Prevalence of overweight and obesity in incarcerated individuals in developed and developing countries: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

We systematically assessed evidence of overweight and obesity prevalence, and possible determinants, in people who experience incarceration globally. We searched Embase, Medline, and Cochrane databases. Overweight and obesity proportions were pooled into a meta-analysis and compared with national prevalences. Seventy-one studies met the inclusion criteria; 38 were included in the meta-analysis. Studies in high-income countries reported higher proportions of overweight and obesity (73.3%, 95% CI 73.1, 73.5) than upper-middle-income countries (66.1%, 95% CI 64.1, 67.7) and lower-middle-income co…

Double burden of malnutrition in Guatemala: co-existence of childhood stunting and overweight and obesity within the household.

This paper defines the double burden of malnutrition as occurring when over- and undernutrition coexist within a household. It is most common in countries undergoing the nutrition transition where cheap and accessible food is often of poor quality. This brief narrative review examines four cycles of reports from the Epidemiological Health and Nutrition Surveillance System (SIVESNU, Spanish acronym) in Guatemala between 2015-2018/19, examining the following indicators: overall double burden of stunting among children aged ≤59 months and overweight or obesity among women aged 15-49 years in the …

Meet-in-the-middle meets multi-omics identifying molecular signatures of environmental drivers of childhood overweight.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is a multi-cause chronic disease recognized across the lifespan, with childhood obesity prevalence rising over the past decades. Although exposome-wide association studies have identified early-life environmental drivers of child obesity, and explored the multi-omics signatures of the exposome of children, it is understudied whether the combined effects of multiple exposures are potentially mediated by multi-omics. METHODS: Within the Human Early Life Exposome (HELIX) project, 1041 mother-child pairs were surveyed for a wide range of environmental exposures including over
