Factors shaping user involvement in social and health services in Poland: the perspective of persons with disabilities.

BACKGROUND: The idea of involving citizens in shaping social and health services is not new. Many authors have stated the lack of citizens’ input in the development of these sectors. Different theoretical frameworks on the user perspective exist, but they are often broad and difficult to connect with the presented topic clearly. OBJECTIVE: This paper aims to examine factors influencing the involvement of service users in health and social services in Poland, particularly from the perspective of individuals with disabilities and with chronic mental health conditions. METHODS: The findings prese

Leveraging health infrastructure to optimize HPV vaccination for adolescents in Zambia: Protocol for an implementation study.

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in Zambia, where HIV prevalence is also high (11.3%). HIV heightens the risk of developing and dying from cervical cancer. The human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine can prevent 90% of cervical cancers, and in Zambia is recommended for adolescent girls ages 14-15 years, including those with HIV. Currently they mainly deliver HPV vaccination via school-based campaigns, which may exclude the most vulnerable adolescents-those out-of-school or who irregularly attend. Adolescents living with HIV (ALHIV) are more likely to have these vulne

Lessons learned from the polio eradication initiative in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Ethiopia: analysis of implementation barriers and strategies.

BACKGROUND: Since its inception in 1988, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) has partnered with 200 countries to vaccinate over 2.5 billion children against poliomyelitis. The polio eradication approach has adapted to emerging challenges and diverse contexts. Knowledge assets gained from these experiences can inform implementation of future health programs, but only if efforts are made to systematically map barriers, identify strategies to overcome them, identify unintended consequences, and compare experiences across country contexts. METHODS: A sequential explanatory mixed method

Culture and history in psychiatric diagnosis and practice.

A brief review of the history of Western psychiatry underscores how happenings in Anglo European societies during the early modern and modern era impacted on regional populations in the midst of profound demographic, social and political economic change. Such factors along with cultural conventions created an amalgam of behavior problems: social responses to these under the aegis administrative bodies gave rise to the discipline and profession of psychiatry. Central tenets that we take for granted as facts about psychiatric disorders (e.g., their manifestations, natural history, diagnosis) wer

[Endocrine disruption agents: environment, health, public policies, and the precautionary principle].

The already substantial body of evidence and growing web of suspicions as to the scale and severity of the cascade effects of endocrine disrupters (related to persistent organic pollutants or POPs) on the health of ecosystems and humans have sparked such concern that in June 1998, representatives of 94 countries meeting in Montreal under the aegis of UNEP signed a draft international agreement to phase out the most harmful POPs. Related to particular persistent organic pollutants--toxic semi-volatile and persistent chemical compounds now found everywhere in the environment, such as BPCs, organ

Health Inequalities, Intersectionality, and Justice.

UNLABELLED: Policy Points Population health science that uses large data sets to study health inequalities increasingly draws on intersectionality, the idea that overlapping forms of disadvantage shape health inequalities. This approach is essential to the pursuit of health equity because it provides a more complete and sound evidence base for population health policy. As this approach has gained traction, it has drifted from intersectionality's founding ideas about social power and justice. This Perspective develops a framework of justice for the field that consists of a multidimensional acco

Surrogacy from a reproductive rights and justice perspective: a narrative review.

ABSTRACT: Surrogacy is a form of assisted reproductive technology in which a woman carries a child on behalf of an individual or couple and relinquishes the child following birth. Since its emergence in its contemporary form in the late 1970s, surrogacy has been the subject of ongoing debate and controversy, shaped by developments in scientific research and social discourse. This work proposes a theoretical framework that directly engages with the ethical and practical paradoxes of surrogacy rather than bypassing them. The analysis is grounded in a comprehensive review of 86 scholarly articles

(Re)imagining the Future of Genetic Counseling: A Reflexive Qualitative Analysis of Sociopolitical Power, Cultural Safety, Systemic Racism, and Comparative Practice in the United Kingdom, Aotearoa New Zealand and, Australia.

Genetic counseling is undergoing a rapid transformation as genomic medicine becomes embedded within mainstream healthcare systems. At the same time, the profession is being challenged to respond to systemic racism, colonial legacies, technological change, and evolving expectations regarding equity and justice. Historically, genetic counseling emerged within twentieth-century medical genetics and was influenced by political, social, scientific, and medical forces that included eugenic ideology, values, and practices. The profession has since evolved substantially toward psychosocial, patient-ce

Internet Memes as Drivers of Health Narratives and Infodemics: Integrative Review.

BACKGROUND: Digital media memes have emerged as influential tools in health communication, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. While they offer opportunities for emotional engagement and community resilience, they also act as vectors for health misinformation, contributing to the global infodemic. Despite growing interest in their communicative power, the role of memes in shaping public perception and misinformation diffusion remains underexplored in infodemiology. OBJECTIVE: This integrative review aims to analyze how memes influence emotional, behavioral, and ideological responses to

Characterising the effects of displacement on gender-based violence among women living with HIV in Ukraine: a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Women living with HIV (WLHIV) in conflict zones are at high risk of sexual and physical violence due to instability, stigma and proximity to military personnel. Given sustained ongoing conflict, this study evaluated the relationship between displacement and gender-based violence (GBV), including experiences of sexual violence, abuse by healthcare workers and reproductive coercion among WLHIV in Ukraine. These forms of violence are conceptualised as severe forms of enacted stigma that are downstream outcomes of social, cultural and political norms, as well as social and structural

"I think all of us should have […] much better training in ethics." Ethical challenges in policy making during the COVID-19 pandemic: Results from an interview study with Swiss policy makers and scientists.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic posed many unprecedented challenges to health care systems and public health efforts worldwide. Policy making and science were deeply intertwined, in particular with regard to the justification of health policy measures. In this context, ethical considerations were often at the core of decision-making trade-offs. However, not much is known about the actual ethical challenges encountered by policy makers and scientists involved in policy advice. With this study, we therefore aim to explore the ethical challenges during COVID-19-related political decision-making

Obstacles to the deceased donor transplantation in Pakistan.

INTRODUCTION: Transplantation in many Asian countries is moulded by socioeconomic, religious, cultural and health indicators. In most Asian countries, the living-related donation is the common most organ donation. Due to the limited deceased organ donation, live donor programmes flourished in many Asian countries. Another apparent reason for this tremendous growth of living-related programmes in Asian countries is their larger serving population. Several centres from Asia, including Pakistan and India from Southeast Asia and Egypt in Middle East Asia, on the one hand, have recently emerged as

Impact of war and forced displacement on children's mental health-multilevel, needs-oriented, and trauma-informed approaches.

The infliction of war and military aggression upon children must be considered a violation of their basic human rights and can have a persistent impact on their physical and mental health and well-being, with long-term consequences for their development. Given the recent events in Ukraine with millions on the flight, this scoping policy editorial aims to help guide mental health support for young victims of war through an overview of the direct and indirect burden of war on child mental health. We highlight multilevel, need-oriented, and trauma-informed approaches to regaining and sustaining o

Assistive technology policy: a position paper from the first global research, innovation, and education on assistive technology (GREAT) summit.

Increased awareness, interest and use of assistive technology (AT) presents substantial opportunities for many citizens to become, or continue being, meaningful participants in society. However, there is a significant shortfall between the need for and provision of AT, and this is patterned by a range of social, demographic and structural factors. To seize the opportunity that assistive technology offers, regional, national and sub-national assistive technology policies are urgently required. This paper was developed for and through discussion at the Global Research, Innovation and Education o

Strategies in primary healthcare to implement early identification of risky alcohol consumption: why do they work or not? A qualitative evaluation of the ODHIN study.

BACKGROUND: Screening and brief interventions (SBI) in primary healthcare are cost-effective in risky drinkers, yet they are not offered to all eligible patients. This qualitative study aimed to provide more insight into the factors and mechanisms of why, how, for whom and under what circumstances implementation strategies work or do not work in increasing SBI. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted between February and July 2014 with 40 GPs and 28 nurses in Catalonia, the Netherlands, Poland, and Sweden. Participants were purposefully selected from the European Optimising Deliver

The relation of FIMR programs and other perinatal systems initiatives with maternal and child health activities in the community.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the association of the presence of a fetal and infant mortality review (FIMR) program, other perinatal systems initiative (PSI), or both in a community with the performance of essential maternal and child health (MCH) services by local health departments (LHDs). METHODS: Data were obtained from telephone interviews with professionals from LHDs across the United States. Logistic regression was used to estimate the odds of a LHD conducting each essential MCH service in communities with and without FIMR programs or with and without PSIs, adjusted for geographic area. Heroin-assisted treatment in Switzerland: a case study in policy change.

BACKGROUND: Switzerland introduced a pragmatic national drug policy when the former conservative abstinence-orientated politics proved unable to cope with an escalating number of users and related negative consequences for public health and public order. The high visibility of 'needle parks' and the size of the acquired immune deficiency disorder (AIDS) epidemic called for a new approach and for national leadership. AIMS: To describe the intentions, the process and the results of setting up the new treatment approach of prescribing heroin to treatment resistant heroin addicts, as an example o
