A patient with basal-cell epithelioma occurring in a smallpox vaccination site is reported. The association is probably not a chance occurrence.

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) with matrical differentiation is an extremely rare subtype of basal cell carcinoma. We present an example of BCC with matrical differentiation and review the relevant literature. A 75-year-old man presented with a rapidly enlarging nodule on his forehead, with the clinical diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma. Given atypical matrical proliferation on initial biopsy, there was concern for pilomatrix carcinoma. However, a repeat biopsy confirmed a diagnosis of BCC with matrical differentiation. Immunohistochemically, the BCC lobules expressed BCL2 and BER-EP4, while th

Reflectance confocal microscopy is currently the most promising noninvasive diagnostic tool for studying cutaneous structures between the stratum corneum and the superficial reticular dermis. This tool gives real-time images parallel to the skin surface; the microscopic resolution is similar to that of conventional histology. Numerous studies have identified the main confocal features of various inflammatory skin diseases and tumors, demonstrating the good correlation of these features with certain dermatoscopic patterns and histologic findings. Confocal patterns and diagnostic algorithms have

All the consultants agree that, given this patient's history, a common skin tumor like squamous cell or basal cell carcinoma is unlikely. Melanoma or Merkel cell carcinoma belong in the differential. Interestingly, the consultants all suggest a biopsy of the lesion prior to other testing, and because this tumor is so accessible, a biopsy should not interfere with further testing or treatment. Drs. Weymuller and Marks would then proceed with a CT scan; Dr. Ridge favors an MRI scan. While a chest-ray is in order to rule out metastases, Dr. Weymuller also suggests immunocytochemistry. All the exp

The quantitative distribution of Langerhans cells (LC) was studied in a range of pre-neoplastic, in-situ and invasive neoplastic skin lesions using an antibody to S100 protein and the indirect immunoperoxidase technique. LC numbers were increased within the lesions of actinic keratosis, Bowen's disease, keratoacanthoma, squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma. In all lesions except actinic keratosis the LC density was also significantly increased in the adjacent non-neoplastic epithelium. The increased LC density in neoplastic epithelium suggests either that LC are being retained with

Pediatric cutaneous malignancies are rare but form distinct clinical and molecular biological subgroups from adult skin cancers. This review focuses on major diseases of childhood and adolescence-malignant melanoma, basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP)-outlining their epidemiology, clinical features, molecular drivers, and treatment strategies. Pediatric malignant melanoma is primarily classified into adult-like tumors with BRAF/NRAS mutations, Spitz melanoma arising from kinase fusion genes, and congenital nevi with NRAS mutatio

With the rising incidence of basal cell carcinoma, postoperative deformities following Mohs surgery have become increasingly prevalent. Among these, alar retraction represents a particularly challenging complication. Current approaches to its correction have largely centered on grafting techniques, which are often complex and may necessitate multidisciplinary collaboration. External V-Y plasty, by facilitating soft tissue lengthening and tension release, presents a straightforward and effective alternatives for correcting alar retraction, offering favorable aesthetic outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Surgical excision of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) in aesthetic facial regions (e.g., nasal, periocular) risks disfiguring scars and functional deficits, particularly for elderly patients with surgical contraindications or extensive lesions where complete tumor clearance proves challenging. Conventional approaches often carry significant perioperative burdens for this demographic.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical efficacy and aesthetic outcomes of photodynamic therapy (PDT) as a non-surgical alternative for BCC in cosmetically critical facial areas.
METHODS: This case series anal

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) of the sun-protected genital region is rare. We examined all penoscrotal BCC at a single institution over an 18-year period. A total of 7 cases were identified, 5 scrotal and 2 penile. Four cases (57%) were treated with Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) and 3 cases (43%) with conventional excision. A prior retrospective review of vulvar BCC at our institution during the same time period showed that MMS was utilized in 4 (11%) of 35 cases. Functional preservation is vital when performing surgery on the genitals and tissue-sparing MMS provides optimal tumor clearance and

OBJECTIVES: Diagnosis of metastatic basal cell carcinoma (BCC) remains challenging, in part due to its rarity. With the advent of molecularly targeted therapies, recognition of this entity is more important than ever.
METHODS: We identified 11 cases of metastatic BCC over a 13-year period. We analyzed these tumors in conjunction with their respective primary tumors by histomorphologic, immunohistochemical, and molecular genetic analyses.
RESULTS: We identified three morphologic patterns of metastasis in BCC. The most common (seven cases) was characterized by completely typical features of BC
