Recommendations for promoting the health and well-being of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender adolescents: a position paper of the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine.

Adolescent health care providers frequently care for patients who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgendered (LGBT), or who may be struggling with or questioning their sexual orientation or gender identity. Whereas these youth have the same health concerns as their non-LGBT peers, LGBT teens may face additional challenges because of the complexity of the coming-out process, as well as societal discrimination and bias against sexual and gender minorities. The Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine encourages adolescent providers and researchers to incorporate the impact of these d

Correlates of walking to school and implications for public policies: survey results from parents of elementary school children in Austin, Texas.

Walking can be a healthy, sustainable, and equitable mode of transportation, but is not widely used for children's school travel. This study … relates were parents' and children's positive attitude and regular walking behavior, and supportive peer influences. Of physical environmental factors, the strongest negative correlates were distance and safety concerns, followed by the presence of highways/freeways, convenience stores, office buildings, and bus stops en route. Our findings suggest that society …

Adolescents' transition to self-management of a chronic genetic disorder.

Self-management of chronic illness requires acquisition of self-care skills such as seeking knowledge, adhering to recommendations, practicing healthy behaviors, and life-long self-surveillance. This article describes the core problem and psychosocial processes by which parents transfer, and children take on, the responsibility for managing a chronic genetic condition. Individuals with Marfan syndrome (MFS), their parents, and health care providers were the sources of empirical data. A sample of 108 providers, parents, and individuals with MFS were recruited through a genetics clinic and the N

Anthrax in transit; practical experience and intellectual exchange.

Focusing on three Anglo-American outbreaks of industrial anthrax, this essay engages the question of how local circumstances influenced the transmission of scientific knowledge in the late nineteenth century. Walpole (Massachusetts), Glasgow, and Bradford (Yorkshire) served as important nodes of transnational investigation into anthrax. Knowledge about the morphology and behavior of Bacillus anthracis changed little while in transit between these nodes, even during complex debates about the nature of bacterial morphology, disease causation, and spontaneous generation. Working independently of

The meaning of a multimodal approach for children with ADHD: experiences of service professionals.

BACKGROUND: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a childhood mental disorder characterized by inattention, impulsiveness and overactivity. It is also characterized by heterogeneity and ambiguity. Effective intervention is influenced by these two factors. This pervasive disorder impacts various domains of functioning, including academics, peer relations, familial relationships and self-esteem. A confounding factor is the high rate of comorbidity with diagnoses such as learning disabilities, oppositional defiant disorder or conduct disorder. No one intervention has emerged as maxim

Specifying the relations between affect and heavy alcohol use among young adults.

Current reformulations of the tension reduction hypothesis posit that only a subset of vulnerable individuals are at risk for drinking in response to negative affect. To further specify this model, this study examined the types of mood and social contexts under which affect and alcohol use are associated. Participants were 74 college students who completed repeated assessments of mood, alcohol use, friendship quality, and social support. A complex pattern of findings supported the moderating influences of gender, friendship factors, and the timing of behavior (i.e., weekends vs. weekdays) on t

Adolescent contraception: an update.

Increased adolescent sexual activity in the past decade has resulted in corresponding increases in pregnancy, childbirth, and abortion, as well as a changing spectrum of sexually transmitted diseases. Contraceptive use in this age group remains limited and is subject to developmental, peer, family, and cultural influences. The most appropriate contraceptive methods may differ among adolescents when compared with older parous women based upon such factors as efficacy, availability, cost, side effects, reversibility, and the need for preplanning. This review updates changes in patterns of contra

"We had to learn by trial and error": Perceptions and attitudes of committed adopters of dam-calf contact in the USA and Canada.

There is limited research in North America on alternative rearing systems that allow calves to remain with their dams for extended periods of time, despite cow-calf separation being largely unsupported by the public. While some farms have decided to transition to dam-calf contact from conventional calf-rearing, what motivated these producers to adopt and retain this practice on their operation is unknown. To explore how committed adopters of dam-calf rearing approach this practice, researchers interviewed producers from 12 dairy farms (10 in the USA, 2 in Canada) who rear calves in dam-calf co

Physical activity level and influencing factors in pediatric Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome patients: A case-control study.

This study aimed to evaluate physical activity levels and identify factors influencing physical activity in paediatric Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome patients. The clinical characteristics, arterial stiffness assessed using a non-invasive oscillometric method, and cardiorespiratory fitness measured through cardiopulmonary exercise test were recorded. Physical activity levels using Physical Activity Questionnaire for Older Children (PAQ-C), outcome expectations, perceptions of family support, as well as the barriers reported by participants' parents, were evaluated using standardized ques

Designing tailored Web-based instruction to improve practicing physicians' chlamydial screening rates.

OBJECTIVE: To design an individualized Web-based continuing medical education (CME) program to improve practicing physicians' chlamydial screening rates. DESCRIPTION: Often unrecognized and untreated, chlamydial infections in young women may cause pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility, and ectopic pregnancy and facilitate the acquisition of HIV. The National Committee for Quality Assurance in 2001 reported chlamydia screening rates to be 23.6% for 16-20-year-olds and 18.3% for 21-26-year-olds. In a collaborative project an academic medical center and a large national managed care organizat

Maternal input to 24-month-old children with sex chromosome trisomies.

BACKGROUND: Maternal input plays an important role in influencing linguistic development during the first years of life, and it is evident that mothers adapt their language according to their child's characteristics. Recently, it was demonstrated that maternal input addressed to children with sex chromosome trisomies (SCTs) at 8 months of age is prosodically and functionally different from that addressed to typically developing (TD) peers. AIMS: The study aimed at analysing maternal input at 24 months when the presence of a language delay could be more evident than during the preverbal stage.

"What if someone reads these records and judges me?": fear, legitimacy, and the hidden curriculum in veterinary clinical decision-making.

INTRODUCTION: Spectrum of Care (SpOC) has been promoted as a means of improving access to veterinary care while supporting ethical and sustainable clinical decision-making. Yet many veterinarians who value contextualized, client-centered care continue to experience difficulty incorporating SpOC approaches into everyday practice. While these challenges are often framed as deficits in knowledge, resources, or training, less attention has been paid to the influence of professional culture. METHODS: This qualitative study drew on data collected as part of a mixed-methods evaluation of a SpOC work

Protocol for the development and validation of a driving simulator for evaluating the influence of drugs on driving performance.

INTRODUCTION: Although automobile driving is often necessary in daily life, most package inserts for psychotropic drugs in Japan prohibit patients from driving under the influence of medication. This may be partially because no system to evaluate the influence of drugs on driving performance has been established. Standardized evaluation methods have been established in the Netherlands and the United States, but these cannot be implemented in Japan because of differences in road situations, traffic laws, and ethnicities. Therefore, to establish a method to evaluate the influence of drugs on dri

The microbiome and non-occupational human-animal interactions: a scoping review.

Human-animal interactions may impact the composition of the human microbiome. This can then influence human physical, mental, and social wellbeing. This scoping review synthesizes the literature on the impacts of intentional, non-occupational human-animal interactions on the human microbiome. Six databases (PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Web of Science, CAB Abstracts, and ProQuest Dissertations and Theses) were searched using keywords for human-animal interactions and microbiomes. Database searching resulted in 2,946 publications. Publications were screened according to the following inclusion crit

Faith actors and social norms shifting for adolescent health: A scoping review in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.

Across low-and-middle income countries, adolescents navigate social environments where norms shape their opportunities and life trajectories. Faith actors are deeply embedded within these systems and often influence expectations related to communication, sexuality, reproductive health, and marriage. While faith engagement is widely recognized as important for sustainable change, empirical evidence on how faith actors contribute to social norm change remains limited. This paper presents findings from a 2024 scoping review of peer-reviewed and grey literature (2014-2024) examining how faith acto
