INTRODUCTION: Perianal giant condyloma acuminatum is a rare clinical condition related to human papillomavirus infection and characterized by a circumferential, exophytic, cauliflower-like mass with an irregular warty surface localized in the anal region.

Cavernous haemangioma of the rectum is an uncommon cause of rectal bleeding. Initial diagnosis is often elusive because of lack of awareness. For accurate diagnosis, investigations such as endoscopy, plain X-ray of the abdomen, barium enema and selective angiography of the inferior mesenteric artery are required. Complete surgical excision of the haemangioma and colo-anal sleeve anastomosis is the most favoured operative procedure to eradicate the disease. We report a case of cavernous haemangioma of the rectum and discuss its salient clinical features, investigations and management.

Six adult patients were treated for tumors of the retrorectal space from 1975 to 1990 at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. All were female; ages ranged from 19 to 64 (mean, 37.8) years. Fifty five postoperative preparations were studied morphologically after radical surgery for rectal cancer. The distal intramural spread of adenocarcinoma was noted in 18.5 per cent. Orthograde lymphnodes were involved in 43.1%, retrograde ones - in 18%. The tumor growth in perirectal cellular tissue was manifested mainly in the area of the principal tumor. The safe level of rectum cutting is 4.5cm down the tumor. It is recommended to take into a careful consideration the limits of intra- and extramural spread of tumor for the performance of sphincter-preserving operations.
