Morphological architecture of the developing pancreas in quail embryos: A histological and ultrastructural perspective.

Organogenesis of the avian pancreas is a critical developmental process that ensures proper digestive and metabolic functions in birds. This study investigated the morphogenesis and ultrastructural differentiation of the quail pancreas. Fifty-eight quail embryos from day 5 to day 17 of incubation were used for this study. The developing pancreas consistently composed of exocrine and endocrine portions. On day 5, primitive pancreatic tubules (duct-like structures) appeared within the duodenal mesenchyme, lined with pseudostratified and simple columnar epithelium, and associated with early endoc

An aquaglyceroporin governs cellular water and CO2 conductance relevant for vesicular mineral formation in a marine calcifier.

Many marine organisms generate biominerals by endocytotic uptake of seawater which is modified within calcifying cells to produce an amorphous mineral precursor required to form the mineralized shell or skeleton. In this process, water must be removed from the endocytotic vesicles and the cell to promote concentration of calcification substrates and production of a water-free mineral. Here, we demonstrate that in the sea urchin larva, an aquaglyceroporin (spAQP9) is involved in the cellular calcification process. spAQP9 is found exclusively in the calcifying primary mesenchyme cells (PMCs), an

Expression of β-catenin and MSX1 proteins during parrot pseudoteeth and goose denticulations and giant filiform papillae's early development.

OBJECTIVE: To use immunohistochemistry to analyse the expression of MSX1 and β-catenin proteins during parrot pseudoteeth development and goose denticulations and giant filiform papillae ontogeny. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Eggs were purchased from stockbreeders. Embryos from selected stages were removed and sliced. Immunohistochemistry using anti-MSX1 and anti-β-catenin antibodies was performed and the results were compared with each other. RESULTS: For each protein, the staining predominated in the epithelial layer, with sparser labelling in the subjacent mesenchyme. Despite the unequal chronol

Unveiling Human Cardiac Fibroblast Membrane Proteome.

Cardiac fibroblasts (CFs) are one of the main cell populations in the heart and play important roles in tissue homeostasis and myocardial fibrosis. The study of these cells has been hampered by the lack of reliable membrane markers: none of the antigens currently used for characterization and isolation of CFs is unique for this cell type. This issue has also raised doubts regarding a distinct identity of cardiac fibroblasts when compared to other myocardium cell populations with similar morphologies. In this work, we report a comprehensive description and functional analysis of human CFs (hCFs

5α-Dihydrotestosterone negatively regulates cell proliferation of the periurethral ventral mesenchyme during urethral tube formation in the murine male genital tubercle.

Androgen is an essential factor involved in masculinization of external genitalia. Failure of the exposure to 5α-dihydrotestosterone (DHT) causes a hypoplastic penile size and urethral abnormality. The main pathology of hypospadias is defective urethral closure on the ventral side of the penis. Hormone-dependent genes are suggested as the causative factors. However, the detailed mechanisms of DHT functions on urethral tube formation remain unknown. Androgen is both a positive and negative regulator of cell proliferation. The roles of locally converted DHT in cell proliferation at the periureth

Rhabdomyomatous mesenchymal hamartoma of nasal vestibule.

Rhabdomyomatous mesenchymal hamartoma is a rare congenital tumor and usually occurring in the head and neck. Characteristically, this tumor is composed of various mesenchymal elements such as adipose tissue, blood vessels, collagen fibers, elastic fibers, and peripheral nerves in random orientation. We present a 7-year-old boy with an intranasal mass developed after the trauma and who had a diagnosis of rhabdomyomatous mesenchymal hamartoma.

Pathogenesis of joint destruction in rheumatoid arthritis.

Synovial mesenchymal cells, matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), and osteoclasts are the three major players directly responsible for the pathogenesis of rheumatoid joint destruction. First, synovial mesenchymal cells, internally driven by a transcription factor c-Fos/AP-1, not only directly invade cartilage and bone as a granulation tissue called "pannus" but also release inflammatory cytokine interleukin (IL)-1β. IL-1β induces MMPs and activates osteoclasts. Synovial cells can also present antigen to T cells to drive antigen-specific immune responses. Second, cartilaginous joint matrix can only

Fatal bilateral congenital mesenchymal hamartoma of the chest wall.

The authors reported a newborn female baby, 36 weeks gestational age, 2680 gms who developed respiratory distress at 2 hours after birth. Her chest roentgenograms showed a normal-sized heart, sparse lung markings and bilateral masses involving the posterior 6th to 8th ribs. Thoracotomy with partial removal of the left chest mass was performed when she was 12 hours age. Postoperatively, the baby developed progressive respiratory distress and expired at 29 hours-age. Autopsy revealed bilateral nodular masses arising from the inner side of the posterior aspect of the 6th to 8th ribs, measuring 6

Two unusual lesions in the nasal cavity of infants--a nasal chondromesenchymal hamartoma and an aneurysmal bone cyst like lesion. More closely related than we think?

Benign reparative lesions in the head and neck region in infants are rare and often difficult to classify on histology. Discussed herein are two rare lesions in infants occurring at identical locations in the nasal cavity with striking histologic similarity but different histologic labels. One was a case of nasal chondromesenchymal hamartoma (NCMH) occurring in a 1-year-old child and the other an aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) like lesion affecting a 4-month infant. Both these lesions were locally destructive and had nearly similar clinical presentation. Both on immunohistochemistry showed myofibr

Glycoconjugate distribution in early human notochord and axial mesenchyme.

Glycosylation patterns of cells and tissues give insights into spatially and temporally regulated developmental processes and can be detected histochemically using plant lectins with specific affinities for sugar moieties. The early development of the vertebral column in man is a process which has never been investigated by lectin histochemistry. Therefore, we studied binding of several lectins (AIA, Con A, GSA II, LFA, LTA, PNA, RCA I, SBA, SNA, WGA) in formaldehyde-fixed sections of the axial mesenchyme of 5 human embryos in Carnegie stages 12-15. During these developmental stages, an unsegm

New clues for the developing human biliary system at the porta hepatis.

The human biliary system is formed from the hepatic diverticulum, a structure which develops from the embryonic foregut in the fourth week of gestation. The cephalic portion of the hepatic diverticulum lies within the septum transversum, and gives rise to entodermal cells which become the primitive hepatocytes. The caudal part of the hepatic diverticulum is molded by mesenchyme to form the gallbladder, cystic duct, and extrahepatic bile duct. The gallbladder is initially tubular in shape, and undergoes morphological changes to become saccular during the 11th week of gestation. The extrahepatic

Fine needle aspiration cytology of mesenchymal hamartoma of the liver. A case report.

BACKGROUND: Mesenchymal hamartoma (MH) of the liver constitutes the third or fourth most common tumor of the liver in childhood and occurs most commonly in the first two years of life. MHs of the liver are seldom aspirated, and reports on the role of fine needle aspiration (FNA) in the diagnosis of MH are scarce. Clinically, cytologically and even histologically, MH can be mistaken for a number of reactive and neoplastic hepatic lesions that may occur in children under 2 years of age. CASE: A 10-month-old Pakistani female presented with a history of a right-sided, nonpainful abdominal swellin

[Congenital diaphragmatic hernia. I. Simple defect of the diaphragm or anomaly of the pulmonary mesenchyme?].

Described for the first time in 1848 by Bochdalek, congenital diaphragmatic hernia is still a hot topic. How can it be that a simple defect of the diaphragm still has a mortality rate reaching 50% in 1997, and this despite continuous progress in neonatal intensive care? If some problems remain unsolved, experimental studies over the past 30 years have raised some questions concerning the pathogenesis, and have shed some light into the pathophysiology of congenital diaphragmatic hernia. This article reviews the recent knowledge about the aetiology, pathogenesis and pathophysiology of this compl

Interdigital chondrogenesis and extra digit formation in the duck leg bud subjected to local ectoderm removal.

In the chick embryo the interdigital tissue in the stages previous to cell death exhibits in vitro a high chondrogenic potential, and forms extra digits when subjected in vivo to local ectodermal removal. In the present work we have analyzed the chondrogenic potential both in vivo and in vitro of the interdigital mesenchyme of the duck leg bud. As distinct from the chick, the interdigital mesenchyme of the duck leg bud exhibits a low degree of degeneration, resulting in the formation of webbed digits. Our results show that duck interdigital mesenchyme exhibits also a high chondrogenic potentia

The development and fate of the dental lamina of the mandibular first molar tooth in the rat.

The lamina of the first mandibular molar teeth of rats, age range 13 d intrauterine (i.u.) to 16 d postnatal (p.n.), was examined by light and transmission electron microscopy to establish histological baselines of its development and fate. All material was obtained from animals anaesthetised with ether, killed by cervical dislocation and prepared by routine methods for both types of examination. Contrary to earlier reports that the lamina remains intact throughout development, mesenchymal elements disrupt the lamina. These were seen first at 19 d i.u., as collagen-filled bays in the basal epi

Renewal and migration of rat incisor mesenchymal cells after doxorubicin administration.

Ten female rats were intravenously injected with doxorubicin (20 mg/kg) and divided into two equal groups receiving a dose of tritiated thymidine either simultaneously with doxorubicin or 1 h before being killed after 5 days. Six control animals were correspondingly injected with 3H-thymidine. The left and right maxillary incisors were prepared for histologic and microautoradiographic investigation, respectively. The distribution of labeled cells in animals injected 1 h before death showed the regions of proliferation, whereas migration from these regions was evaluated by longer observation ti

Distinct ossification trade-offs illuminate the shoulder girdle reconfiguration at the water-to-land transition.

The mechanisms of the pectoral girdle transformation at the origin of terrestrial locomotion in vertebrates remain an outstanding problem. The loss of intramembranous bones and the enlargement of endochondral bones resulted in the disarticulation of the pectoral girdle from the skull and the formation of the neck during the fish-to-tetrapod transition. Despite the functional implications of this skeletal shift in the emergence of terrestrial vertebrates, the underlying genetic-developmental alterations have remained enigmatic. Here, we show that in zebrafish pectoral girdle mesodermal cells ex…
