[The participation of the neostriatal cholinergic system in the differentiation of acoustic signals in dogs].

In chronic experiments on six dogs the influence was studied of micro-injections of choline agonist carbocholine (0.05-0.2 mkg) and of blocker of choline receptors atropine (40 mkg) in the caudate nucleus head of the left and right hemispheres on realization of instrumental defensive reflexes, connected with the maintenance of definite posture and on differentiation of signals in defensive situation. It has been shown that the cholinergic system of the neostriatum participated in realization of both the motor and sensory mechanisms in connection with the realization of motor responses to defen

Endolymphatic shunt: an evaluation by test results.

Failure in the endolymphatic shunt operation for Meniere's disease is reportedly 30% or more. The fact that many patients have relief from their symptoms following this surgery offers validity to the procedure. Pure tone audiograms and sinusoidal harmonic acceleration (rotary chair or rotary test, RT) were used concurrently to evaluate end-results of this operation in 31 patients with Meniere's disease. RT shows parameters of phase and labyrinthine preponderance (LP) calculated by a computer. LP was determined by separately integrating the total slow-phase output of the vestibulo-ocular reflex

Unilateral internuclear ophthalmoplegia. The lack of inhibitory involvement in medial rectus muscle activity.

Inability to adduct the left eye beyond the midline was found in a patient after brain stem infarction. Pursuit movements, refixation saccades, and the vestibulo-ocular reflex were restricted to the temporal hemifield. Only near convergence led to an adduction of 15 degrees in the left eye. Nasally directed saccades were slow, and temporally directed saccades showed glissadic back-drift. Electromyography revealed a lack of burst activity in the left medial rectus; however, inhibition of the left (homolateral) and the right (contralateral) medial rectus muscles during off-saccades and in off-po

Anaesthetic considerations in idiopathic orthostatic hypotension and the Shy-Drager syndrome.

Orthostatic hypotension due to autonomic failure may occur secondary to systemic disease states (notably diabetes) or as a disease entity in its own right with a variable degree of neurological involvement that has resulted in a confused classification. The diagnosis, classification and treatment of these latter forms of orthostatic hypotension is reviewed. The pathology is in the central and efferent autonomic pathway, resulting in a disordered baro-receptor reflex, postural hypotension, abnormal responses to tilting and the Valsalva manoeuvre, an inappropriately fixed heart rate and other au

Local thermal stimulation relaxes hypertonic anal sphincter: evidence of somatoanal reflex.

PURPOSE: Although it is generally believed that warm perineal baths reduce pain resulting from anal fissure, complicated hemorrhoids, or anal surgery, the exact mechanisms remain unclear. Because hypertonicity of the internal anal sphincter contributes to increasing pain in these conditions, it has been postulated that warm perineal baths could help to relax the anal sphincter, hence reducing pain. It is our purpose to demonstrate response of the anal sphincter to local thermal stimulation via a somatoanal reflex. METHODS: Continuous anorectal manometry tracings were obtained from 15 healthy

Are 5-HT1A receptors involved in the control of reflex bradycardia induced by intracoronary injection of contrast medium in humans?

Transient vagal bradycardia occurring during coronary arteriography (CA) immediately following intracoronary injection of ionic contrast medium is believed to be a component of the von Bezold-Jarisch reflex (BJ). Data obtained from experimental animals using buspirone (BSP) and other 5-HT1A receptor ligands suggest that these serotonergic receptors modulate the excitability of cardiac vagal motoneurones (CVM). This is a preliminary investigation of the possible effects of BSP in altering the bradycardia of patients submitted to CA for diagnostic purposes. Patients were divided into two age- an

Stimulatory Effect of 5-Hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) on Rat Capsaicin-Sensitive Lung Vagal Sensory Neurons via Activation of 5-HT3 Receptors.

5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) is an inflammatory mediator known to be released in lung. Capsaicin-sensitive lung vagal (CSLV) afferents function as a primary sensor for detecting chemical stimuli and produce consequent reflexes during lung inflammation. To characterize the effect of 5-HT on CSLV afferents, responses of cardiorespiratory reflexes and single-unit C-fiber afferents to right-atrial injections of 5-HT were investigated in anesthetized Sprague-Dawley rats. Bolus injection of 5-HT (8 μg/kg) caused an immediate augmented breath and apnea, accompanied by hypotension and bradycardia. These

Nonlanguage disorders of speech reflect complex neurologic apparatus.

The mute or nearly mute patient who is alert and has good understanding of speech and a right hemiparesis could have Broca's aphasia, akinesia of speech (transcortical motor aphasia), or aphemia. The patient who has Broca's aphasia does not write well, and his speech does not improve greatly with repetition. The speech of a patient with akinesia of speech improves with repetition. The aphemic patient writes normally, but his speech does not improve with repetition. The mute patient whose eyes are open but who is poorly responsive and moves little or not at all could be an akinetic mute (with e

[Paratrigeminal epidermoid originated in the meckel's cave (author's transl)].

We have reported a case of paratrigeminal epidermoid originated in the Meckel's cave. A 30 years old man was admitted to the department of neurosurgery with chief complaints of continuous right facial pain and numbness of entire right side of the face of three years duration. The positive neurological findings were hypesthesia over the distribution of the right trigeminal nerve, absence of the right corneal reflex and nystagmus on left lateral gaze. Caloric response was absent on the right side, however the audiogram showed normal. Cerebrospinal fluid examination was within normal limit. Elect

Peripherally located type I vestibular hair cells are required for several motor behaviors and stimulus-evoked brainstem neural responses in adult mice.

The mammalian vestibular system has two types of sensory receptors (hair cells), type I and type II. Understanding the roles of type I and II hair cells in the vestibular system's control of motor behaviors is difficult because most primary vestibular neurons receive inputs from both hair cell types. To test if type I hair cells are required for motor behaviors, we ablated them from peripheral zones of vestibular epithelia in young adult (3-6 months) Fbxo2CreERT2::Rosa26DTA (experimental) mice of both sexes, then examined motor behaviors and brainstem neuronal responses. Over 90% of peripheral

[A 62-year-old man with multiple cranial nerve palsies on the right side and a pelvic mass].

We report a 62-year-old man with a pelvic mass, who developed multiple cranial nerve palsies on the right side. He was well until the summer of 1977 when he developed a numb sensation in the sacral region. In the next year, a huge tumor was found in the sacral area in another hospital. Most of the tumor was resected at that time. Post-operative course was uneventful. In July 1988, there was an onset of weakness in his legs, gait disturbance, and dysuria. Myelography at the above hospital revealed a complete block at the seventh thoracic level. He was treated by laminectomy and post-operative r

Vagotomy blunts cardiorespiratory responses to vagal afferent stimulation via pre- and postsynaptic effects in the nucleus tractus solitarii.

Viscerosensory information travels to the brain via vagal afferents, where it is first integrated within the brainstem nucleus tractus solitarii (nTS), a critical contributor to cardiorespiratory function and site of neuroplasticity. We have shown that decreasing input to the nTS via unilateral vagus nerve transection (vagotomy) induces morphological changes in nTS glia and reduces sighs during hypoxia. The mechanisms behind post-vagotomy changes are not well understood. We hypothesized that chronic vagotomy alters cardiorespiratory responses to vagal afferent stimulation via blunted nTS neuro

[A case of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis presenting with circulatory collapse during artificial respiration].

A 71-year-old man developed dysarthria and difficulty of swallowing in December 1997. He was diagnosed as having the bulbar type of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). In November 1998, he was admitted to our hospital to undergo treatment for bulbar palsy and respiratory discomfort. In January 1999, ventilatory support (synchronous intermittent mandatory ventilation) during sleep at night was initiated. Severe progressive hypotension and loss of consciousness were observed soon after the start of artificial respiration, and both symptoms disappeared after artificial respiration was discontinu

Megarectum.

Evaluation of the rectum by barium enema does not correlate well with rectometrographic studies and is not predictive of bowel function. The purpose of the present study was to describe clinical and functional data in patients with chronic idiopathic constipation, where a megarectum was diagnosed by a rectometrogram. Among 355 patients who underwent rectal elasticity studies, 35 were found to have a megarectum (maximum tolerable volume above 320 ml in women and 440 in men) for which no specific etiology was recognized. They, and a group of 11 healthy controls who were not sensitive to stress,

Hirayama's disease: an Italian single center experience and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Hirayama's disease (HD), is a benign, self-limited, motor neuron disease, characterized by asymmetric weakness and atrophy of one or both distal upper extremities. In the present study we report the clinical, electrophysiological and MRI features of a group of Italian patients, with review of the literature. Moreover we propose an optimized MRI protocol for patients with suspected or diagnosed HD in order to make an early diagnosis and a standardized follow up. METHODS: Eight patients with clinical suspicion of Hirayama disease underwent evaluation between January 2007 and Novembe

Developmental Vitamin D Deficiency Produces Behavioral Phenotypes of Relevance to Autism in an Animal Model.

Emerging evidence suggests that gestational or developmental vitamin D (DVD) deficiency is associated with an increased risk of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). ASD is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impairments in social interaction, lack of verbal and non-verbal communications, stereotyped repetitive behaviors and hyper-activities. There are several other clinical features that are commonly comorbid with ASD, including olfactory impairments, anxiety and delays in motor development. Here we investigate these features in an animal model related to ASD-the DVD-deficient rat. Compa

Delayed neuromotor recovery and increased memory acquisition dysfunction following experimental brain trauma in mice lacking the DNA repair gene XPA.

OBJECT: This study investigates the outcome after traumatic brain injury (TBI) in mice lacking the essential DNA repair gene xeroderma pigmentosum group A (XPA). As damage to DNA has been implicated in neuronal cell death in various models, the authors sought to elucidate whether the absence of an essential DNA repair factor would affect the outcome of TBI in an experimental setting. METHODS: Thirty-seven adult mice of either wild-type (n = 18) or XPA-deficient ("knock-out" [n = 19]) genotype were subjected to controlled cortical impact experimental brain trauma, which produced a focal brain

Cutaneomeningospinal Angiomatosis (Cobb Syndrome) in a Young Patient.

Cobb Syndrome (Spinal Arteriovenous Metameric Syndrome 1-31 (SAMS 1-31)) is a rare, non-hereditary disorder. Approximately 100 cases of CS have been described to date. The actual incidence may be much higher since only symptomatic patients were documented. In particular, post mortem studies suggest a possibly higher incidence of this syndrome. The main clinical manifestations of this syndrome include skin stains of vascular nature on the torso, in combination with spinal vascular malformations localized in one and the same metameric or spinal segment. A rare diagnosis of this syndrome in patie

[Study on the innate immune regulatory mechanism of transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation in sleep-deprived rats based on TLR4/MyD88/NF-κB signaling pathway].

OBJECTIVES: To observe the effect of transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) on the innate immune function of sleep-deprived rats, so as to explore its possible molecular mechanisms underlying improvement of sleep deprivation. METHODS: Twenty-four SD rats were randomly divided into control, sleep deprivation model, TEAS and sham TEAS groups, with 6 rats in each group. The sleep deprivation model was established by using the modified multi-platform aqueous environment sleep restriction method. TEAS (2 Hz/100 Hz, 2 mA) was applied to "Beixin Tiaoshen Wuxue" (the back-heart Shen-re

Intracranial investigation of piriform cortex epilepsy during odor presentation.

The piriform cortex (PC) is part of the olfactory system, principally receiving input from the lateral olfactory tract and projecting to downstream components of the olfactory network, including the amygdala. Based on preclinical studies, PC is vulnerable to injury and can be easily kindled as an onset site for seizures. While the role of PC in human epilepsy has been studied indirectly and the subject of speculation, cases of demonstrated PC seizure onset from direct intracranial recording are rare. We present a pediatric patient with drug-resistant focal reflex epilepsy and right mesial temp
