Female sexual dysfunction (FSD) is a multifactorial set of conditions associated with multiple anatomical, physiological, biological, medical and psychological factors that can have major impact on self-esteem, quality of life, mood and relationships. Studies indicate that FSD is commonly seen in women who report a low level of satisfaction with partner relationship and in women with male partners who have erectile dysfunction. This complexity of FSD is augmented by the presence of chronic disease. Negative sexual effects are widely reported in studies of women with chronic diseases (such as m

Extrapulmonary tuberculosis (TB), particularly when it involves the central nervous system (CNS), remains a significant clinical challenge. Cerebral tuberculoma, though rare, can present with complex symptoms that overlap with other neurological conditions, making timely diagnosis difficult. The condition demands a multidisciplinary approach for accurate diagnosis and effective management, especially in patients with multiple comorbidities. This report describes a complex case of pre-extensively drug-resistant TB affecting both the lungs and CNS in a 54-year-old immunocompromised male with AID

Giant condyloma acuminatum (GCA) or Buschke-Loewenstein tumor is a rare disease, with an estimated prevalence of 0.1%. It was initially described in 1896 by Buschke and later in 1925 by Buschke and Loewenstein. Classic condyloma acuminata (CCA) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) were initially described as different entities. These three entities are currently considered to correspond to the same spectrum of different but not exclusive malignant transformations, associated with multiple risk factors such infection by human papilloma virus (HPV), immunodeficiencies, poor hygiene, multiple sexual

The secrecy surrounding HIV continues to be a major concern for older people living with HIV (OPWH) despite their long-term experience of HIV and the presence of other chronic diseases. Our study aims to highlight how the secrecy surrounding HIV can affect the management of the other conditions. The results of this socio-anthropological sub-study of the ANRS EP66 SEPTAVIH study, which assesses frailty in OPWH, are based on in-depth interviews conducted with 20 OPWH with multimorbidities aged 70 years and over and 9 caregivers. Based on a cross-sectional thematic analysis, this study shows that

INTRODUCTION: Chronic autonomic disorders may complicate a wide range of conditions which can be divided into secondary, due to specific diseases, and primary, in which no cause has been determined.
CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 43-year-old woman, who presented a chronic autonomic failure, which had begun by symptomatic orthostatic hypotension. Progressively, syncopes became daily, causing considerable discomfort associated with other signs of sympathic dysfunction: unilateral Horner's syndrome, diarrhea and hypohidrosis. The autonomic involvement was confirmed by study of the cardiova

INTRODUCTION: A case is presented of a patient with severe and chronic pain in the orbital region, which was relieved by retrobulbar injection of absolute alcohol. The management of chronic pain in the orbital region has received little attention and the literature is reviewed.
CLINICAL PICTURE: A 52-year-old man with adenoid cystic carcinoma of the maxillary sinus was suffering from severe pain, especially in the left orbital region. There was also pain from ocular exposure and compression caused by the tumour. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed spread of tumour to both orbits, partic

OBJECTIVE: Multimorbidity, the coexistence of 2 or more chronic conditions, has been linked to cognitive aging and Alzheimer's disease (AD) and AD-related dementias, yet the mechanisms remain unclear. We aimed to examine the associations of multimorbidity with cognition and biomarkers across multiple mechanistic pathways.
METHODS: We cross-sectionally analyzed 3,808 dementia-free participants (mean age 64.9 ± 8.5 years, 62% female) from the Health and Aging Brain Study: Health Disparities. Multimorbidity burden was assessed using a latent construct derived from chronic conditions identified t

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Palliative care (PC) has traditionally focused on patients with cancer and their families. However, individuals living with advanced non-malignant chronic diseases and their caregivers face comparable challenges that significantly affect their quality of life. This study aimed to explore the PC needs of patients with advanced non-malignant chronic conditions through the lived experiences of both patients and their informal caregivers.
METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight patients and nine caregivers recruited via the Municipality of Katerini "He

Reverse transcription quantitative real-time PCR (RT-qPCR) is widely used to quantify gene expression, but its accuracy depends on appropriate normalization using stable reference genes (RGs). Because methamphetamine (METH) exposure induces widespread transcriptional changes, conventional housekeeping genes may not remain stable under these conditions. However, condition-specific RGs have not been systematically evaluated in METH-exposed nonhuman primate models. We evaluated transcriptome-derived candidate RGs together with four commonly used RGs (GAPDH, ACTB, RPS5, and YWHAZ) in blood and tis

BACKGROUND: It is important to evaluate sequalae for complex chronic health conditions such as endometriosis and mental health disorders. Endometriosis impacts 1 in 10 women. Mental health outcomes can be a primary determinant in many physical health conditions although this is an area not well researched particularly in women's health. This has been problematic for endometriosis patients in particular, who report mental health issues as well as other key comorbidities such as chronic pelvic pain and infertility. This could be partly due to the complexities associated with comprehensively expl

BACKGROUND: Health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in multiple endocrine neoplasia type-1 (MEN-1) is poorly described. HRQOL in MEN-1 was compared with other chronic conditions and the US general population.
METHODS: Adults aged ≥18 years recruited from an MEN-1 support group (n=153) completed the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) 29-item profile. MEN-1 scores were compared with PROMIS scores reported in peer-reviewed literature from back pain (n=218), cancer (n=310), congestive heart failure (CHF; n=60), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD; n=79), majo

BACKGROUND: Disease burden estimates rarely consider comorbidity. Using a recently developed methodology for integrating information about comorbidity into disease burden estimates, we examined the comparative burdens of nine mental and 10 chronic physical disorders in the National Comorbidity Survey Replication (NCS-R).
METHODS: Face-to-face interviews in a national household sample (n = 5,692) assessed associations of disorders with scores on a visual analog scale (VAS) of perceived health. Multiple regression analysis with interactions for comorbidity was used to estimate these association

Minimal-change colitis and microscopic colitis are clinicopathological terms for diarrhoea with normal endoscopic or barium enema findings. Some controversy about the exact definitions and terminology still exists. Some forms of minimal-change colitis may overlap with "self-limited" colitis (infectious colitis) or may be due to (surreptitious) use of laxatives or other drugs. In recent years it has become clear however that some genuine forms of chronic colitis can be diagnosed only by microscopic examination of multiple colonic biopsies while macroscopy is negative and hence can be called "mi

Background and objectives: Periodontitis is a multifactorial chronic inflammatory infectious disease in which an infection is necessary, but not sufficient, for development of the condition. Individual susceptibility strictly linked to the immune and inflammatory response of the organism must also be present. Low-grade inflammation (LGI) is a systemic status of chronic sub-clinical production of inflammatory factors. This condition represents a risk factor for many chronic diseases including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cerebrovascular disease, neurodegenerative disease and cancer. This s

BACKGROUND: To examine whether the associations between periodontitis and multiple systemic conditions increase with increasing severity of periodontitis using a multi-center electronic health record (EHR) repository.
METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using EHR data from 9 dental schools in the United States. We included 264,913 adults (≥18 years) receiving periodontal therapy between 2013 and 2023. Periodontitis severity (no, mild/moderate, severe) was determined, and out of 98 systemic and behavioural conditions, associations with 24 conditions were evaluated using weighted

Pancreatic panniculitis is an inflammation of subcutaneous adipose tissue associated with acute or chronic pancreatic diseases. Two-year-old girl presented with pain abdomen, fever, and multiple tender erythematous nodules over legs, abdomen and back for 1 week. Computed tomography scan suggestive of acute necrotizing pancreatitis. Skin biopsy revealed typical features of septal panniculitis. The child improved with supportive treatment with regression of skin nodules. Although rare, physicians must be aware of this condition closely mimicking vasculitis to avoid delay in diagnosis.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a retrovirus which became pandemic in the early 1980s. Since its initial characterization, advancements in diagnosis and management have transformed HIV infection from a terminal diagnosis to a chronic, manageable condition. Effective antiretroviral therapy, acting at multiple steps in the viral lifecycle, durably suppresses viral replication, preserves maternal health and prevents mother to child HIV transmission. Here, we review the salient clinical and ethical considerations of managing HIV infection during pregnancy and delivery.

Lichen nitidus (LN) is a chronic inflammatory condition characterised by multiple asymptomatic shiny, flat-topped, pale to skin-coloured tiny papules. LN occurs most often in children and young adults with limbs, abdomen, chest, and penile shaft as common sites of predilection. Nail involvement is rare and includes irregular longitudinal grooving and ridging of the nail plate. We report two cases of generalised LN with nail dystrophy in 8- and 12-year-old boys along with the treatment response and review the pertinent literature.

Extramammary Paget's disease (EMPD) is a rare malignant disorder of the skin, which was described in as early as the nineteenth century. EMPD usually occurs as a single lesion in the apocrine sweat gland-bearing skin with abundant hair follicles. Here, we present an elderly man who suffered from a non-resolving chronic genital pruritus for 8 months. Initially, he was managed for recurrent fungal infection and eczema. Later, a diagnosis of the rare condition multiple primary EMPD was made based on the histopathology findings and appropriate treatment was given.
