Optic Nerve Head and Retinal Abnormalities Associated with Congenital Fibrosis of the Extraocular Muscles.

Congenital fibrosis of the extraocular muscles (CFEOM) is a congenital cranial dysinnervation disorder caused by developmental abnormalities … ss were significantly reduced in CFEOM patients compared to controls (p < 0.005). Situs inversus of retinal vessels was seen in five patients. Our study provides evidence of structural optic nerve and retinal changes in CFEOM. We show for the first time that there are widespread retinal changes beyond the retinal ganglion cells in patients with CFEOM. This study …

Microvascular network alterations in the retina of patients with Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: Although cerebral small-vessel disease has been implicated in the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD), the cerebral microcir … tered microvascular network in the retina (narrower retinal venules and a sparser and more tortuous retinal vessels) compared with matched nondemented controls. These changes in retinal microvasculature may reflect similar pathophysiological processes in cerebral microvasculature in the brains of patients with AD.

[Phenomenology and Clinical Relevance of the Flammer Syndrome].

The Flammer syndrome (FS) describes the phenotype of people with a predisposition for an altered reaction of the blood vessels to stimuli like coldness, emotional stress or high altitude. Frequent symptoms are: cold hands and/or feet, low blood pressure, prolonged sleep onset time, reduced feeling of thirst, increased sensitivity to odour, pain, vibration and certain drugs. SF subjects are often ambitious and successful but also perfectionistic and sometimes brooding. Frequent signs are: altered gene expression, prolonged blood flow cessation in nailfold capillaroscopy after cold provocation,

A prospective observation of influence of anti-VEGF on optic disc vasculature in nAMD patients.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to investigate the short-term changes in relatively normal retinal vessels following anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) therapy in nAMD patients, an area that currently represents a research gap. METHODS: In this prospective study, we enrolled patients newly diagnosed with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) and received standardized monthly anti-VEGF therapy for three months. Follow-ups were conducted at baseline and 1-week, 1-month, 2-months and 3-months post first injection. Assessment indicators included radial peripapillary cap…

Novel Manifestation of Retinal Hemangioblastomas Detected by OCT Angiography in von Hippel-Lindau Disease.

PURPOSE: To elucidate the clinical characteristics of atypical retinal vascular proliferation in patients with von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) disea … ed both types in the same eye. Most flat RHs appeared as retinal hemorrhages or faint flat abnormal retinal vessels in the inner retina on the fundus examination, often within the macula area or peripapillary. In all eyes with flat RHs, OCTA showed abundant blood flow in the lesions. OCT revealed that flat RHs were seen mainly between the retinal nerve fiber laye …

GPR124 regulates hyaloid blood vessel regression and is associated with endothelial-mesenchymal transition.

Transition from the transient hyaloid vasculature to the mature retinal vascular network is a critical step in mammalian eye development. While WNT7B signaling in endothelial cells regulates programmed hyaloid vessel regression, the specific receptors and downstream mechanisms remain poorly defined. Here, we identify GPR124, a ligand-specific co-receptor for WNT7A/B, as a key regulator of this process. Using an endothelial-specific, tamoxifen-inducible Gpr124 knockout mouse model, we show that loss of GPR124 in hyaloid endothelium markedly impairs postnatal hyaloid vessel clearance. Notably, G

Complexities in the Terminology Used for Describing, Diagnosing, and Classifying Retinal Vasculitis: A Scoping Review from the International Uveitis Study Group (IUSG) Retinal Vasculitis Study (ReViSe)-Report 6.

BACKGROUND: Retinal vasculitis (RV) is a complex inflammatory condition that affects the retinal vessels, often presenting as perivascular sheathing, vascular leakage, and occlusion. Despite its well-documented clinical and angiographic features, the definition and classification of RV remain inconsistent across clinical and research settings. This lack of uniformity has led to challenges in diagnosis, management, and understanding of research findings. Thus, this scoping review aims to objectively identify any ambiguity in the terminology of RV and discuss possible reasons for it, laying the …

Hyperspectral Image Mapping Spectrometry for Retinal Oximetry Measurements in Four Diseased Eyes.

We describe the hyperspectral Image Mapping Spectrometer (IMS) which is able to acquire spectral images of the retina with no scanning components. We then utilize this technology to obtain absolute oxygen saturation measurements in four patients with retinal diseases. The IMS acquires spatial and spectral information of a scene in a single camera exposure time. The IMS is attached to the port of a Topcon TRC-50EX funduscopic camera in order to acquire images. The IMS has high spatial (350×350) and spectral sampling (40), and avoids motion artifacts associated with eye movements. Oximetry value

[Double prepapillary arterial loop and arterial occlusion].

The prepapillary vascular loops are rare congenital vascular anomalies. Often unilateral and asymptomatic, they may be complicated by ischemic events by twisting or thrombosis of the loop. We report a rare case of double prepapillary arterial loop complicated by left retinal ischemia due to thrombosis of the loop.
