Dosimetric Effect of Thymus on Radiation-Induced Lymphopenia in Breast Cancer Patients Who Received Adjuvant Radiotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Radiation-induced lymphopenia (RIL), particularly severe RIL (G3+), significantly impacts cancer outcomes. This retrospective study aimed to determine the role of irradiation dose to the thymus on RIL in breast cancer (BC) patients who received adjuvant radiotherapy (RT). METHODS: BC patients who received adjuvant RT in 2019 and had available complete blood count data were included. RIL was defined according to CTCAE v5.0 criteria. Logistic regression identified thymic dosimetric and clinical parameters linked to G3+ RIL, ROC analysis determined optimal protective thresholds, and

A study on effects of cell phone tower-emitted non-ionizing radiations in an Allium cepa test system.

Considering enormous growth in population, technical advancement, and added reliance on electronic devices leading to adverse health effects, in situ simulations were made to evaluate effects of non-ionizing radiations emitted from three cell phone towers (T1, T2, and T3) of frequency bands (800, 1800, 2300 MHz), (900, 1800, 2300 MHz), and (1800 MHz), respectively. Five sites (S1-S5) were selected near cell phone towers exhibiting different power densities. The site with zero power density was considered as control. Effects of radiations were studied on morphology; protein content; antioxidant

Nicaraven Exerts a Limited Effect on Radiation-Induced Inhibition of Tumor Growth in a Subcutaneous Murine Tumor Model.

Nicaraven selectively protects normal tissue from radiation-induced injury. To further develop the clinical application of nicaraven for mitigating the side effects of cancer radiotherapy, we investigated the potential effect of nicaraven administration in radiation-induced inhibition of tumor growth. A subcutaneous tumor model was established in mice by the injection of Lewis lung cancer cells at the back of the chest. X-ray radiation was delivered to the thoracic area and different doses of nicaraven (0, 20, 50, 100 mg/kg) were administrated intraperitoneally pre- or post-irradiation. The tu

Fruits and their phytochemicals in mitigating the ill effects of ionizing radiation: review on the existing scientific evidence and way forward.

Although helpful in treating cancer, exposure to ionizing radiation can sometimes cause severe side effects, negating its benefit. In addition to its use in clinics, a nontoxic radioprotective agent can also be beneficial in occupational settings where humans are occupationally exposed for prolonged periods to low doses of radiation. Scientific studies using laboratory animals have shown that the fruits Aegle marmelos, Capsicum annuum, Citrus aurantium, Citrullus lanatus, Crataegus microphylla, Eugenia jambolana, Emblica officinalis, Garcinia kola, Grewia asiatica, Hippophae rhamnoides, Malus

Multifunctional nanoparticle potentiates the in situ vaccination effect of radiation therapy and enhances response to immune checkpoint blockade.

Radiation therapy (RT) activates an in situ vaccine effect when combined with immune checkpoint blockade (ICB), yet this effect may be limited because RT does not fully optimize tumor antigen presentation or fully overcome suppressive mechanisms in the tumor-immune microenvironment. To overcome this, we develop a multifunctional nanoparticle composed of polylysine, iron oxide, and CpG (PIC) to increase tumor antigen presentation, increase the ratio of M1:M2 tumor-associated macrophages, and enhance stimulation of a type I interferon response in conjunction with RT. In syngeneic immunologically

Effect of focused protocol on reducing radiation dose for children who require computed tomography for suspected appendicitis.

BACKGROUND: Despite efforts to incorporate ultrasound into the evaluation of children for appendicitis, computed tomography (CT) is often used to aid in its diagnosis. CT scans, however, expose children to a considerable amount of radiation. In 2017, our institution began using a height-based Focused CT protocol for children with suspected appendicitis in need of CT. OBJECTIVE: To compare the radiation dose received by children with suspected appendicitis who underwent a Standard CT of the abdomen and pelvis (CTAP) with that of a Focused CT. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of chi

The effect of hyperbaric oxygen therapy on bone macroscopy, composition and biomechanical properties after ionizing radiation injury.

BACKGROUND: Radiotherapy used in tumor treatment compromises vascularization of bone tissue. Hyperbaric oxygenation (HBO) increases oxygen availability and improves vascularization, minimizing the deleterious effects of ionizing radiation (IR). Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate HBO therapy effect on bone macroscopy, composition and biomechanical properties after IR damage. METHODS: Twenty male Wistar rats weighing 300 ± 20 g (10 weeks of age) were submitted to IR (30 Gy) to the left leg, where the right leg was not irradiated. After 30 days, ten animals were submitted to HBO th

The Radioprotective Effect of Combination of Melatonin and Metformin on Rat Duodenum Damage Induced by Ionizing Radiation: A Histological Study.

BACKGROUND: Radiation toxicity is one of the major concerns for patients with gastrointestinal cancers that undergo radiotherapy. Duodenum is one of the most radiosensitive parts of gastrointestinal system that may be exposed to a high dose of radiation during radiotherapy for some cancers. The development or identification of appropriate radioprotectors with less toxicity is an interesting aim in radiobiology for clinical radiotherapy applications. In the present study, we aimed to evaluate the radioprotective effect of melatonin and metformin combination in rat's duodenum. In addition, we co

Energy Coupling of Laser Radiation on AISI 304 Stainless Steel: Effect of High Temperatures and Surface Oxidation.

The industrial application of laser materials processing methods is still far ahead of research into the physical phenomena occurring during these processes. In particular, the effect of high temperatures on the energy coupling of laser irradiation of metals is poorly understood. However, most processes in laser materials treatment involve temperatures above the melting point or even cause evaporation. This study therefore evaluates the effect of high temperatures on the energy coupling efficiency of stainless steel experimentally for three typical laser wavelengths (515 nm, 1.07 µm, 10.6 µm).
