Prevalence and incidence of antibodies to Borrelia burgdorferi and to tick-borne encephalitis virus in agricultural and forestry workers from Tuscany, Italy.

The ticks Ixodes persulcatus and Ixodes ricinus are the main vectors of both Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato and tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus in Eurasia. Borrelia burgdorferi is the cause of Lyme borreliosis, and TBE is a biphasic meningoencephalitis induced by an arbovirus belonging to the flavivirus family. The principal aims of the current investigation were (i) to determine the frequency of serological evidence of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato and TBE infections in healthy agricultural and forestry workers, (ii) to determine the incidence of seroconversion for antibodies against B…

Thresholds for disease persistence in models for tick-borne infections including non-viraemic transmission, extended feeding and tick aggregation.

Lyme disease and Tick-Borne Encephalitis (TBE) are two emergent tick-borne diseases transmitted by the widely distributed European tick Ixodes ricinus. The life cycle of the vector and the number of hosts involved requires the development of complex models which consider different routes of pathogen transmission including those occurring between ticks that co-feed on the same host. Hence, we consider here a general model for tick-borne infections. We assumed ticks feed on two types of host species, one competent for viraemic transmission of infection, the second incompetent but included a thir…

Lectin binding to gp60 decreases specific albumin binding and transport in pulmonary artery endothelial monolayers.

The effect of albumin binding to cultured bovine pulmonary artery endothelial cell (BPAEC) monolayers on the transendothelial flux of 125I-l … everal lectins were tested for their ability to inhibit 125I-BSA binding and transport. One lectin, Ricinus communis (RCA), reduced 125I-BSA binding by 70% and transport by 40%. Lectin binding patterns in diffuse large cell lymphoma.

The staining reaction of a panel of lectins in paraffin embedded lymph node specimens of diffuse large cell lymphoma was studied in relation to survival. In 47 of 49 patients, varying degrees of lectin binding were observed with Ricinus communis agglutinin (RCA), crude extract of Arachis hypogaea (c-PNA), Concanavalin ensiformis A (Con A), Triticum vulgaris A (WGA) and Phaseolus vulgaris A (PHA). Binding was either absent or only minimal with Pisum sativum A (PSA) and Lens culinaris A (LCA). Two categories of binding were observed: cell surface and cytoplasmic. Cell surface binding was seen in…

Enhancing chlorpyrifos degradation and plant growth through biochar-assisted microbial remediation.

The extensive use of chlorpyrifos (CPF) in agriculture has led to persistent soil contamination, posing serious risks to environmental and h … ned these functions in the presence of CPF. Soil microcosm and pot experiments were conducted using Ricinus communis L. grown in soils spiked with CPF (100 and 200 mg/kg), with and without biochar amendment and bacterial inoculation. Inoculation with K. pneumoniae C78 significantly accelerated CPF dissipation compared with non-inoculated controls, and the …

Vertical transmission rates of Borrelia miyamotoi in Ixodes scapularis collected from white-tailed deer.

Borrelia miyamotoi is a relapsing fever spirochete transmitted by ticks in the Ixodes ricinus complex. In the eastern United States, B. miyamotoi is transmitted by I. scapularis, which also vectors several other pathogens including B. burgdorferi sensu stricto. In contrast to Lyme borreliae, B. miyamotoi can be transmitted vertically from infected female ticks to their progeny. Therefore, in addition to nymphs and adults, larvae can vector B. miyamotoi to wildlife and human hosts. Two widely varying filial infection prevalence (FIP) estimates - 6% and 73% - have been reported previously from t…
