BACKGROUND: Both peritoneal small solute transport and peritoneal protein clearance are closely linked to outcomes in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. However, the associated factors of these two components are not fully understood so far. This study aimed to investigate the association between a panel of systemic and peritoneal inflammatory and angiogenic factors and peritoneal solute transport properties.
METHODS: Stable PD patients in PD center of Renji Hospital, School of Medicine, Shanghai Jiao Tong University were enrolled in present study. Serum and overnight effluent markers includi

Incremental peritoneal dialysis, which has been attracting much attention recently, refers to the initiation of peritoneal dialysis using a modified dialysis regimen that takes into account a patient's residual kidney function. Incremental peritoneal dialysis has certain advantages over standard therapy in terms of reducing costs, limiting dextrose exposure, reducing waste, and perhaps improving outcomes associated with peritoneal dialysis. Implementing an incremental peritoneal dialysis program necessitates an understanding of the basic goals and objectives of peritoneal dialysis therapy in t

Among the recent advancements in Peritoneal Dialysis, the guidelines on the prevention and treatment of peritonitis, published in March 2022 by the International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis (ISPD), are of particular importance. The ISPD periodically updates these guidelines, with the previous update dating back to 2016. Peritonitis, despite its decreased incidence, remains a significant challenge in PD as it continues to be a major cause of morbidity, mortality, and dropout from the modality. The 2022 ISPD guidelines update the previous recommendations and introduce new ones. These recomme…

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is a widely accepted renal replacement therapy for patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Morphological and functional changes occur in the peritoneal membranes (PMs) of patients undergoing long-term PD. Peritoneal fibrosis (PF) is a common PD-related complication that ultimately leads to PM injury and peritoneal ultrafiltration failure. Autophagy is a cellular process of "self-eating" wherein damaged organelles, protein aggregates, and pathogenic microbes are degraded to maintain intracellular environment homeostasis and cell survival. Growing evidence shows th

A remarkable amount of new information has been generated on peritoneal mesothelioma (PeM), ranging from nomenclature changes, including the removal of "malignant" when referring to this neoplasm and the use of the term "tumor" rather than "mesothelioma" to designate the neoplasm formerly known as "well-differentiated papillary mesothelioma", to the acknowledgment that PeMs can be associated with tumor predisposition syndromes or germline mutations. Although the disease is still more frequently seen in caucasian males, PeM is not uncommon in women. In addition, it can represent a diagnostic ch

Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma (MPM) is a rare, life-threatening malignant tumor. We present a report of a rare case of a 67-year-old male patient with MPM and severe abdominal pain, bloating, and bloody ascites as manifestations. The diagnosis was confirmed by cytology of ascites aspiration fluid and further verified by laparoscopic exploratory biopsy. The characteristics of signs and clinical manifestations in this case are less common. As everyone knows, asbestos exposure is usually associated with pleural mesothelioma, but only 6%-10% of malignant mesothelioma cases originate from the p

Encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis (EPS) also known as abdominal cacoon is a rare cause of acute or subacute small bowel obstruction. It is characterized by total or partial encasement of the small bowel within a thick fibrocollagenous membrane which may be formed in response to prolonged, repetitive, and severe insult to the peritoneal mesothelium. This is frequently seen in the setting of peritoneal dialysis. However other causes may include chronic inflammation. We present a case of EPS in a male with infrequent abdominal pain, nausea and fever.

The peritoneum protects the intraabdominal organs. This function is exploited by aggressive cancers originating from organs within the abdomen, resulting in peritoneal metastasis. We discuss genomic variants that may lead to peritoneal metastasis from multiple cancers. Peritoneal malignancies are attributed to epithelial-mesenchymal transition. These metastatic lesions harbor similar genetic mutations to the primary tumor yet may manifest clone-specific aberrations that promote propagation. Peritoneal metastasis are increasingly being treated with surgical resection as an adjunct to radiation,

Encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis (EPS) is a rare but serious complication of peritoneal dialysis. In this review, we describe the clinical picture and histologic changes to the peritoneal membrane that are associated with EPS and provide an update on current diagnosis and management. We also discuss the recent studies that have suggested that the use of more biocompatible solutions containing lower concentrations of glucose degradation product that often are pH neutral in combination with a change in clinical practice (reducing glucose exposure and monitoring peritoneal membrane function) mi

Psammocarcinoma is a rare low-grade serous carcinoma arising either from ovary or peritoneum and is characterized by extensive psammomatous calcifications and invasion of surrounding structures. Prognostically, psammocarcinoma resembles borderline serous tumor and has a much more favorable outcome than the common serous carcinoma of ovary and peritoneum.

Peritoneal dialysis is a dialysis modality used worldwide. Despite offering several advantages, its prevalence in Switzerland in end stage renal disease population is dramatically lower than hemodialysis (7.3% vs 92.7% in 2014) although its incidence has recently progressed. Technically, a catheter is inserted into the Douglas' pouch, enabling dialysate to be infused into the peritoneal cavity. The peritoneum acts as a semi-permeable membrane allowing for the removal of toxic substances and excess water. In the following article we will give an overview of peritoneal dialysis including its tec

Postoperative peritoneal adhesions are common sequelae of abdominal surgery. Acute as well as chronic complications, including bowel obstruction, abdominal pain and infertility can arise from adhesion formation. So far, the only reliable treatment is surgical adhesiolysis, which in turn is accompanied by an increased risk of adhesion recurrence. Despite significant progress in modern perioperative medicine, only limited prophylactic approaches are available and atraumatic surgery is still the most important factor.Current research concepts focus on two major antiadhesion strategies: firstly, t

Extra-axial ependymomas are exceedingly rare neuroectodermal tumors that arise outside the central nervous system. The majority behave in a benign clinical fashion. In this case, an elderly woman developed an intraperitoneal ependymoma that after surgical excision recurred twice over a period of twenty four years. At each presentation, the tumor demonstrated identical histologic appearances with prominent rosettes as well as perivascular pseudorosettes. Immunohistochemistry showed strong positivity for glial fibrilary acidic protein, estrogen receptors, CAM 5.2 and CD99 with weak staining for

Encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis (EPS) is a rare but potentially lethal complication of peritoneal dialysis (PD). Peritoneal tuberculosis is considered an etiologic factor. We report a case of EPS in a 40-year-old man who was switched to hemodialysis because of peritoneal tuberculosis after 2 years of PD. Because of the persistence of gastrointestinal symptoms and cachexia, laparoscopic exploration was performed, which revealed an important thickening of the peritoneal membrane sheathing the intestinal loops. Accordingly, a diagnosis of EPS was made. Anti-tuberculosis treatment associated wi
