Comparison of retinal nerve fiber layer measured by time domain and spectral domain optical coherence tomography in optic neuritis.

PURPOSE: To study the relationship between retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness measurements from time domain (Stratus) and spectral domain (Cirrus HD) optical coherence tomography (OCT) in subjects with optic neuritis. METHODS: A total of 18 patients who had suffered monocular acute optic neuritis were imaged by a single trained operator using the Stratus-OCT (fast RNFL scan mode) and Cirrus HD-OCT (optic disc cube mode) on the same day. The relationship between RNFL thickness measurements of the two OCTs (overall and by quadrants) were evaluated using intraclass correlation coefficien

Self-Powered, Broadband, and Polarization-Sensitive Photodetector Based on the ReSe2/Ta2NiSe5 van der Waals Heterojunction.

Photodetectors that simultaneously integrate high responsivity, fast response, self-powered operation, and polarization sensitivity are highly needed for advanced imaging and optical information processing, yet remain challenging to realize in a simple device architecture. Here, the in-plane anisotropic ReSe2 and narrow-bandgap Ta2NiSe5 are utilized to construct a ReSe2/Ta2NiSe5 van der Waals heterojunction photodetector with self-powered broadband operation from 375 to 850 nm. Under 532 nm illumination in the self-powered mode, the device exhibits a responsivity of 0.381 A W-1 and a specific

CLEAR - Contact lens technologies of the future.

Contact lenses in the future will likely have functions other than correction of refractive error. Lenses designed to control the development of myopia are already commercially available. Contact lenses as drug delivery devices and powered through advancements in nanotechnology will open up further opportunities for unique uses of contact lenses. This review examines the use, or potential use, of contact lenses aside from their role to correct refractive error. Contact lenses can be used to detect systemic and ocular surface diseases, treat and manage various ocular conditions and as devices t

Robotic subxiphoid-optical thymectomy.

Robot-assisted thymectomy through a subxiphoid scopic approach can provide a good surgical view, similar to that of median sternotomy. We originally used the subxiphoid port only for the robotic scope to avoid instrument collision with the assistant device. This approach, robotic subxiphoid-optical thymectomy, is advantageous for the safe and accurate dissection of the bilateral phrenic nerves and the left brachiocephalic vein, which are especially needed in extended thymectomy for patients with myasthenia gravis.

Telecom Quantum Memory over 1 μs in Nanophotonic Lithium Niobate.

Nanophotonic quantum memory is a vital component for scalable quantum information processing for quantum computing, networking, and sensing applications. We store single-photon-level telecom-band optical pulses for more than 1 μs using an atomic frequency comb in erbium-doped thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN), well beyond what is practically feasible via propagation in even the best nanophotonic devices due to propagation losses. We verify the quantum nature of this storage by demonstrating the phase coherence and subsingle-photon noise upon retrieval. We also show the flexibility of our platfo

Laser-Driven Structural Transformation from a Bulk Crystal to a Layered Material.

Laser-induced phase transitions offer pathways of phase transitions that are inaccessible by conventional stimuli. In this Letter, we conduct ab initio simulations to numerically demonstrate a novel laser-induced structural transformation: converting a bulk crystal into a layered van der Waals material using intense light pulses. The transition is driven by a nonlinear phononic mechanism, where selectively exciting polar and antipolar phonon modes with polarized terahertz light breaks targeted interlayer bonds while preserving intralayer ones. We identify that strong anisotropy in bond sensiti

Synergistic Iodination-Hydrogen Bonding Design Enables Thermostable and Ultrahigh Refractive Index Poly(dithioacetal)s.

High refractive index polymers (HRIPs) serve as cutting-edge materials for lightweight, miniaturized, and high-resolution optical devices, although balancing ultrahigh refractive index, transparency, and thermostability remains challenging. Here, poly(dithioacetal)s with aromatic main chains, heavy and polarizable iodine groups, and additionally incorporated hydroxy units exhibit a high glass transition temperature (Tg = 112 °C) and an ultrahigh refractive index (nD = 1.81), while maintaining visible-light transparency (%T ≥ 96 at 1 μm thickness). Density measurements confirmed that the synerg…

Synthesis, Properties, and Applications of Morphology-Controlled Perovskite Quantum Dots.

Lead halide perovskite quantum dots (QDs) have become a promising class of nanomaterials due to their simple, scalable synthesis and high luminescence efficiency. However, their high ionicity and low lattice formation energy make controlling the synthesis of perovskite QDs particularly challenging. Although there have been significant advances in controlling the size of perovskite QDs, increasing efforts have focused on selecting and stabilizing their various surface facets. In this review, we examine recent developments in morphology-controlled isotropic perovskite QDs, emphasizing the latest

Metacavity Quantum Electrodynamics.

Cavity quantum electrodynamics (cQED) harnesses light-matter interactions to produce nonclassical light states. However, a fundamental challenge lies in simultaneously achieving Purcell enhancement and tailored wave front control within a single cavity, due to conflicting resonator requirements. Here, we overcome this limitation by demonstrating triggered single-photon emission with customizable wave fronts from semiconductor quantum dots embedded in geometric-phase metacavities. These monolithic devices-only 200 nm thick-deliver Purcell-enhanced emission alongside spin-momentum-locked radiati

Shaping an ultrafast laser light sheet for inscription of fiber Bragg gratings.

A beam shaping approach employing a single spatial light modulator to generate uniform light sheets in an optical fiber is presented for the direct fabrication of fiber Bragg gratings using femtosecond laser radiation. A Gaussian beam is transformed into a narrow 700 nm light sheet by uniquely combining astigmatism, a one-dimensional axicon, and higher-order phase corrections to enable aberration-free air focusing into the core of a standard telecommunications fiber for plane-by-plane grating inscription. First-order single-pulse devices targeting 1570 nm and 863 nm wavelengths are reported wi

Chirality-Dependent Orbital Bulk Photovoltaic Effect in a 1D Helical Nanowire.

Bulk photovoltaic effect (BPVE) is a novel nonlinear-optical (NLO) effect for the development of advanced optoelectronic devices. Here, we report a new type of BPVE, chirality-dependent orbital BPVE (orbit-BPVE), in a one-dimensional (1D) helical system, whose orbital-polarized photocurrent is solely determined by the chirality. This orbit-BPVE is contributed by the chirality-dependent orbital angular momentum (OAM), and the chirality-locked spin-BPVE is a secondary effect arising from the orbit-BPVE, mediated by spin-orbit coupling (SOC). The minimal-model calculations further demonstrate tha

An electrografted monolayer of polyaniline as a tuneable platform for a glucose biosensor.

Polyaniline (PANI), a nanostructured conducting polymer, has shown significant potential in optical and bioelectrochemical devices. However, its performance and stability on various substrates are hindered by weak adhesion to the surface. In this study, a strongly adherent polyaniline conducting polymer layer with a thickness of five nanometers was electrografted onto an initiating monolayer on gold and tin-doped indium oxide substrates. These electrografted monolayers consist of vertically oriented fully oxidized-protonated (pernigraniline salt) and deprotonated (pernigraniline base) forms of

Applications of Adaptive Optics Imaging for Studying Conditions Affecting the Fovea.

The fovea is a highly specialized region of the central retina, defined by an absence of inner retinal layers and the accompanying vasculature, an increased density of cone photoreceptors, a near absence of rod photoreceptors, and unique private-line photoreceptor to midget ganglion cell circuitry. These anatomical specializations support high-acuity vision in humans. While direct study of foveal shape and size is routinely performed using optical coherence tomography, examination of the other anatomical specializations of the fovea has only recently become possible using an array of adaptive

Spatial Ordering of the Structure of Polymer-Capped Gold Nanorods under an External DC Electric Field.

We studied the alignment changes of polymer-capped gold nanorods (GNRs@PS) under an applied electric field by visible-near-infrared absorption and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) measurements. Monodispersed GNRs with an aspect ratio of 4.0 were produced by the seed-mediated growth method using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide and sodium oleate binary surfactants. We investigated the phase transition between the ordered structure of GNRs@PS induced by the external electric field. At appropriate field strengths (>3 V/μm), the SAXS profiles of GNRs@PS showed a smectic ordered structure. Increas

Covalently Fluorophore-Functionalized ZIF-8 Colloidal Particles as a Sensing Platform for Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals Such as Phthalates Plasticizers.

We present the optical sensing of phthalate esters (PAEs), a group of endocrine-disrupting chemicals. The sensing takes place as changes in the fluorescence emission intensity of aminopyrene covalently bound to the organic ligands of the metal-organic framework compound ZIF-8. In the presence of PAEs, a quenching of the fluorescence emission is observed. We evaluated strategies to engineer colloidal size distribution of the sensing particles to optimize the sensory response to PAEs. A thorough characterization of the modified ZIF-8 nanoparticles included powder X-ray diffractometry, transmissi
