INTRODUCTION: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a chronic psychiatric condition associated with significant distress and dysfunction. While worldwide estimates of prevalence range from 3.9% to 24%, little research has been conducted to identify the prevalence of PTSD in the general population of India. This study analyzes data from the National Mental Health Survey 2015-2016, a comprehensive epidemiological study of mental health disorders in India, to explore the unique characteristics and prevalence of PTSD in the Indian population.

BACKGROUND: Infective endocarditis (IE) is a severe disease requiring lengthy hospitalisation. Little is known about patients' recovery after IE. The aims of this study in IE patients were; (i) to describe mortality, readmission, self-reported health and rehabilitation up to 1year post-discharge, (ii) to examine associations between self-reported health and readmission, and (iii) to investigate predictors of readmission and mortality.
METHODS: All adults treated for IE in Denmark, January-June 2011 (N=347), were followed in registers. Eligible individuals (n=209) were invited to participate i

BACKGROUND: Self-management has become increasingly popular in the management of chronic diseases. There are many different self-management models. Meta analyses of arthritis self-management have concluded that it is difficult to recommend any one program in preference to another due to inconsistencies in the study designs used to evaluate different programs. The Stanford Arthritis Self-Management Program (ASMP), most commonly delivered by trained lay leaders, is a generic program widely used for people with rheumatological disorders. We have developed a more specific program expressly for peop

BACKGROUND: Peritonsillitis, including peritonsillar abscess and cellulitis, is a common deep neck infection often considered a complication of pharyngotonsillitis. However, population-based data on patient characteristics, clinical presentation, and care pathways are limited.
METHODS: We conducted a population-based registry study in Region Kronoberg, Sweden (2012-2016), including all episodes of peritonsillitis and pharyngotonsillitis diagnosed in primary health care (PHC) and hospitals. New episodes were defined as diagnoses separated by ≥ 30 days. Patient characteristics, recent pharyngot

Considering the fact that mental health illnesses increase with age, and that shoulder arthroplasty procedures are often indicated in the older population, exploring the relationship between mental health and shoulder arthroplasty outcomes can have pivotal implications for shoulder surgeons and patients worldwide. The literature has shown that patients with poor mental health report lower patient-reported outcomes, higher peri-operative complications (such as anemia, infection, delirium, and others), lengthier hospital stays, and higher readmission rates than the normal patient. Employing a ho

The escalating awareness of heat-related risks and the associated imperative to enhance preparedness strategies at various levels has spurred a growing emphasis on disseminating knowledge about heat vulnerability. These efforts aim to equip diverse stakeholders with practical heat planning and forecasting tools. The success of these communication initiatives hinges on understanding the nuanced perceptions of risk and the priority assigned to addressing heat as a health risk. This paper delves explicitly into the unhoused population's risk perceptions and coping strategies. Acknowledged as one

Invasive meningococcal disease is challenging for public health, mainly when it manifests with sudden changes in incidence, serogroups and hypervirulent clones that spread in the population, causing great alarm due to its sequelae and often fatal course, a situation that occurred in Chile, starting at week 26 of the year 2012. To face this scenario, an organization of multidisciplinary teams was required, called W-135 Action Plan in Chile, which included sanitary alerts, education, reinforcement of the epidemiological surveillance of suspicious cases, immediate diagnosis through state-of-the-a

Phosphocalcic metabolism disorders often complicate chronic kidney disease (CKD) and worsen as kidney function declines, with a consequence on bone structural integrity. The risk of fracture exceeds that of the normal population in both patients with pre-dialysis CKD and end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The increasing incidence of CKD, the high mortality rate induced by hip fracture, the decreased quality of life and economic burden of fragility fracture make the renal bone disorders a major problem of public health around the world. Optimizing bone health in CKD patients should be a priority.

HIV infection is presented in the chapters of the Clinical Protocol and Therapeutic Guidelines for Comprehensive Care for People with Sexually Transmitted Infections, published by the Brazilian Ministry of Health in 2020. Health professionals and managers must learn the signs and symptoms of HIV infection and know how to diagnose it to provide appropriate treatment and reduce complications. HIV infection has become a chronic disease. Its treatment includes addressing common comorbidities such as arterial hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia, in addition to cardiac risk assessment, cancer p

Diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia (FTD) in the mental health setting and issues pertaining to longitudinal care of this population in a specialist clinic are reviewed. FTD is often misdiagnosed as a psychiatric disorder, most commonly as a mood disorder. FTD has features that overlap with those of major depression, mania, obsessive-compulsive disorder and schizophrenia. We describe these features and how to differentiate FTD from these psychiatric disorders. This paper also describes practical issues in the management of FTD, specifically the issues that clinicians, patients and their famil

This article reviews both the global and Kenyan tuberculosis (TB) situations and gives a manager's perspective of the management of a national TB control program with limited resources. It demonstrates how complex it can be to manage a control program with a 500% increase in case load and a 60% decline in real per capita health expenditure during the last 20 y. The picture is complicated even further by a high prevalence of TB among the country's nomadic population inhabiting the arid and semi-arid parts of the country. Acceptable treatment results are achieved through a combination of appropr

This retrospective propensity score-matched cohort study examined the associations of multidisciplinary team (MDT)-based integrated lifestyle management with glycemic, psychological, behavioral, nutritional, and screening-related outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Clinical data were collected from 133 hospitalized patients with T2DM between June 1, 2024, and December 31, 2024. After 1:1 nearest-neighbor propensity score matching (PSM), 130 patients were included: 65 in the MDT-based management group and 65 in the conventional management group. The primary outcome was th

OBJECTIVE: To compare labour outcomes using aggressive or expectant management protocols.
DESIGN: Randomised trial.
SETTING: Pretoria Academic Complex, South Africa. It serves an indigent urban population.
POPULATION: Healthy nulliparous women in active labour, at term, with a health singleton pregnancy and cephalic presentation.
METHODS: The women were randomised to either aggressive (n = 344) or expectant (n = 350) management protocols. Aggressive management entailed using a single line partogram, a vaginal examination every two hours and use of an oxytocin infusion if the line was cross

BACKGROUND: Given the potential value of self-management support programs for people with chronic diseases, it is vital to understand how they influence participants' health attitudes and behaviours. The Stanford Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (CDSMP), the most well-known and widely studied such program, is funded in many provinces and jurisdictions throughout Canada. However, there is little published evidence on its impact in the Canadian health-care system. We studied participants' reactions and perceived impacts of attending the Stanford program in one Ontario health region so we

Spinal cord injury (SCI) results in an array of cardiometabolic complications, with obesity being the most common component risk of cardiometabolic disease (CMD) in this population. Recent Consortium for Spinal Cord Medicine Clinical Practice Guidelines for CMD in SCI recommend physical exercise as a primary treatment strategy for the management of CMD in SCI. However, the high prevalence of obesity in SCI and the pleiotropic nature of this body habitus warrant strategies for tailoring exercise to specifically target obesity. In general, exercise for obesity management should aim primarily to

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a prevalent condition, recognized as a sentinel marker of cardiovascular disease. Epidemiological and mechanistic evidence link ED to cardiovascular risk, with a prominent role of low-grade inflammation, endothelial dysfunction and atherosclerosis. ED might serve as an early indicator of subclinical vascular disease, and diagnostic strategies, including coronary artery calcium scoring and echocardiography, can be considered to enhance risk stratification. Management approaches that integrate sexual and cardiometabolic health are beneficial to improve care in this a

Cirrhosis affects millions of U.S. adults and costs the U.S. health care system upward of $6 billion annually. Cirrhosis is underrecognized, and the only cure is transplantation. Complications, including bleeding, infection, ascites, and renal injury, contribute to high rates of hospitalization, readmission, and mortality in this population. Evidence-based practices and guidelines offer quality recommendations for clinicians, but many of these guidelines have changed recently. This article provides an update on the current guidelines for the inpatient management of cirrhosis.

BACKGROUND: The complexity of the hepatitis B natural history and its prevalence in specific populations in Australia challenges the capacity of the health system to deliver health care effectively to affected people. This study explores the challenges in delivering health care to people with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) in Australia.
METHODS: We conducted a grounded theory based qualitative study in which data were gathered from 70 in-depth interviews with government program officers, clinicians and health and community workers across Australia, and four focus group discussions with 40 health a
