Eosinophilic fasciitis characterized by symmetrical limbs' edema, myalgia, erythema, and progressive cutaneous and subcutaneous induration. Peripheral eosinophilia and hypergammaglobulinaemia are the most characteristic features of the disease. Histopathological examination shows fibrosis of fascia and deep layers of subcutaneous tissue with inflammatory infiltrates of eosinophiles, lymphocytes, histiocytes, and plasmocytes. The involvement of the organs occurs rarely in the course of the disease. The clinical case of eosinophilic fasciitis in a 78-year-old female patient was described.

We have experienced two cases of drug-induced lupus erythematosus caused by ticlopidine in the last three years. Both were late-onset cases (1 and 4 years) that occurred in elderly men (76 and 81 years old). The common features were fever, arthralgia, myalgia, serositis, and the presence of anti-histone autoantibodies. Because ticlopidine is widely used in elderly people with ischemic vascular disease, ticlopidine-induced lupus should be considered when patients taking ticlopidine present lupus-like symptoms.

We report the first case of myositis and rhabdomyolysis after infection with novel influenza A (H1N1/09) virus. The case demonstrates the novel virus' capacity for causing significant disease. Myositis and the possibility of rhabdomyolysis should be considered in any individual presenting with influenza-like symptoms in which severe myalgia or muscle weakness is apparent. It is likely that we will see severe clinical manifestations of infection with this novel influenza virus in the coming respiratory virus season.

Tumor necrosis factor receptor associated periodic syndrome (TRAPS) is an autosomic-dominant periodic syndrome associated with mutations in the extracellular domain of the 55 kDa TNF receptor. Clinically, episodes of severe myalgia, arthralgia/arthritis, sterile peritonitis, scrotal inflammation, serositis, migratory rash, conjunctivitis, and recurrent fever are characteristic. We describe a 9-year-old African American boy with the P46L mutation of the TNF receptor who presented with 2 previously unrecognized manifestations: sacroiliitis and myocardiopathy, both showing a reversible course.

Cysticercosis, the infestation with the encysted larval stage of Taenia solium, is increasingly recognized as a major problem in most countries in Latin America, Asia, and Africa, involving mainly the central nervous system. Muscle involvement is also common, although it usually remains asymptomatic. We describe a case of disseminated muscular cysticercosis followed by myositis (fever, diffuse myalgia, weakness of the lower limbs, and inflammatory reaction around dying cysticerci) induced by praziquantel therapy, an event not described previously.

We report three cases of patients who complained of myalgia showing histological features similar to tubular aggregates in their muscle biopsies. All had an elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate without any evidence of infectious or autoimmune disease. On electron microscopy, small areas of myofibrillar degeneration, selectively in type II fibres, were found in all patients, but no tubular aggregates were seen. Although the pathogenesis of these lesions is unclear, it does seem that this condition is acquired and transient.

A 22-year-old familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) patient was hospitalized for continuous fever, myalgia, hypertension, vertigo and a petechial rash. Laboratory findings revealed hyperglobulinaemia, thrombocytosis and a leukaemoid reaction. While on steroid therapy the patient sustained a haemorrhage into a renal aneurysm which responded to gel foam embolization. After 12 months of follow-up his condition remained stable under treatment with cyclophosphamide, prednisone and antihypertensive medications. This case provides the fourth example of polyarteritis nodosa associated with FMF.

Corticosteroids have multiple uses in the care of the cancer patient. Although they confer benefit to the patient, high doses and extended duration of use may lead to significant adverse effects. Adverse effects such as osteoporosis-induced fractures, osteonecrosis, myopathy and myalgias can cause significant pain and have a negative impact on the patient's quality of life. In this paper, I will review the mechanisms involved in the toxicity, risk factors, prevalence, prevention, and treatment strategies.

An adult patient experienced attacks of severe low back pain and sciatic neuralgia for several years, sometimes associated with myalgias, skin lesions, and high fever. Specific inflammatory laboratory tests were the major abnormalities. P46L mutation in the gene on chromosome 12p13 that encodes tumor necrosis factor receptor superfamily 1A (TNFRSF1A) was found. Management with anti-TNF agent was effective with a complete remission of bouts of pain and fever.
