Newer genetic investigations show that the complete or classical hydatidiform mole has in over 90% of the cases a diploid female set of chromosomes which is exclusively of paternal origin. The 23 X sperm genom is doubled and the nucleus of the ovocyte is degenerated. In contradistinction the nucleus of the ovocyte persists in partial moles. The normal ontogenesis is also disturbed by a preponderance of paternal genetic material. By melting of 2 instead of 1 paternal germ cell (Dispermia) the genom of partial moles is to 1/3 of maternal and to 2/3 of paternal origin. The triploid set of chromos

BackgroundParental smartphone use during parent-child interactions, known as parental phubbing, may negatively affect adolescents' emotional well-being and contribute to psychological maltreatment. However, the mechanisms linking parental phubbing to adolescents' own digital behaviors remain unclear.ObjectiveThis study examined the associations among parental phubbing, adolescent phubbing, emotion regulation difficulties, perceived psychological maltreatment, and emotional eating, and investigated the mediating roles of emotion regulation difficulties and psychological maltreatment.MethodsThe

BACKGROUND: The potential for men with congenital heart disease (CHD) to father children and the impact of paternal CHD on offspring birth outcomes are not well understood.
METHODS: Using Norwegian nationwide registries from 1994 to 2014, we identified two study populations: 1 829 877 men aged 18-50 years and 1 207 410 newborns. First, we reported the time trends of CHD in men and paternal CHD in newborns. Second, we compared the rate of becoming fathers in men with and without CHD. Third, we compared birth outcomes in offspring with and without paternal CHD.
RESULTS: Between 1994 and 2014,

We investigated the association of paternal depression in the prenatal and early postnatal period with child maltreatment tendency at two months postpartum among Japanese fathers. This population-based longitudinal study recruited Japanese perinatal women and their partners living in Nishio City, Aichi, Japan. Of the 270 fathers who participated, 196 were included in the analysis. All data were collected via self-administrated questionnaires at four time points: 20 weeks' gestation and in the first few days, one month, and two months postpartum. Paternal depression was assessed using the Edinb

This review aims to provide a rational and ethical basis for prenatal testing for uniparental disomy (UPD) in cases with abnormal ultrasound findings or numeric and/or structural chromosomal aberrations in chorionic villous or amniotic fluid samples. The clinical phenotypes of the genomic imprinting-associated paternal UPD 6 (transient neonatal diabetes mellitus), maternal UPD 7 (Silver-Russell syndrome), paternal UPD 11p (Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome), maternal UPD 14 (precocious puberty, short stature and highly variable developmental delay), paternal UPD 14 (polyhydramnios and a bell-shaped

While maternal health has long been the focus of reproductive and developmental research, increasing attention is being given to the father's preconception health. Over the past two decades, growing evidence supports the Paternal Origins of Health and Disease (POHaD) paradigm, highlighting how paternal environmental factors prior to conception can significantly influence offspring development and long-term health. Rodent models have provided critical mechanistic insights into how paternal environmental exposure can alter the sperm epigenetic cargo. Emerging evidence indicates that paternal nut

Evidence suggests that trace exposures to select elements may increase the risk for adverse birth outcomes. To investigate further, we used multiple regression to assess associations between preconception parental exposures to Pb, Cd, and total Hg in blood, and 21 elements in urine, with n=235 singleton birth outcomes, adjusted for confounders and partner's exposure. Earlier gestational age at delivery (GA) was associated with higher tertiles of urine maternal W (-1.22 days) and paternal U (-1.07 days), but GA was later for higher tertiles of maternal (+1.11 days) and paternal (+1.30 days) blo

The mean paternal age at birth of 80 presumed mutant cases of dominant osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) was significantly higher than that of population controls and remained so after adjusting for maternal age. There was also an increase in mean maternal age (not significant) which disappeared after adjusting for paternal age. No significant increase in maternal or paternal age was found in cases having OI either of a dominant type with an affected parent or of a type (Sillence type III) usually regarded as recessive. We conclude that, as in certain other dominant conditions, the risk of mutant O

A growing literature has documented the mostly deleterious intergenerational consequences of paternal incarceration, but less research has considered heterogeneity in these relationships. In this article, I use data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study (N = 3,065) to estimate the heterogeneous relationship between paternal incarceration and children's problem behaviors (internalizing behaviors, externalizing behaviors, and early juvenile delinquency) and cognitive skills (reading comprehension, math comprehension, and verbal ability) in middle childhood. Taking into account chil

Deletion of the maternal UBE3A allele causes Angelman syndrome (AS); because paternal UBE3A is epigenetically silenced by a long non-coding antisense (UBE3A-ATS) in neurons, this nearly eliminates UBE3A protein in the brain. Reactivating paternal UBE3A holds promise for treating AS. We previously showed topoisomerase inhibitors can reactivate paternal UBE3A, but their therapeutic challenges prompted our search for small molecule unsilencers with a different mechanism of action. Here, we found that (S)-PHA533533 acts through a novel mechanism to significantly increase paternal Ube3a mRNA and UB

To determine the genetic origin of the complete hydatidiform mole, 20 abnormal pregnancies were studied with restriction fragment length polymorphism with five genomic probes: EJ 6.6, beta-globin gene, 3'alpha-hypervariable region, J-Bir, and St14. In the 12 cases of molar pregnancy, pure paternal origin was proved in 11 cases, but both maternal and paternal inheritance were shown in only one case. In the cases with pure paternal origin, all of the restriction fragment length polymorphisms were homozygous, although those of the fathers were heterozygous at 15 loci. In the four cases that mimic

Currently available data on the relationship between the prevalence of isolated congenital malformations and parental age are inconsistent and frequently divergent. We utilised the data from the Polish Registry of Congenital Malformations (PRCM) to accurately assess the interplay between maternal and paternal age in the risk of isolated non-syndromic congenital malformations. Out of 902 452 livebirths we studied 8683 children aged 0-2 years registered in the PRCM. Logistic regression was used to simultaneously adjust the risk estimates for maternal and paternal age. Our data indicated that pat

Exposure to parental abuse and lack of parental affection during childhood are risk factors for adulthood psychopathology. Tendency to engage in positive reappraisal may be a plausible mechanism underlying this relationship. The current study examined if positive reappraisal coping mediated the relationship between maternal/paternal abuse/affection and adulthood generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) symptoms. Participant data (N = 3294) from the Midlife Development in the United States study was collected in three waves, spaced nine years apart. Longitudinal structural equation mediation modeling

Although paternal ethanol (EtOH) abuse has been shown to affect the growth and behavior of offspring, the exact molecular and mechanistic basis remains largely unclear. Methylation alterations in imprinted genes may be related to well-documented teratogenic effects of ethanol. Here we show that chronic paternal ethanol exposure increases the susceptibility to abnormal behavior in offspring through male game epigenetic alteration. In our study, different doses of ethanol (0, 1.1, 3.3 g kg-1 ) were administered intra-gastrically to male mice and decreased sperm motility was found in the highest

Paternally transmitted damage to offspring is recognized as a complex issue. Each parent contributes 23 chromosomes to a child; hence, it is necessary to know the effects of both maternal and paternal pre-and peri-conceptional exposure to drugs on pregnancy outcome. While there are many studies on the effects of maternal drug exposure on pregnancy outcome, literature on paternal exposure is scarce. Of late however, paternal exposure has been receiving increasing attention. We present a brief review on the safety of commonly used drugs in dermatology, focused on retinoids, immune suppressants,

In some autosomal dominant conditions, there is a correlation between new mutations and paternal age, with new mutations arising almost exclusively in the male germ line. To test this hypothesis in Treacher Collins syndrome, we analyzed 22 sporadic cases, determining the parental origin of the pathogenic mutation in 10 informative families. Mutations were found to be of both paternal and maternal origin, without a detectable parental age effect, confirming that a paternal age effect is not universal to all autosomal dominant disorders. A discussion on the parental origin of mutations and pater

GNAS encodes the stimulatory G protein alpha-subunit (Gsα) and its large variant XLαs. Studies have suggested that XLαs is expressed exclusively paternally. Thus, XLαs deficiency is considered to be responsible for certain findings in patients with paternal GNAS mutations, such as pseudo-pseudohypoparathyroidism, and the phenotypes associated with maternal uniparental disomy of chromosome 20, which comprises GNAS. However, a study of bone marrow stromal cells (BMSC) suggested that XLαs could be biallelically expressed. Aberrant BMSC differentiation due to constitutively activating GNAS mutatio

INTRODUCTION: Hydatidiform mole is an abnormal human pregnancy, characterised by absent or abnormal embryonic differentiation, vesicular chorionic villi and trophoblastic hyperplasia. Although the mole phenotype has hereto not been correlated to mutations in the molar genome, the aetiology for hydatidiform moles clearly is genetic: Most molar genomes analysed either have had a relative excess of paternal genome sets relative to maternal genome sets, or a global error in maternally imprinted genes, giving them a "paternal pattern". However it remains yet to be specified which gene(s) in the mol

The aim of the study was to compare effects of maternal and paternal kangaroo care on oxygen consumption, carbon dioxide production, energy expenditure, skin and rectal temperatures, heart and respiratory rates, arterial saturation, and behavioral states. Eleven preterm infants with gestational age of 28 to 31 weeks, birth weight of 560 to 1390 gm, and postnatal age of 8 to 48 days were studied before, during, and after maternal and paternal kangaroo care. Skin temperature (lower leg) increased significantly during both maternal (36.2 +/- 0.9 degrees vs 36.9 +/- 1.2 degrees C) and paternal (36
