[Residual deficit of verbal recall after a left internal cerebral vein infarct].

A case of unilateral infarct in the territory of the left internal cerebral vein, severely disturbing cognitive processes, and more especially recall in verbal memory, is reported. This 22-year-old patient survived a left thalamic and striato-capsular infarct related to a straight sinus and left internal cerebral vein thrombosis. Motor and functional recovery was fair, despite late dystonia. At the secondary phase post-stroke, cognitive disorders were severe, including increased short-term forgetting and episodic (anterograde and retrograde) and semantic amnesia. One year later, a residual def

Priming effects in a letter-by-letter reader depend upon access to the word form system.

Several types of cognitive and neuropsychological evidence suggest that priming effects on such implicit memory tests as word identification are mediated by a pre-semantic visual word form system that can operate independently of episodic memory. We investigate priming in a letter-by-letter reader, P.T., whose pattern of performance on neuropsychological tests indicates preservation of the word form system. Experiment 1 revealed robust priming on a word identification test following letter-by-letter study of target words, despite P.T.'s great difficulty in identifying non-studied words. Experi

Benchmarking speech biomarkers of Alzheimer's against cognitive and neural measures.

INTRODUCTION: Digital speech biomarkers (DSBs) support the detection and monitoring of Alzheimer's disease (AD) in Latinos. However, they have not been benchmarked against standard cognitive and neuroimaging measures, missing a critical validation milestone. METHODS: Thirty-three AD patients and 33 healthy controls completed verbal fluency tasks, episodic memory and executive tests, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) (volume) and functional MRI (fMRI) (connectivity) scans. Between-group machine learning classification was compared among fluency-derived DSBs, episodic and executive test scor

Multimodal Contrastive Spatiotemporal Self-Organizing Neural Networks for In-Home Activity Learning of Mild Cognitive Impairment.

In-home spatiotemporal data, such as the movement trajectory data and the spatial time series data, contains potential predictive utility for detection of geriatric conditions including Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), frailty, and cognitive frailty. However, few have explored spatiotemporal learning models for learning and fusion of such disparate spatiotemporal data, owing to the lack of a generalized machine learning model that can jointly model these different spatiotemporal data types. This work reports a multimodal spatiotemporal machine learning model based on a class of self-organizing

Odor induced functional connectivity alteration of POC-anterior frontal cortex-medial temporal cortex in patients with mild cognitive impairment.

BACKGROUND: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is associated with an increased risk of dementia in older adults. Olfactory impairment may indicate prodromal dementia, yet its underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. This study aimed to investigate the alterations in functional connectivity (FC) of odor-induced olfactory neural circuits in MCI patients. METHODS: The study included 39 MCI patients and 42 normal controls (NCs). All subjects underwent cognitive assessments, olfactory behavior tests, and odor-based functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Differences in FC within olfactor

Lateralized processing of false memories and pseudoneglect in aging.

Aging is associated with higher propensity to false memories and decreased retrieval of previously studied items. When young adults (YA) perform on a lateralized version of the Deese-Roediger-McDermott (DRM) paradigm, the right cerebral hemisphere (RH) is more sensitive than the left (LH) to false memories, suggesting hemispheric imbalance in the cerebral mechanisms supporting semantic and episodic memory processes. Since cerebral asymmetries tend to be reduced with age, we surmised that behavioral asymmetries in the generation of false memories would be diminished with aging. To probe this hy

Reevaluating the role of education on cognitive decline and brain aging in longitudinal cohorts across 33 Western countries.

Why education is linked to higher cognitive function in aging is fiercely debated. Leading theories propose that education reduces brain decline in aging and enhances tolerance to brain pathology or that it does not affect cognitive decline but, rather, reflects higher early-life cognitive function. To test these theories, we analyzed 407,356 episodic memory scores from 170,795 participants older than 50 years, alongside 15,157 brain magnetic resonance imaging scans from 6,472 participants across 33 Western countries. More education was associated with better memory, larger intracranial volume

Self-reference promotes vocabulary learning in a foreign language.

Encoding information in reference to the self leads to improved memory, a phenomenon termed the self-reference effect. Learning vocabulary in a foreign language (L2) is a challenging memory task, because learning thousands of words is necessary to achieve listening and reading comprehension. The current study examined the efficacy of self-reference encoding for L2 vocabulary learning. In Experiment 1, native Hebrew speakers learned rare English words with a self-reference task and a control condition of translation repetition. In Experiment 2, participants learned with the same self-reference

Hippocampal CaMKII Regulates the Consolidation of Recognition Memory.

Object recognition memory (ORM) is a hippocampus-dependent form of memory essential for distinguishing items and constructing episodic representations of the past. Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII) is a serine/threonine-specific protein kinase highly enriched in the hippocampal formation, where it acts as a memory-relevant calcium effector. We found that, in rats, training in an ORM inducing learning task rapidly increased CaMKII autophosphorylation in the CA1 region of the dorsal hippocampus. Moreover, early post-acquisition intra-dorsal CA1 injection of the substrate-compe

Inbred Mice Again at Stake: How the Cognitive Profile of the Wild-Type Mouse Background Discloses Pathogenic Effects of APP Mutations.

Increasing efforts have been made in the last decades to increase the face validity of Alzheimer's disease (AD) mouse models. Main advancements have consisted in generating AD mutations closer to those identified in humans, enhancing genetic diversity of wild-type backgrounds, and choosing protocols much apt to reveal AD-like cognitive dysfunctions. Nevertheless, two aspects remain less considered: the cognitive specialization of inbred strains used as recipient backgrounds of mutations and the heuristic importance of studying destabilization of memory circuits in pre-symptomatic mice facing c

Using learning flexibly and remembering after a delay: understanding cognitive dysfunction in adults with Down syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Episodic memory deficits are a characteristic of cognitive dysfunction in people with Down syndrome (DS). However, less is known about the processes (i.e. encoding, retention or using learned information flexibly) that underlie these deficits. METHOD: We explored these abilities by administering a relational memory and inference task to participants with DS and mental age-matched controls and testing both immediately and after a 24-h delay. RESULTS: Adults with DS learned paired associates more slowly than controls but showed good recognition at both the immediate and delayed tes

Accessibility versus accuracy in retrieving spatial memory: evidence for suboptimal assumed headings.

Orientation dependence in spatial memory has often been interpreted in terms of accessibility: Object locations are encoded relative to a reference orientation that affords the most accurate access to spatial memory. An open question, however, is whether people naturally use this "preferred" orientation whenever recalling the space. We tested this question by asking participants to locate buildings on a familiar campus from various imagined locations, without specifying the heading to be assumed. We then used these pointing judgments to infer the approximate heading participants assumed at eac

Women have farther to fall: gender differences between normal elderly and Alzheimer's disease in verbal memory engender better detection of Alzheimer's disease in women.

We analyzed verbal episodic memory learning and recall using the Logical Memory (LM) subtest of the Wechsler Memory Scale-III to determine how gender differences in AD compare to those seen in normal elderly and whether or not these differences impact assessment of AD. We administered the LM to both an AD and a Control group, each comprised of 21 men and 21 women, and found a large drop in performance from normal elders to AD. Of interest was a gender interaction whereby the women's scores dropped 1.6 times more than the men's did. Control women on average outperformed Control men on every asp

Memory deficits in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis patients with dementia and degeneration of the perforant pathway A clinicopathological study.

Degeneration of the perforant pathway, not extensively surveyed so far in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) with dementia, was found in eight out of twelve autopsied patients with clinically detectable dementia. Because the severity of degeneration of the entorhinal cortex and that of spongiosis of the outer half of the molecular layer of the dentate gyrus were correlated in these eight patients, it is suspected that the degeneration of the perforant pathway may explain these concomitant lesions. This was further corroborated by occasional involvement of the parahippocampal white matter and

Further evidence of preserved priming and impaired recall in adults with Asperger's syndrome.

Two experiments compared incidental (implicit) and intentional (explicit) memory performance in adults with Asperger's syndrome and individually matched controls. Experiment 1 involved perceptual tests using word fragment cues, following study tasks in which the participants either generated the words from contextual cues or read the words alone, with no contextual cues. Experiment 2 involved conceptual tests using paired associate cues, following study tasks in which the paired associates were rated either for their relatedness or for their readability. Performance in both the incidental test

Task switching hurts memory in adults but not in children.

Switching between tasks impairs not only ongoing task performance (lower accuracy, slower responses for switch vs. repeat trials) but also for subsequent memory (poorer memory for stimuli on switch vs. repeat trials). This study examined developmental differences in memory switch costs in children (ages 7-13) and young adults (ages 19-31). Participants (N = 240) categorized trial-unique pictures of animals and objects using alternating size and animacy tasks. A subsequent incidental recognition test assessed memory for pictures from repeat and switch trials after a short filler task and again

Neural underpinnings of verbal memory encoding and recognition impairments in individuals with clinically stable mood or schizophrenia spectrum disorders.

BACKGROUND: Verbal memory impairment is prevalent in mood and schizophrenia spectrum disorders and contributes to poor functional outcomes. The neural correlates of these memory difficulties remain unclear due to a scarcity of neuroimaging studies assessing verbal memory and low ecological validity of current paradigms. The aim of this study was to examine neurocircuitry abnormalities across mood and schizophrenia spectrum disorders using a new verbal memory task simulating everyday grocery shopping. METHODS: Fifty-seven cognitively impaired individuals with clinically stable mood or schizoph

Apoe genotype knowledge and its impact on cognitive beliefs and performance.

As genetic testing for Alzheimer's disease (AD) risk becomes increasingly accessible, it is important to understand how individuals respond to knowledge of their genetic risk. In this study, we examined whether awareness of being an APOE ɛ4 carrier, a genetic risk factor for late-onset AD dementia, adversely affects subjective and objective cognition. Participants were 195 cognitively unimpaired older adults (aged 63-79, Mage = 71.18), recruited from the Alzheimer's Prevention Initiative's GeneMatch program. All had undergone APOE testing, with 94 ε4 carriers and 32 non-carriers aware of their

Evaluating Cross-Sectional Associations Between Cannabis Use and Prospective Memory in People with HIV.

Prospective memory (PM) deficits are common among people with HIV (PWH) and are linked to poor clinical outcomes. Risk factors for PM deficits in PWH are poorly understood. While cannabis use is associated with worse PM in people without HIV, it is unclear whether this association generalizes to PWH. Three hundred and seven PWH (79% with regular cannabis use) completed the Memory for Intentions Test (MIST). Associations between regular use (vs. no/minimal lifetime use) and MIST score were evaluated. Among participants with regular use, bivariate associations were evaluated between MIST score a

Amyloid-β and tau pathologies relate to distinctive brain dysconnectomics in preclinical autosomal-dominant Alzheimer's disease.

The human brain is composed of functional networks that have a modular topology, where brain regions are organized into communities that form internally dense (segregated) and externally sparse (integrated) subnetworks that underlie higher-order cognitive functioning. It is hypothesized that amyloid-β and tau pathology in preclinical Alzheimer’s disease (AD) spread through functional networks, disrupting neural communication that results in cognitive dysfunction. We used high-resolution (voxel-level) graph-based network analyses to test whether in vivo amyloid-β and tau burden was associated w
