Cardiovascular autonomic reflexes were evaluated in 13 male subjects affected by Multiple Symmetric Lipomatosis (MSL) and the results were compared with those obtained in 13 age-matched male controls and in 16 male heavy drinkers matched with the MSL group for age and alcohol intake. The offspring of rats fed a diet containing 10% (v/v) of ethanol were tested for developmental differences from controls on a variety of maturational events and reflexes. Eight patients with dystrophia myotonica (Steinert) were studied. They all had myotonia and pathological EMG and in some cases other signs of the disease. The 50% relaxation times of the stapedius reflex were significantly prolonged compared with a control group of 40 healthy, young subjects with normal hearing and normal stapedius reflex thresholds. The optic facial reflex (ofr) has been studied in a group of subjects affected by multiple sclerosis (ms) and compared with the trigemino-facial reflex (tfr) as well as clinical data. From the literature it appears that the afferent pathway of the ofr, after the optic chiasma crosses the midbrain tegmentum and from there goes directly to the pons. Compression of the trachea by an anomalous innominate artery in association with reflex apnea is a frequent cause of respiratory arrest in infants. Loss of vestibulo-ocular reflexes occurred in two patients with acute supratentorial lesions who received therapeutic doses of anticonvulsant drugs. There was no clinical or angiographic evidence of focal brain-stem damage. Absence of vestibulo-ocular reflexes is attributed to a combination of acute cerebral damage and anticonvulsant drugs. The loss of these reflexes in patients with acute cerebral lesions cannot be interpreted as evidence of irreversible brain-stem injury.
