The majority of gunshot wounds in the urban pediatric population are inflicted by handguns. This study reviewed the trauma center management of 66 handgun injuries to the upper and lower extremities among 51 children who were aged < or =16 years. As expected, gunshot wounds were more frequent in adolescent males and were usually intentional. About half of the children had police records prior to the gunshot wounds. We set out to determine the lower limits at which canines could reliably detect potential accelerants. The overrepresentation of persons with mental illness in carceral settings has led to justifiable concerns about their wellbeing and the appropriateness of their care. Correctional officers may be the first point of recognition and management for incarcerated persons experiencing mental illness. Acupuncture was used to treat a 51-year-old 'lollipop lady' (school crossing patrol officer), with severe carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) affecting her dominant hand, and co-existing cervical spondylosis. I postulate that her symptoms were work related. She responded well to acupuncture, which provided good symptomatic treatment rather than cure and allowed her to continue working whilst she awaited surgical release.

BACKGROUND: The use of anti-reflection coatings (AR) for spectacle lenses is steadily increasing. These ultra-thin coatings reduce reflections in lenses, increasing light transmittance about 8% (from 91% to 99%).
