INTRODUCTION: Nail toxicity is a relatively uncommon cutaneous adverse effect of chemotherapeutic agents. Rapidly dividing cells of the nail matrix are perturbed by the antimitotic activity of these agents. Although most of these changes are cosmetic and regress once the therapy is completed, a few of these adverse effects are challenging to manage and require temporary or permanent suspension of chemotherapeutic agents.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 205 patients with various malignancies and under chemotherapy in oncology ward of the hospital over a period of 3 months were screened for n

Sézary syndrome (SS) is the leukemic form of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL) and can be associated with various nail irregularities, though they are infrequently reported. In this retrospective study, we reviewed medical records from a CTCL clinic database at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center (Houston, Texas) for reported nail abnormalities in patients with a diagnosis of SS. Findings for 2 select cases are described in more detail and are compared to prior case reports to establish a comprehensive list of nail irregularities that have been associated with SS.

The nail plate is a layer of keratin that protects the back of the ends of the fingers and toes. It is a system with many important function … tant aesthetic and functional sequelae. These can be very complex even to correct later (dystrophic nails, decrease in discrimination between 2 points…). The 2 most common lesions are subungual haematoma and subungual avulsion, with their different degrees of adjacent bone involvement.

Intramedullary nailing was originally conceived for the stabilization of shaft fractures of long bones. Due to new nail designs and multiple interlocking possibilities, the spectrum of nailing has significantly increased. Nailing of fractures beyond the isthmus is technically challenging because fractures need to be reduced before the nailing procedure starts. Indirect techniques of reduction include the use of an extension table, a large distractor or an external fixator. Direct reduction with pointed reduction forceps, lag screws, a cerclage wire or a short plate can optimize indirect reduct

Nail unit is a complex skin appendage offering natural barrier to drug penetration by virtue of its unique anatomy. This is the reason why topical as well as oral therapies can be largely ineffective when dealing with nail diseases. Intralesional (injectable therapies) offer a practical solution in this scenario. This review aims to summarise the role of different injectable drugs in various nail unit disorders. Various types of intralesional therapies in the nail unit, their techniques of administration, appropriate drugs to be used and optimum treatment protocols are summarised.

Intramedullary nailing of subtrochanteric femur fractures may be a challenge because of the deforming muscle forces on the proximal fragment; the inability to attain an ideal starting point or fracture reduction; and the high risk for nonunion, malunion, and hardware failure as a result of the great amount of stress present in the subtrochanteric region of the femur. Surgeons should understand the surgical technique for and the outcomes of intramedullary nailing of subtrochanteric femur fractures. A proper starting point, maintenance of reduction during reaming, and careful consideration of fe

Key factors for successful osteosynthetic fracture stabilization are anatomical fracture reduction, restoration of axis and torsion alignment as well as tissue-preserving operative techniques. In long bone fractures, the use of intramedullary long bridging nailing offers ideal conditions for bone healing, as axial and rotational stability is provided by canal-filling nails and locking screws. In addition, the tissue in the fracture region is protected as the intramedullary nail insertion is distant from the fracture. The indication spectrum for modern intramedullary locked nailing includes dia…

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the nail apparatus is a rare malignant tumor that usually originates underneath the nail plate and grows slowly with possible bone invasion. The etiology remains unknown, although a strong association with different conditions, such as high-risk human papillomavirus (HPVs), trauma, or radiation exposure has been demonstrated. Nail SCC is called "the great mimicker nail tumor" because different clinical presentations may coexist, resembling benign or malignant nail lesions. For this reason, there is often a significant delay between the onset of nail SCC and the

BACKGROUND: Mycosis fungoides (MF) has a wide range of clinical presentations and it has been reported rarely to involve the nail apparatus.
OBJECTIVE: We intended to evaluate the frequency and characteristics of nail changes in patients with biopsy-proven MF.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 60 patients with MF who were evaluated at our cancer center from 2013 to 2014 was performed to identify patients with nail changes. Histological examinations of the skin around the nail apparatus were obtained from 10 patients with periungual skin erythema and scaling.
RESULTS: In 45 patients out o

This article highlights pearls shared during a unique and enlightening lecture by Antonella Tosti, MD, a professor at the University of Miami Health System, Florida, on the presentation and management of common pediatric nail diseases. These clinical pearls are shared to help deliver utmost care to our pediatric patients presenting with nail pathology and may help shed light on the management of pediatric nail diseases.

The nail apparatus is an integral part of the functional unit of the digital tip. Although overall uncommon, all cells and tissues occurring in this area can give rise to neoplastic lesions. Given the special anatomical location, such tumors frequently show morphological and symptom-related differences compared to similar lesions located elsewhere on the skin. Though particularly threatening, there is often a substantial delay in the diagnosis of Bowen's disease, ungual squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Nevertheless, local excision with sufficient surgical margins is usually sufficient an
