syndrome, as well as cardiomyopathies such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and dilated cardiomyopathy. Many of these conditions often present in childhood or adolescence. This study investigates how diagnoses of cardiac diseases associated with SADS are communicated within families. A questionnaire was distributed through cardiac disease-focused support groups and organizations. Data from 114 parents who have a ch

A Spatiotemporal Database to Track Human Scrub Typhus Using the VectorMap Application.

Scrub typhus is a potentially fatal mite-borne febrile illness, primarily of the Asia-Pacific Rim. With an endemic area greater than 13 million km2 and millions of people at risk, scrub typhus remains an underreported, often misdiagnosed febrile illness. A comprehensive, updatable map of the true distribution of cases has been lacking, and therefore the true risk of disease within the very large endemic area remains unknown. The purpose of this study was to establish a database and map to track human scrub typhus. An online search using PubMed and the United States Armed Forces Pest Management

Geographical disparities and programmatic determinants of hydrocele surgery and lymphoedema management coverage for lymphatic filariasis in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, 2018-2024: A national analysis of routine programme data.

BACKGROUND: Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a significant neglected tropical disease in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Although progress has been made toward interrupting transmission through mass drug administration, LF-related morbidities-particularly hydrocele, lymphoedema, and recurrent acute dermatolymphangioadenitis-continue to cause substantial disability, comorbid infections, and reduced quality of life. National evidence on the burden of LF morbidities and factors associated with access to morbidity management remains limited. METHODS: We conducted a national retrospective

Pseudo-professional mechanism of collaborative mental health support in low-resource county-level contexts in China.

China has made school-family-community collaboration a central policy direction for adolescent mental health, yet low-resource counties often lack the professional workforce, stable interorganizational arrangements, and non-stigmatizing pathways needed to reproduce an institutionalized service model. Existing research on task sharing shows that trained non-specialists can perform selected forms of basic psychological support, but it says less about how such tasks are incorporated into everyday school relationships and linked to professional referral. This community case study examines Suining
