The present work focuses on the tapping test, which is a method that is commonly used in the literature to assess dexterity, speed, and motor coordination by repeatedly moving fingers, performing a tapping action on a flat surface. During the test, the activation of specific brain regions enhances fine motor abilities, improving motor control. The research also explores neuromuscular and biomechanical factors related to finger dexterity, revealing neuroplastic adaptation to repetitive movements. To give an objective evaluation of all cited physiological aspects, this work proposes a measuremen

Prenatal repair of myelomeningocele (MMC) is associated with lower rates of hydrocephalus requiring ventriculoperitoneal shunt and improved motor function when compared with postnatal repair. Efforts aiming to develop less invasive surgical techniques to decrease the risk for the pregnant patient while achieving similar benefits for the fetus have led to the implementation of fetoscopic surgical techniques. While no ideal anesthetic technique for fetoscopic MMC repair has been demonstrated, we present our anesthetic approach for these repairs, including considerations for both the pregnant pat

Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is an inherited neuromuscular disorder characterized by progressive muscle weakness and atrophy, resulting from the degeneration of motor neurons in the spinal cord. A critical aspect of SMA is its impact on respiratory function. As the disease progresses, respiratory muscles, in particular intercostal muscles, become increasingly affected, leading to breathing difficulties and respiratory failure. Without intervention, many children with SMA type 1 die from respiratory failure before their second year of life. While assisted ventilation has improved survival, it

BACKGROUND: Congenital myasthenic syndrome is a disease that occurs due to several types such as mutations in different pre-synaptic, synaptic, post-synaptic proteins and, glycosylation defects associated with congenital myopathy. Juvenile myasthenia gravis is an autoimmune condition usually caused by antibodies targeting the acetylcholine receptor.
AIMS: Our objective is to conduct an analysis on the subgroup traits exhibited by patients who have been diagnosed with congenital myasthenic syndrome and juvenile myasthenia gravis, with a focus on their long-term monitoring and management.

The identification of respiratory patterns based on the movement of the chest wall can assist in monitoring an individual's health status, particularly those with neuromuscular disorders, such as hemiplegia and Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Thoraco-abdominal asynchrony (TAA) refers to the lack of coordination between the rib cage and abdominal movements, characterized by a time delay in their expansion. Motion capture systems, like optoelectronic plethysmography (OEP), are commonly employed to assess these asynchronous movements. However, alternative technologies able to capture chest wall move

Membrane cholesterol oxidation is a hallmark of redox and metabolic imbalance, and it may accompany neurodegenerative disorders. Using microelectrode recordings of postsynaptic responses as well as fluorescent dyes for monitoring synaptic vesicle cycling and membrane properties, the action of enzymatic cholesterol oxidation on neuromuscular transmission was studied in the mice diaphragms. Cholesterol oxidase (ChO) at low concentration disturbed lipid-ordering specifically in the synaptic membranes, but it did not change markedly spontaneous exocytosis and evoked release in response to single s

OnabotulinumtoxinA is an injectable medication that produces muscle relaxation through local chemical denervation at the neuromuscular junction. Discovery of onabotulinumtoxinA's aesthetic benefits occurred serendipitously in the 1980s at the intersection of several medical disciplines, including ophthalmology, neurology, otolaryngology, and dermatology. Patients receiving onabotulinumtoxinA for blepharospasm, hemifacial spasm, and dystonia noticed their periorbital wrinkles disappearing, particularly frown lines between the eyebrows called glabellar lines (GL). Aesthetic use of onabotulinumto

BACKGROUND: The patients with neuromuscular diseases (NMD) are very fragile and it is hard to evaluate respiratory involvement of the primary disease in this group. Therefore, our study aimed to reveal the relationship between pulmonary function tests (PFT) and impulse oscillometry (IOS) and their correlation with respiratory clinical findings in NMD.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 86 consecutive patients with NMD were included. The clinical findings of respiratory involvement, PFT, and IOS results of the patients were analyzed.
RESULTS: Forty patients out of 86 were female. There were 29

INTRODUCTION: Heterozygous activating mutations in KCNJ11 cause both permanent and transient neonatal diabetes. A minority of patients also have neurological features. Early genetic diagnosis has important therapeutic implications as treatment with sulfonylurea provides good metabolic control and exerts a protective effect on neuromuscular function.
CASE PRESENTATION: A term female infant with normal birth weight (2.73 kg, z-score: -1.69) was admitted to the Neonatal Unit at Addenbrookes Hospital. She had been antenatally diagnosed with KCNJ11 mutation-R201C inherited from her glibenclamide-t

BACKGROUND: Congenital myopathies are a group of rare neuromuscular diseases characterized by specific histopathological features. The relationship between the pathologies and the genetic causes is complex, and the prevalence of myopathy-causing genes varies among patients from different ethnic groups. The aim of the present study was to characterize congenital myopathies with infancy onset among patients registered at our institution.
METHOD: This retrospective study enrolled 56 patients based on the pathological and/or genetic diagnosis. Clinical, histopathological and genetic features of t

BACKGROUND: Spinal muscular atrophy type 1 (SMA1) is a neuromuscular disorder with a natural history of chronic respiratory failure and death during infancy without ventilation. Recently, disease-modifying therapies such as nusinersen have improved disease trajectory. However, objective data on the trajectory of polysomnography outcomes, the relationship between motor scores and respiratory parameters, respiratory technology dependence and healthcare utilization in children with SMA1 remain to be elucidated.
METHODS: This was a retrospective observational study of children with SMA1 receiving

Therapeutic exercise is a recommended first-line treatment for patients with knee and hip osteoarthritis (OA); however, there is little specific advice or practical resources to guide clinicians in its implementation. As the first in a series of projects by the Osteoarthritis Research Society International Rehabilitation Discussion Group to address this gap, we aim in this narrative review to synthesize current literature informing the implementation of therapeutic exercise for patients with knee and hip OA, focusing on evidence from systematic reviews and randomized controlled trials. BACKGROUND: Anti-programmed cell death 1 (PD-1) monoclonal antibodies (Abs) unleash an immune response to cancer. However, a disruption of the immune checkpoint function by blocking PD-1/PD-ligand 1(PD-L1) signaling may trigger myasthenia gravis (MG) as a life-threatening immune-related adverse event. MG is a neuromuscular disease and is closely associated with being positive for anti-acetylcholine receptor (anti-AChR) Abs, which are high specific and diagnostic Abs for MG.
METHODS: A 72-year-old man was diagnosed with chemotherapy-refractory lung squamous cell carcinoma and nivolumab was sel

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this paper is to present a structural decomposition subspace (SDSS) method for decomposition of the joint torque to intrinsic, reflexive, and voluntary torques and identification of joint dynamic stiffness.
METHODS: First, it formulates a novel state-space representation for the joint dynamic stiffness modeled by a parallel-cascade structure with a concise parameter set that provides a direct link between the state-space representation matrices and the parallel-cascade parameters. Second, it presents a subspace method for the identification of the new state-space mod

Organophosphorus pesticide poisoning causes tens of thousands of deaths each year across the world. Poisoning includes acute cholinergic crisis as a result of AChE inhibition, intermediate syndrome (IMS) due to neuromuscular necrosis and organophosphate-induced delayed neuropathy (OPIDN) due to inhibition of neuropathy target esterase (NTE). Standard treatment for acute poisoning involves administration of intravenous atropine, oxime 2-PAM to counter AChE inhibition and diazepam for CNS protection. However clinical trials showed ineffectiveness of the standard therapy regimen. Although new oxi

Fatigue is one of the most common and disabling symptoms of multiple sclerosis (MS) and has a significant, often underestimated, impact on patients' quality of life. Current management is mainly symptomatic. 3,4-diaminopyridine (3,4-DAP) is a voltage-dependent potassium channel blocker that has been used on a named patient basis in Europe for many years to improve motor function and fatigue in patients with MS and other neuromuscular disorders, and it is undergoing the European approval process for Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome (LEMS). The efficacy and safety of 3,4-DAP as symptomatic ther

Cardiac disease is a well-known complication of myotonic dystrophy, understanding of which has been increased by recent advances in both molecular techniques and cardiological investigations. Conduction disturbances and tachyarrhythmias occur commonly in myotonic dystrophy. These have been shown to have a broad correlation in severity with both neuromuscular disease and the extent of the molecular defect in some, but not all, studies. Clinical evidence of generalised cardiomyopathy is unusual. The rate of progression differs widely between individuals; sudden death may be caused by ventricular
