INTRODUCTION: This case study was part of a larger programme of research in Alberta that aims to develop an evidence-based model to optimize centralized intake province-wide to improve access to care. A centralized intake model places all referred patients on waiting lists based on severity and then directs them to the most appropriate provider or service. Our research focused on an in-depth assessment of two well-established models currently in place in Alberta to 1) enhance our understanding of the roles and responsibilities of staff in current intake processes, 2) identify workforce issues

BACKGROUND: This is a study of service provider perceptions of the place, role and practices of CHWs in a four-year, large-scale private sector funded, public service ICT-enabled COPC intervention with rural and remote mining communities. Like all South African communities, apart from large mining house employees and some contractors, most people use available public healthcare services and private traditional as well as limited allopathic private sector providers. In addition to the limitations of facility centred primary healthcare and a fragmented health care system, the many negative healt

BACKGROUND: During their pre-clinical years, medical students are given the opportunity to practice clinical skills with simulated patients. During these formative objective structured clinical encounters (OSCEs), tutors from various backgrounds give feedback on students' history taking, physical exam, and communication skills. The aim of the study was to evaluate whether the content and process of feedback varied according to the tutors' profile.
METHODS: During 2013, all 2nd and 3rd year medical students and tutors involved in three formative OSCEs were asked to fill in questionnaires, and

BACKGROUND: MLS curricula often focus on factual theory and skills-based competencies. Evolving practitioners also need professional reflection skills to continually improve. The problem giving rise to the need for this intervention was that learners were not reflecting on their practicum experiences beyond thinking of tasks completed. The purpose of this qualitative case was to explore learner insight that arose from writing professional reflections across clinical practica during a university-based MLS program. Two elaborating research questions asked what metacognitive insights MLS learners

INTRODUCTION: While patients with neglected tropical diseases may present for care in the United States, they are encountered so infrequently that medical professionals may have little chance of being exposed to these illnesses during training. This simulation on dermatological presentations of neglected tropical diseases was used as a teaching tool for multifaceted topics including disease management, interdisciplinary collaboration, and sociocultural issues. To achieve this goal, we created four cases with patients demonstrating clinical and dermatological presentations.

BACKGROUND: Hip arthroscopy for femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) in professional athletes is associated with significant improvements in postoperative pain and function and a return-to-sport (RTS) rate >80%. However, RTS rate after hip arthroscopy for FAI in professional athletes with borderline dysplasia is unknown.
PURPOSE: To assess RTS rates exclusively in professional athletes with borderline dysplasia after hip arthroscopy for treatment of FAI.
STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3.
METHODS: A total of 40 professional and Olympic athletes (42 hips) with borderline dysplas

INTRODUCTION: Understanding the psychological processes underlying anxiety in sport professionals represents a central issue in sport psychology. Although previous research has documented differences in stress and anxiety across sport roles, less attention has been devoted to examining the potential explanatory pathways through which these differences emerge, particularly within specific sport contexts such as football. The present study aimed to examine whether perceived stress mediates the relationship between professional role and trait anxiety in football coaches and referees.

BACKGROUND: Palliative care offers solace, mitigates pain, and enhances quality of life. However, individuals with mental diseases have inadequate access to palliative care and encounter various barriers during the process. As the need for palliative care is expected to rise significantly in the future, palliative care must be considered a global health priority for healthcare professionals to upgrade care quality. This study aims to synthesize qualitative evidence on healthcare professionals' experience of providing palliative care for patients with mental disorders, so as to identify relevan

BACKGROUND: Older adults at the emergency department (ED) with fall-related injuries are at risk of repeated falls. National guidelines state that the ED is responsible for initiating fall preventive care. A transmural fall-prevention care pathway (TFCP) at the ED can guide patients to tailored interventions. In this study, we investigated the facilitators and barriers for the implementation of the TFCP for older adults following a fall-related ED visit from the perspectives of patients and healthcare professionals.

BACKGROUND: Saudi Arabia's Health Sector Transformation Program (SHSTP), introduced under Vision 2030, aims to improve health system performance while increasing the participation of Saudi nationals in the healthcare workforce. Although expatriate healthcare professionals continue to play a central role in service delivery, little is known about how workforce reform is experienced and governed within mixed Saudi-expatriate healthcare settings during this period of transformation.
METHODS: This paper presents a secondary analysis of data collected as part of a broader doctoral study examining

BACKGROUND: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a public health problem. Interprofessional collaboration and health promotion interventions such as exercise training, education, and behaviour change are cost effective, have a good effect on health status, and are recommended in COPD treatment guidelines. There is a gap between the guidelines and the healthcare available to people with COPD. The aim of this study was to increase the understanding of what shapes the provision of primary care services to people with COPD and what healthcare is offered to them from the perspective of h

OBJECTIVE: To explore the attitudes, facilitators and barriers in providing oral care for inpatients with dysphagia post-stroke as perceived by healthcare professionals.
BACKGROUND: Dysphagia is a common complication of stroke and is associated with a higher incidence of aspiration pneumonia, malnutrition and dehydration. In the acute phase of stroke recovery, a dental professional is not usually part of the multidisciplinary team caring for the patient and oral care is the responsibility of the healthcare professionals in the stroke unit. There is a lack of high-quality evidence to demonstra

Background: The Mental Capacity Act (2005) of England and Wales described in statute a test to determine whether a person lacked the "mental capacity" to make a particular decision. No large-scale survey has explored experiences of capacity assessment across professional groups. Methods: We administered an opportunistic self-report questionnaire survey of professionals who undertake capacity assessments in England and Wales (n= 611). Topics of interest included; how often and where capacity assessment took place, self-ratings of competency and challenges experienced in assessment, use of psych

Italy remains one of the lowest-ranking Western European countries in terms of rights and protections for transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) individuals, with serious consequences for equitable healthcare access. In response to these disparities, and thanks to the initiative and support of the advocacy group Salute Donna Odv Salute Uomo, a multidisciplinary team organised a series of public conferences in Pavia and Milan in 2024. These events brought together healthcare professionals, researchers, LGBTQIA+ organisations, and patient advocates to define practical strategies for more inclusive

On March 4, 2021, OSLER Kingston and KHealth, student-run organizations at Queen's Faculty of Health Sciences, hosted a two-hour-long virtual interprofessional case competition called "OSLER x KHealth IPR Case Competition: Homelessness," focusing on housing insecurity and homelessness. This event demonstrated that integrating interprofessional education (IPE) competencies into educational experiences of health professional students is feasible to organize and implement while also being valuable. Students who participated found IPE to be helpful for their learning. Consequently, we encourage me
