Relationship between hemispheric cerebral blood flow, central conduction time, and clinical grade in aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage.

The relationship between central conduction time (CCT) and hemispheric cerebral blood flow (CBF) has been examined in 20 patients presenting with subarachnoid hemorrhage. A total of 63 combined CCT/CBF recordings were performed at various times throughout the hospital course of these patients, and the findings were correlated to clinical status. The initial-slope index of the CBF (CBF isi) was found to correlate well with clinical grade, and a gradation in flow was noted between the different neurological grades. Patients in Grades I and II (Hunt and Hess classification) had the highest flows

Spinal evoked potential in man: a maturational study.

Summated evoked potentials to peroneal nerve stimulation which arise in the cauda equina and spinal cord afferent pathways were recorded from surface electrodes placed over the spine of 95 infants, children and adults. The conduction velocity of these potentials from lumbar to cervical recording sites was calculated. Additionally, segmental conduction velocities over peroneal nerve, caudal and rostral spinal cord were determined. In all age groups the speed of conduction up the spine was non-linear. It was slower over caudal spinal cord segments than over peripheral nerve or rostral cord. All

[Postoperative palsies of the common peroneal nerve and the tibial nerve associated with lateral position].

A 36-year-old woman with systemic lupus erythematous secondary to diabetes underwent right total hip arthroplasty in the left lateral position. An epidural catheter was inserted at the L1-2 interspace and placed cephalad prior to induction of general anesthesia. After the operation, she complained of numbness on the dorsum and plantar of the left foot and was unable to dorsiflex and plantarflex the ankle. The symptoms persisted after discontinuation of the epidural infusion of a local anesthetic, and they became exacerbated after the second operation in the left lateral position. Electromyogra

Familial spastic paraplegia, peroneal neuropathy, and crural hypopigmentation: a new neurocutaneous syndrome.

A neurocutaneous syndrome is described in which spastic paraplegia, peroneal neuropathy, and crural hypopigmentation are inherited in a dominant pattern. Spastic paraplegia becomes clinically apparent during adolescence or in childhood and progresses slowly throughout the adult years with a variability in severity of expression. Peroneal neuropathy is documented clinically and by slowing on nerve conduction studies. Pattern-reversal visual evoked potentials also yield a delayed response, but brainstem auditory evoked potentials and somatosensory evoked potentials in upper and lower extremities

Electrocardiographic findings in newborns with bicuspid aortic valve.

BACKGROUND: Bicuspid aortic valve is considered to have a multifactorial origin. Some research suggests a defect in neural crest cell signalling may increase the risk of developing bicuspid aortic valve, and also impact on the proximal conduction system. PURPOSE: To examine electrocardiographic parameters in unselected newborns from the general population diagnosed with bicuspid aortic valve within 30 days after birth. METHODS: This is a substudy of the Copenhagen Baby Heart Study; a multicentre, prospective, population-based cohort study with prenatal inclusion. Cardiac examination, includi

Cytokine therapy-mediated neuroprotection in a Friedreich's ataxia mouse model.

OBJECTIVES: Friedreich's ataxia is a devastating neurological disease currently lacking any proven treatment. We studied the neuroprotective effects of the cytokines, granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) and stem cell factor (SCF) in a humanized murine model of Friedreich's ataxia. METHODS: Mice received monthly subcutaneous infusions of cytokines while also being assessed at monthly time points using an extensive range of behavioral motor performance tests. After 6 months of treatment, neurophysiological evaluation of both sensory and motor nerve conduction was performed. Subsequent

Regional hypothermia protects against tourniquet neuropathy.

Ischaemic nerve injury has been suggested as the mechanism for post-tourniquet limb paralysis. As hypothermia has been shown to prolong ischaemia time in many tissues, we tested the hypothesis that cold protection would reduce tourniquet induced neural injury. In 16 male Wistar rats a tourniquet was applied to the right hind limb for 3 h. In eight rats both hind limbs were maintained at room temperature (27 degrees C) while the limb temperature was decreased to 4 degrees C by application of cold polyglycol gel packs in the remaining eight animals. Motor nerve conduction velocity (MNCV) and the

Human neural stem cells induce functional myelination in mice with severe dysmyelination.

Shiverer-immunodeficient (Shi-id) mice demonstrate defective myelination in the central nervous system (CNS) and significant ataxia by 2 to 3 weeks of life. Expanded, banked human neural stem cells (HuCNS-SCs) were transplanted into three sites in the brains of neonatal or juvenile Shi-id mice, which were asymptomatic or showed advanced hypomyelination, respectively. In both groups of mice, HuCNS-SCs engrafted and underwent preferential differentiation into oligodendrocytes. These oligodendrocytes generated compact myelin with normalized nodal organization, ultrastructure, and axon conduction

Artificial perineurium to enhance nerve recovery from damage after neurolysis.

We have developed a novel biodegradable poly-lactide (PLA) film (honeycomb film) with a micropatterned porous structure on one side. We hypothesized that this film could be used as a substitute for perineurium. We used two types of thin PLA film: honeycomb film and cast film with smooth surfaces on both sides. In a rat extensive internal neurolysis model, the nerve was wrapped with honeycomb film (group H) or cast film (group CA), or left unwrapped (group C). Histological and functional analyses were performed. The honeycomb film closely attached to the nerve surface but did not adhere to surr

Development, structure and function of the upper airways.

The upper airways play an essential role in the conduction of air into the lungs, and influence the properties of the inhaled air by both the anatomical structure and the functional properties of the mucosa, cartilages and neural and lymphatic tissues. The upper airways also play an important role in the protection of the lower airways, in the formation of the sound and host the sense of olfaction. Main events in the development of the upper airways happen during early embryonic periods. Postnatally, the growth of the airways follows the growth of the skeleton of the head and of the neck and t

New frontiers in molecular pediatric cardiology.

Numerous advances in understanding the molecular basis of congenital heart disease have been published in the past year. Highlights are reviewed, focusing on two major topics: genetic syndromes and cardiac organogenesis. Genetic syndromes are discussed in the context of complementary data from targeted mutations in animals and genetic mapping studies in humans. These include the DiGeorge, Holt-Oram, Alagille, familial primary pulmonary hypertension, and Noonan syndromes. Novel concepts in cardiac organogenesis are discussed, including the existence and contribution of an anterior heart field t

Abnormal response from the sternocleidomastoid muscle in patients with spasmodic torticollis: observations during microvascular decompression operations.

Electromyographic (EMG) recordings from patients undergoing microvascular decompression (MVD) operations to relieve spasmodic torticollis were studied. When EMG potentials were recorded from the sternocleidomastoid muscle in response to electrical stimulation of the spinal accessory nerve (SAN) at the neck, an abnormal (delayed) response was seen in 9 of 12 patients who had unilateral symptoms. In 5 patients with bilateral symptoms, no such delayed response was seen. We assume that this abnormal muscle response depends on an abnormal cross-transmission. Neural conduction time measurements, usi…

The multicellular environment of the re-entrant circuit in post-myocardial infarction ventricular tachycardia: Beyond fibrosis.

Ventricular tachycardia (VT) in the post-myocardial-infarction heart is sustained by re-entry arising from slow and heterogeneous impulse propagation within the infarct border zone. Seminal histological and electrophysiological studies demonstrated that re-entry is enabled by conduction corridors of surviving myocardial bundles embedded within fibrotic scar. However, growing experimental and clinical evidence indicates that this structural concept alone does not fully account for the complex electrophysiological behaviours observed in infarct-related VT. In this review, we examine the evolutio

rTMS treatments combined with speech training for a conduction aphasia patient: A case report with MRI study.

RATIONALE: To date, little is known regarding the neural mechanisms of the functional recovery of language after repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in aphasia. Our aim was to investigate the mechanism that underlies rTMS and speech training in a case report. PATIENT CONCERNS AND DIAGNOSES: We report the case of a 39-year-old woman who was initially diagnosed with conduction aphasia following a left hemisphere stroke. INTERVENTIONS: The rTMS location comprised the left Broca area, and a frequency of 5 Hz for 20 min/d for 10 days during a 2-week period was used. She had receiv

Bone conduction experiments in animals - evidence for a non-osseous mechanism.

Bone conducted stimuli are used to differentiate between conductive and sensori-neural hearing loss. It has been thought that the main route for the transfer of vibratory energy from the point of application of the bone vibrator on the skull to the inner ear is completely osseous. An additional mechanism may play a prominent role. In rats, a bone vibrator was applied to the skull and also directly on the brain, after removing bone (a craniotomy), exposing the brain. Auditory nerve-brainstem evoked response (ABR) could be elicited not only with the vibrator on bone, but also with the vibrator d

A Soft-Fiber Bioelectronic Device with Axon-Like Architecture Enables Reliable Neural Recording In Vivo under Vigorous Activities.

Implantable neural devices that record neurons in various states, including static states, light activities such as walking, and vigorous activities such as running, offer opportunities for understanding brain functions and dysfunctions. However, recording neurons under vigorous activities remains a long-standing challenge because it leads to intense brain deformation. Thus, three key requirements are needed simultaneously for neural devices, that is, low modulus, low specific interfacial impedance, and high electrical conductivity, to realize stable device/brain interfaces and high-quality tr

Fully Automated Segmentation of Cervical Spinal Cord in Sagittal MR Images Using Swin-Unet Architectures.

Background/Objectives: The spinal cord is a critical component of the central nervous system that transmits neural signals between the brain and the body's peripheral regions through its nerve roots. Despite being partially protected by the vertebral column, the spinal cord remains highly vulnerable to trauma, tumors, infections, and degenerative or inflammatory disorders. These conditions can disrupt neural conduction, resulting in severe functional impairments, such as paralysis, motor deficits, and sensory loss. Therefore, accurate and comprehensive spinal cord segmentation is essential for…

Inflammation induced by tumor-associated nerves promotes resistance to anti-PD-1 therapy in cancer patients and is targetable by interleukin-6 blockade.

While the nervous system has reciprocal interactions with both cancer and the immune system, little is known about the potential role of tumor associated nerves (TANs) in modulating anti-tumoral immunity. Moreover, while peri-neural invasion is a well establish poor prognostic factor across cancer types, the mechanisms driving this clinical effect remain unknown. Here, we provide clinical and mechniastic association between TANs damage and resistance to anti-PD-1 therapy. Using phase shift Granger causality to measure directed connectivity in EEG recordings.

Cortical activity is maintained by neural networks working in tandem. Electroencephalographic (EEG) signals across two sites are said to be coherent with one another when they show consistent phase relations. However, periods of desynchrony beginning with a shift in phase relations are a necessary aspect of information processing. Traditional measures of EEG coherence lack the temporal resolution required to divide the relationship between two signals into periods of synchrony and desynchrony and are unable to specify the direction of information transmission (i.e., which site is leading and w
