Relationship between type of smokeless tobacco & risk of cancer: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Causative linkages of smokeless tobacco (SLT) use with oral potentially malignant disorders and cancers of oral cavity, oesophagus and pancreas have been reported. Published meta-analyses have provided pooled risk estimates for major cancers caused by SLT, both on global and regional levels. This systematic review was aimed at summarizing the available studies on occurrence and mortality risk of common cancers due to various SLT products. METHODS: PubMed and Google Scholar databases were systematically searched from 1985 till January 2018 for observational studies on

Use of Real-world Evidence to Evaluate the Effectiveness of Herpes Zoster Vaccine.

This article reviews the use of real-world evidence (RWE) from observational studies to evaluate herpes zoster vaccine effectiveness and complement clinical trial data that have known limitations. The use of RWE with appropriate study designs and cautious interpretation can be informative in decision-making. Understanding the advantages and limitations of studies yielding RWE can facilitate the critical evaluation of findings from different studies. This is a timely issue, as regulatory agencies are considering how RWE can contribute to the assessment of effectiveness in regulatory decision-ma

Estimating Typhoid Fever Risk Associated with Lack of Access to Safe Water: A Systematic Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Unsafe water is a well-known risk for typhoid fever, but a pooled estimate of the population-level risk of typhoid fever resulting from exposure to unsafe water has not been quantified. An accurate estimation of the risk from unsafe water will be useful in demarcating high-risk populations, modeling typhoid disease burden, and targeting prevention and control activities. METHODS: We conducted a systematic literature review and meta-analysis of observational studies that measured the risk of typhoid fever associated with drinking unimproved water as per WHO-UNICEF's definition or d

Associations of Self-Presentation on Facebook with Mental Health and Personality Variables: A Systematic Review.

Many investigations of the associations of self-presentation on Facebook with mental health and personality variables exist, but their findings have not yet been synthetized. We therefore carried out a narrative synthesis of 21 observational studies (combined N = 7,573) obtained from a systematic search of four academic databases. Significant self-presentation associations were yielded for self-esteem, perceived social support, social anxiety, well-being, depression, bipolar/mania, stress, self-consciousness, and insecure attachment. Significant associations were also yielded for all of the bi

Effect of prostaglandin analogue use on the development of cystoid macular edema after phacoemulsification using STROBE statement methodology.

Cataract surgery is a common procedure, and cystoid macular edema (CME) is a sight-threatening complication. Prostaglandin analogues are the first-line therapy for glaucoma, but their effect on the risk for CME after phacoemulsification is unknown. A systematic search of Medline and PubMed was performed to determine the effect of the use of prostaglandin analogues (PGA) on the development of CME after cataract surgery. A total of 412 articles were identified. Thirteen articles met inclusion criteria and were analyzed using Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (S

Does vitamin E prevent asthma or wheeze in children: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Asthma is a heterogeneous disease with multiple phenotypes. Epidemiologic studies suggest a close relationship between vitamin E and the occurrence of asthma, wheezing and atopic conditions during childhood. Previous results on its effects have been conflicting. The aim of this meta-analysis was to critically examine the current evidence on the association of vitamin E with childhood asthma and wheezing. We searched electronic databases for observational studies in English-language journals published from 2000 to 2016. The initial search found 420 titles; nineteen studies were eligible accordi

Association between air pollution and development of atrial fibrillation: A meta-analysis of observational studies.

BACKGROUND: Current evidence suggests that gaseous or particulate pollutants may increase the risk of atrial fibrillation (AF), although this association is still uncertain. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of literature using PubMed, Ovid, Embase and Web of Science to identify studies reporting on the association between gaseous (ozone, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide) or particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5) and AF risk published until March 2015. The overall effect estimate was presented as the population-attributable risks with 95% CI. We used both fix-effects and

Target risk factors for dementia prevention: a systematic review and Delphi consensus study on the evidence from observational studies.

OBJECTIVE: Dementia has a multifactorial etiology, but the importance of individual health and lifestyle related risk factors is often uncertain or based on few studies. The goal of this paper is to identify the major modifiable risk factors for dementia as a first step in developing an effective preventive strategy and promoting healthy late life cognitive functioning. METHODS: A mixed-method approach combined findings from a systematic literature review and a Delphi consensus study. The literature search was conducted in PubMed and updated an earlier review by the United States National Ins

The treatment of hypertension in people with dementia: a systematic review of observational studies.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension is very common in older people and a number of trials of antihypertensives have demonstrated benefit from treatment in even the oldest old. However, people with dementia were significantly under-represented in these studies and as a population are more likely to be physically frail, to suffer orthostatic hypotension and to experience adverse effects from polypharmacy at a lower drug count. It may be that different thresholds for commencement and cessation of treatment should be considered and may already be used for this group. Against this background this review sets

Beyond BMI: The Clinical Relevance of Sarcopenia and Muscle Quality in Gynecologic Oncology from Meta-Analyses to Practice-The Potential Role of Body Composition Assessment, Including BIA, in Supportive Care.

Sarcopenia, low muscle mass, and low muscle radiodensity are increasingly being considered factors associated with treatment outcomes in patients with gynecological malignancies. Despite the growing body of evidence, body composition assessment is not routinely incorporated into clinical practice. The aim of this review was to present current evidence on the associations of muscle parameters with survival, complications, systemic treatment toxicity, and quality of life, as well as to discuss the opportunities and limitations of computed tomography (CT) and bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA

Treating Lower Phantom Limb Pain in the Postoperative Acute Care Setting Using Virtual Reality: Protocol for a 4-Phase Development and Feasibility Trial.

BACKGROUND: Phantom limb pain (PLP) affects most people living with lower limb amputations (LLAs). Nonpharmacological interventions, such as graded motor imagery (GMI), have demonstrated promise as PLP treatments. However, GMI access is limited by low patient buy-in and long public outpatient wait times. Considering PLP has been shown to be more prevalent and severe immediately following LLA, there is an urgent need to bypass barriers to allow for prompt access to PLP interventions. In response to this need, the multidisciplinary research team in this study developed a virtual reality (VR) pro

Prospective clinical trials to investigate clinical and molecular biomarkers.

Among clinical studies, randomized studies as well as well-designed observational studies are providing the highest quality data. In addition, these studies represent a good opportunity to examine biomarkers of ictogenesis and epileptogenesis. To date, no validated molecular or cellular biomarker exists for any aspect of epilepsy. We provide an overview of the inflammatory biomarkers under investigation in prospective clinical studies in epilepsy: proinflammatory cytokines in prolonged febrile seizure; High Mobility Group Box 1 (HMGB1) as a prognosis biomarker in epilepsy and the interaction b

Context analysis as a foundational step to inform the design and implementation of an interprofessional primary care model for new long-term medication users - the myCare Start Implementation Science Project.

BACKGROUND: Implementation science recognises that health innovations must be adapted to local contexts. Context analysis is a critical foundational phase for tailoring interventions and implementation strategies, yet remains underutilised in pharmaceutical sciences, limiting successful translation and scale-up of proven services in interprofessional settings. AIM: This paper provides a methodological roadmap highlighting the foundational role of context analysis in guiding real-world adaptation of a known service - the New Medicine Service - to form the myCare Start service in Switzerland.

Predictive modelling of clinically significant depressive symptoms after coronary artery bypass graft surgery: protocol for a multicentre observational study in two Swiss hospitals (the PsyCor study).

INTRODUCTION: Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) remains one of the most commonly performed cardiac surgeries worldwide. Despite surgical advancements, a significant proportion of patients experience psychological distress following surgery, with depression being particularly common. Current evidence regarding the effectiveness of preoperative psychological interventions in improving postoperative mental health outcomes remains inconclusive. There is a critical need for predictive models that can identify patients at risk of developing clinically significant depressive symptoms (CSDSs) and
