Comparing human and chimpanzee temporal lobe neuroanatomy reveals modifications to human language hubs beyond the frontotemporal arcuate fasciculus.

The biological foundation for the language-ready brain in the human lineage remains a debated subject. In humans, the arcuate fasciculus (AF) white matter and the posterior portions of the middle temporal gyrus are crucial for language. Compared with other primates, the human AF has been shown to dramatically extend into the posterior temporal lobe, which forms the basis of a number of models of the structural connectivity basis of language. Recent advances in both language research and comparative neuroimaging invite a reassessment of the anatomical differences in language streams between hum

Perceived stress modulates the activity between the amygdala and the cortex.

The significant link between stress and psychiatric disorders has prompted research on stress's impact on the brain. Interestingly, previous studies on healthy subjects have demonstrated an association between perceived stress and amygdala volume, although the mechanisms by which perceived stress can affect brain function remain unknown. To better understand what this association entails at a functional level, herein, we explore the association of perceived stress, measured by the PSS10 questionnaire, with disseminated functional connectivity between brain areas. Using resting-state fMRI from

A neurocognitive account of attentional control theory: how does trait anxiety affect the brain's attentional networks?

Attentional control theory (ACT) was proposed to account for trait anxiety's effects on cognitive performance. According to ACT, impaired processing efficiency in high anxiety is mediated through inefficient executive processes that are needed for effective attentional control. Here we review the central assumptions and predictions of ACT within the context of more recent empirical evidence from neuroimaging studies. We then attempt to provide an account of ACT within a framework of the relevant cognitive processes and their associated neural mechanisms and networks, particularly the fronto-pa

Impaired brain networks functional connectivity after acute mild hypoxia.

This study aimed to analyze the changes in brain networks functional connectivity of pilots exposed to simulated hypoxia using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). A total of 35 healthy male pilots exposed to 14.5% oxygen concentration (corresponding to an altitude of 3000 m) underwent resting-state fMRI scans. The independent component analysis (ICA) approach was used to analyze changes in the resting-state brain networks functional connectivity of pilots after hypoxic exposure, and 9 common components in brain functional networks were identified. In the functional conn

Brain Functional Connectivity Mapping of Behavioral Flexibility in Rhesus Monkeys.

The predisposition to engage in autonomous habitual behaviors has been associated with behavioral disorders, such as obsessive-compulsive disorder and addiction. Attentional set-shifting tasks (ASSTs), which incorporate changes governing the association of discriminative stimuli with contingent reinforcement, are commonly used to measure underlying processes of cognitive/behavioral flexibility. The purpose of this study was to identify primate brain networks that mediate trait-like deficits in ASST performance using resting-state fMRI. A self-pacing ASST was administered to three cohorts of rh

Disrupted neural correlates of anesthesia and sleep reveal early circuit dysfunctions in Alzheimer models.

Dysregulated homeostasis of neural activity has been hypothesized to drive Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathogenesis. AD begins with a decades-long presymptomatic phase, but whether homeostatic mechanisms already begin failing during this silent phase is unknown. We show that before the onset of memory decline and sleep disturbances, familial AD (fAD) model mice display no deficits in CA1 mean firing rate (MFR) during active wakefulness. However, homeostatic down-regulation of CA1 MFR is disrupted during non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep and general anesthesia in fAD mouse models. The resultant

A connectivity-constrained computational account of topographic organization in primate high-level visual cortex.

Inferotemporal (IT) cortex in humans and other primates is topographically organized, containing multiple hierarchically organized areas selective for particular domains, such as faces and scenes. This organization is commonly viewed in terms of evolved domain-specific visual mechanisms. Here, we develop an alternative, domain-general and developmental account of IT cortical organization. The account is instantiated in interactive topographic networks (ITNs), a class of computational models in which a hierarchy of model IT areas, subject to biologically plausible connectivity-based constraints

Thalamocortical contributions to cognitive task activity.

Thalamocortical interaction is a ubiquitous functional motif in the mammalian brain. Previously (Hwang et al., 2021), we reported that lesions to network hubs in the human thalamus are associated with multi-domain behavioral impairments in language, memory, and executive functions. Here, we show how task-evoked thalamic activity is organized to support these broad cognitive abilities. We analyzed functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data from human subjects that performed 127 tasks encompassing a broad range of cognitive representations. We first investigated the spatial organization of

Neurobiological antecedents of multisite pain in children.

Altered brain structure and function is evident in adults with multisite chronic pain. Although many such adults trace their pain back to childhood, it has been difficult to disentangle whether central nervous system alterations precede or are consequences of chronic pain. If the former is true, aberrant brain activity may identify children vulnerable to developing chronic pain later in life. We examined structural and functional brain magnetic resonance imaging metrics in a subset of children from the first 2 assessments of the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development Study. Children (aged

Individual variation in brain network topology is linked to course of illness in major depressive disorder.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a chronic and highly recurrent disorder. The functional connectivity in depression is affected by the cumulative effect of course of illness. However, previous neuroimaging studies on abnormal functional connection have not mainly focused on the disease duration, which is seen as a secondary factor. Here, we used a data-driven analysis (multivariate distance matrix regression) to examine the relationship between the course of illness and resting-state functional dysconnectivity in MDD. This method identified a region in the anterior cingulate cortex, which is

Imbalance between the caudate and putamen connectivity in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Compulsive behaviors in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) have been suggested to result from an imbalance in cortico-striatal connectivity. However, the nature of this impairment, the relative involvement of different striatal areas, their imbalance in genetically related but unimpaired individuals, and their relationship with cognitive dysfunction in OCD patients, remain unknown. METHODS: In the current study, striatal (i.e., caudate and putamen) whole-brain connectivity was computed in a sample of OCD patients (OCD, n = 62), unaffected first-degree relatives (UFDR, n = 53) and

Dynamic functional connectivity changes of resting-state brain network in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Patients with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have shown abnormal functional connectivity and network disruptions at the whole-brain static level. However, the changes in brain networks in ADHD patients from dynamic functional connectivity (DFC) perspective have not been fully understood. Accordingly, we executed DFC analysis on resting-state fMRI data of 25 ADHD patients and 27 typically developing (TD) children. A sliding window and Pearson correlation were used to construct the dynamic brain network of all subjects. The k-means+ + clustering method was used to recognize thre

Potential brain recovery of frontostriatal circuits in heroin users after prolonged abstinence: A preliminary study.

Neuroscientists have devoted efforts to explore potential brain recovery after prolonged abstinence in heroin users (HU). However, not much is known about whether frontostriatal circuits can recover after prolonged abstinence in HU. An eight-month longitudinal study was carried out for HU. Two MRI scans were obtained at baseline (HU1) and 8-month follow-up (HU2). The functional and structural connectivities of dorsal and ventral frontostriatal pathways were measured by resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). Correlation analyses were employed to reveal

White matter connectivity in uncinate fasciculus accounts for visual attention span in developmental dyslexia.

The present study aimed to investigate the role of connectivity disruptions in two fiber pathways, the uncinate fasciculus (UF) and the frontal aslant tract (FAT), in developmental dyslexia and determine the relationship between the connectivity of these pathways and behavioral performance in children with dyslexia. A total of 26 French children with dyslexia and 31 age-matched control children were included. Spherical deconvolution tractography was used to reconstruct the two fiber pathways. Hindrance-modulated oriented anisotropy (HMOA) was used to measure the connectivity of each fiber path

Regional gene expression signatures are associated with sex-specific functional connectivity changes in depression.

The neural substrates of depression may differ in men and women, but the underlying mechanisms are incompletely understood. Here, we show that depression is associated with sex-specific patterns of abnormal functional connectivity in the default mode network and in five regions of interest with sexually dimorphic transcriptional effects. Regional differences in gene expression in two independent datasets explained the neuroanatomical distribution of abnormal connectivity. These gene sets varied by sex and were strongly enriched for genes implicated in depression, synapse function, immune signa

Content-specific vulnerability of recent episodic memories in Alzheimer's disease.

Endel Tulving's episodic memory framework emphasizes the multifaceted re-experiencing of personal events. Indeed, decades of research focused on the experiential nature of episodic memories, usually treating recent episodic memory as a coherent experiential quality. However, recent insights into the functional architecture of the medial temporal lobe show that different types of mnemonic information are segregated into distinct neural pathways in brain circuits empirically associated with episodic memory. Moreover, recent memories do not fade as a whole under conditions of progressive neurodeg…

Effects of orbitofrontal cortex and ventral hippocampus disconnection on spatial reversal learning.

Behavioural flexibility is a cognition-related function that enables subjects to adapt to a changing environment. Orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) and hippocampus (HC) have been involved in cognitive flexibility, but the interaction between these structures might be of particular functional significance. We applied a disconnection model in C57BL/6JRj mice to investigate the importance of OFC and ventral HC (vHC) interaction. Spatial acquisition and reversal performance in the Morris water maze (MWM) was compared between animals with small contralateral excitotoxic lesions to OFC and vHC, ipsilateral

Disconnection of posterior part of the frontal aslant tract causes acute phase motor functional deficit.

The frontal aslant tract (FAT) mainly connects the supplementary motor area (SMA) and inferior frontal gyrus. The left FAT is involved in language-related functions, while the functional role of the right FAT is not fully understood. The aim of this study was to investigate the function of the right FAT by dividing it into three segments according to the anatomical structure. A total of 34 right frontal gliomas who had undergone surgery were studied. Participants were assessed for the acute and chronic phases of several neuropsychological and motor functions. FAT was reconstructed into the ant

A functional map for diverse forelimb actions within brainstem circuitry.

The brainstem is a key centre in the control of body movements. Although the precise nature of brainstem cell types and circuits that are central to full-body locomotion are becoming known1-5, efforts to understand the neuronal underpinnings of skilled forelimb movements have focused predominantly on supra-brainstem centres and the spinal cord6-12. Here we define the logic of a functional map for skilled forelimb movements within the lateral rostral medulla (latRM) of the brainstem. Using in vivo electrophysiology in freely moving mice, we reveal a neuronal code with tuning of latRM population

Promising vulnerability markers of substance use and misuse: A review of human neurobehavioral studies.

Substance use often begins, and noticeably escalates, during adolescence. Identifying predictive neurobehavioral vulnerability markers of substance use and related problems may improve targeted prevention and early intervention initiatives. This review synthesizes 44 longitudinal studies and explores the utility of developmental imbalance models and neurobehavioral addiction frameworks in predicting neural and cognitive patterns that are associated with prospective substance use initiation and escalation among young people. A total of 234 effect sizes were calculated and compared. Findings sug
