Beyond the Sound: Evidence-Based Nursing Care for Patients With Terminal Secretions.

Terminal secretions, commonly referred to as the "death rattle," are oropharyngeal secretions that accumulate in patients nearing the end of life who cannot clear them. Although physiologically benign, these secretions can cause emotional distress to families, nurses, and care providers. They are presumed to impact the quality of death, relating to comfort and dignity. This document reviews interventions for managing terminal secretions, emphasizing evidence-based practices. It explores pharmacologic methods, like anticholinergic medications-though little evidence supports their benefit-sugges

Immersive simulated reality scenarios for enhancing students' experience of people with learning disabilities across all fields of nurse education.

Poor preparation of nurses, regarding learning disabilities can have devastating consequences. High-profile reports and the Nursing and Midwifery Council requirements led this University to introduce Shareville into the undergraduate and postgraduate nursing curriculum. Shareville is a virtual environment developed at Birmingham City University, in which student nurses learn from realistic, problem-based scenarios featuring people with learning disabilities. Following the implementation of the resource an evaluation of both staff and student experience was undertaken. Students reported that pr

A transpersonal approach to care: a qualitative study of performers' experiences with DooR to DooR, a hospital-based arts program.

The arts have a history of relaxing and calming patients in the hospital setting, yet research is limited on how arts may aid in the healing process. DooR to DooR was established to bring comfort, respite, and healing to hospitalized patients, family members, and health care staff. DooR to DooR is located in the University of North Carolina Hospitals at Chapel Hill, North Carolina; professional performing artists visit there, spending 5 to 10 minutes with each patient, family member, and health care staff. The purpose of this qualitative study is to understand performers' experiences and of ho

A survey of nurses' perceptions of the intensive care delirium screening checklist.

OBJECTIVES: Delirium in critically ill patients is common and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Routine delirium screening is recommended by the Society of Critical Care Medicine. The Intensive Care Delirium Screening Checklist (ICDSC) is one validated and commonly-used tool, but little is known about nurses'perceptions of using the ICDSC, and of barriers to delirium assessment and treatment. DESIGN: A survey was administered to 189 critical care-trained nurses working on four oncology inpatient units, where the ICDSC has been used for greater than five years. RESULTS: Ei

Knowledge and Attitude on Eye Donation Among Medical and Nursing Students in a Tertiary Care Centre in Western India.

Background Corneal blindness poses a significant public health concern in India. Penetrating keratoplasty stands out as the most efficient and frequently conducted solid organ transplantation procedure, providing significant potential for visual rehabilitation in affected patients, but its broad application continues to be impeded by the limited availability of donor corneas. The low rate of eye donation has been attributed to both the reluctance of potential donors to pledge their eyes and the inadequate efforts by healthcare workers to educate the public about the eye donation process, signi

Congenital Hypothyroidism.

Congenital hypothyroidism (CH) is a disorder of thyroid hormone deficiency which develops secondary to incomplete thyroid development or inadequate thyroid hormone production. State-mandated newborn screening throughout the United States has increased the detection rate of CH, allowing for early intervention. Although the overall mortality rate of CH is low, delayed or omitted treatment can lead to devastating neurocognitive outcomes. As such, CH is regarded as the leading cause of preventable intellectual disability in children. Early identification, facilitated by astute neonatal nursing and

Investigation of Intestinal Parasites in Living Nursing Home.

OBJECTIVE: Intestinal infections are common in the elderly, presented with atypical symptoms and may be the cause of mortality with a more severe clinical manifestation. The weakening of cellular and humoral immunity by aging affects the intestinal flora and increases the risk of infection in the presence of chronic diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of possible parasitic agents in the intestinal system of ≥65-year-old nursing home residents through fecal examination, and to determine the demographic features (age and gender) of this elderly group. METHODS: A tota

Transition management as an intervention for survivor syndrome.

In today's health care environment of merged organizations, downsizing and restructuring, employees can be experiencing a debilitating syndrome called "layoff survivor syndrome." This syndrome can have a crippling effect on workers and organizations as employees struggle to adapt to the changed working environment. This article represents my self-reflection as a nursing unit manager who personally experienced survivor sickness and witnessed its impact on the unit staff that I was leading at the time. The work of Noer (1993) is explored to clarify the syndrome and describe how the nursing staff
