What role does Helicobacter pylori eradication play in gastric MALT and gastric MALT lymphoma?

The concept of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) has been introduced to differentiate biological functions from behavior of nonnodal vs. nodal lymphoid tissues. Lymphomas arising from MALT also behave differently than typical nodal lymphomas. In contrast to other tissues, MALT in the stomach is almost exclusively a result of Helicobacter pylori infection. Thus, MALT is part of the host defense against the pathogen H. pylori. Consequently, lymphomas arising from gastric MALT may be a clonal evolution starting from the infection. In low-grade gastric MALT lymphoma, cure of the infection m

Peritumoral subarachnoid hemorrhage in microsurgical transitional interface type meningioma: may the interface play a role?

The evidence of an intracranial hemorrhage from a meningioma, in comparison with bleeding from different intracranial tumours, is very infrequent. The pathophysiological mechanisms that can explain the possibility of bleeding from meningiomas have not been yet completely clarified. We report a case of a left parasagittal meningotheliomatous meningioma, situated in the premotor cortex, presenting with a peritumoral hemorrhage, at the interface between the meningioma and the brain parenchyma, and strictly confined within the subarachnoid space. A detailed immunohystochemical study of the tumour

Calcium-dependent potassium channels play a critical role for burst termination in the locomotor network in lamprey.

1. The possible involvement of calcium-dependent potassium channels (KCa) in the termination of locomotor bursts was investigated by administration of a specific blocker, apamin, in the lamprey spinal cord in vitro. The effects were examined by recording the efferent activity in ventral roots and by intracellular recording from interneurons and motoneurons. During fictive locomotion induced by N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA), apamin was found to affect both the frequency of bursting and the regularity of the locomotor pattern. 2. At the single cell level, NMDA can induce pacemaker-like membrane po

Actin microfilaments play a critical role in endocytosis at the apical but not the basolateral surface of polarized epithelial cells.

Treatment with cytochalasin D, a drug that acts by inducing the depolymerization of the actin cytoskeleton, selectively blocked endocytosis of membrane bound and fluid phase markers from the apical surface of polarized MDCK cells without affecting the uptake from the basolateral surface. Thus, in MDCK cell transformants that express the VSV G protein, cytochalasin blocked the internalization of an anti-G mAb bound to apical G molecules, but did not reduce the uptake of antibody bound to the basolateral surface. The selective effect of cytochalasin D on apical endocytosis was also demonstrated

Does the epithelium play a central role in the immune function of rhinopharyngeal tonsils? An immunocytochemical and ultrastructural study.

Enlarged adenoids from 10 children with chronic rhinitis and otitis media with effusion have been studied immunocytochemically and ultrastructurally, to better define the possible role of the epithelium and the dendritic accessory cells in the immune activation of lymphoid cells, and provide further insight into the pathogenesis of the disease. The presence within the columnar epithelium of lymphocytes positive for CD8 antigen, and which electron microscopically have been found frequently apposed to degenerating epithelial cells suggests that the latter cells are targets for cytotoxic activity

Immunohistochemical staining of the human anterior segment. Evidence that resident cells play a role in immunologic responses.

We examined human corneoscleral tissue for cells that are phenotypically similar to known antigen-presenting cell (APC) populations. Antigen-presenting cells are involved in the uptake and processing of antigen for presentation to T lymphocytes, thereby playing a central role in induction of the immune response. The recognition of antigen by T lymphocytes requires that an APC express major histocompatibility complex class II molecules. Using immunoperoxidase staining techniques, the presence of cells expressing class II glycoproteins and T-cell subsets were determined. The staining patterns of

Geographical variations in the occurrence of leprosy: possible roles played by nutrition and some other environmental factors.

The considerable variation in leprosy prevalence among 35 villages and field areas in South India was compared with variations in their socioeconomic and nutritional conditions. Using villages/field areas and aggregates thereof as observational units, leprosy prevalence rates were found to be significantly lower in field areas than in villages. Moreover, there was a significant correlation between the occurrence of malnutrition in children 1 to 4 years of age and the prevalence of leprosy. The possible association between the occurrence of malnutrition in childhood and leprosy is discussed in

Complement C3a plays a role in diabetic cardiomyopathy mainly via C3aR-ERK-PANoptosis pathway.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM) is one of the leading causes of death in diabetic patients. However, the pathogenesis of DCM remains incompletely understood, and effective targeted therapies are lacking. This study aims to investigate the role of complement C3a in the development of DCM, providing a novel theoretical foundation for its precise prevention and treatment. METHODS: Eight-week-old male C57BL/6 J mice were injected with streptozotocin (STZ) to induce a diabetes model for 26 weeks. The two intervention groups were injected with C3a receptor antagonist (SB290157, 30 mg/kg/d

The Transcription Factor 12 of Basic Helix-Loop-Helix Plays an Essential Role in Retinal Health.

PURPOSE: To study a non-redundant role of Tcf12 in retinal health. METHODS: A loss-of-function mutation in Tcf12 was identified by applying optical coherence tomography (OCT) to a forward genetic pipeline. CRISPR/Cas9-generated Tcf12ra/ra mice, expressing a replacement allele ("ra") were used to validate the findings from the mutagenesis screen. Retinal morphology was assessed using OCT, fundus photography, histology, and immunohistochemistry. Retinal function was evaluated by electroretinography (ERG). Bulk RNA sequencing and proteomic analyses were performed, with select targets validated b

ER-associated degradation pathway protein SEL1L plays an evolutionarily conserved role in platelet adhesion.

SEL1L is a well-known protein in the ER-associated degradation (ERAD) pathway. While it is known to be expressed in platelets, SEL1L has never been shown to play an active role. Here, we present evidence that SEL1L regulates platelet function. We first identified SEL1L through the study of Atypical Equine Thrombasthenia (AET), an autosomal recessive platelet disorder found in thoroughbred horses. A missense variant in SEL1L (c.1810A>G p.Ile604Val) was found in AET-affected horses, which we show is associated with decreased protein expression. SEL1L is intracellular in equine platelets and loca

Small peptides play a key role as messengers in plant growth, development and abiotic stress resistance.

Against the backdrop of global environmental change, plant growth and development face multiple challenges, and a range of abiotic stresses seriously affect their normal growth. In recent years, plant small peptides (SPs)-widely defined as peptides of fewer than 100 amino acids-have emerged as important signaling molecules at the forefront of stress response strategies, playing a key role in regulating plant growth, development, and stress adaptation. This paper reviews the classification of small peptides and their effects on plant growth and development, with a particular focus on the dynami

Increased semaphorin, neuropilin, and plexin expression plays a role in recovery after traumatic brain injury.

One of the leading causes of death and disability globally, affecting people of all ages, is traumatic brain injury (TBI). Damage to neural tissues associated with TBI can be classified into two categories: primary damage caused by direct mechanical forces resulting from trauma and secondary damage characterized by long-term neuroinflammation resulting from the molecular response of tissues and cells following primary injury. Although the effects of semaphorin (Sema) molecules on neural repair and regeneration are known, their role in the secondary injury process after TBI remains unclear. Sem

Interleukin-34-Induced Arg1+ Macrophages Play a Key Role in Breast Cancer Brain Metastasis.

UNLABELLED: Brain metastases occur in up to 40% of patients with stage IV breast cancer, and the cerebellum is a common site for metastases in HER2-positive breast cancer. We developed a syngeneic, immunocompetent mouse model of breast cancer brain metastases (BCBM) by stereotactically injecting murine breast cancer organoids into the cerebellum. Spatial transcriptomics on these brain metastases revealed that breast cancer cells produce interleukin-34 (IL34), which induces ARG1+ macrophages at the invading edge of metastases. IL34 expression in human brain metastasis samples was measured in tw

NINJ1 plays a vital role in the release of neutrophil extracellular traps during acute lung injury.

Excessive neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) formation is a significant contributor to acute lung injury (ALI), making its inhibition a novel therapeutic avenue to improve outcomes. In this study, we revealed that a novel pore-forming protein ninjurin-1 (NINJ1) was highly expressed in pro-inflammatory neutrophil subpopulations during ALI, using public single-cell RNA sequencing and hotspot analysis. Furthermore, we demonstrated that the NINJ1 oligomerization was essential for the NET release in neutrophils from both acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) patients and ALI mice. Genetic a

CD4 Molecule Plays an Important Role in the Inflammatory Response Induced by Japanese Encephalitis Virus Infection.

Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) is an important flavivirus that causes zoonotic and arboviral diseases. Infection with JEV not only induces acute central nervous system (CNS) infectious diseases but also leads to reproductive disorders. Currently, research on the pathogenic mechanism of JEV has mainly focused on CNS inflammation caused by infection, while studies on the pathogenic mechanism of JEV targeting the reproductive system are relatively scarce. This study used TM3 cells as a model to investigate the regulatory role of the CD4 molecule in JEV infection, the STAT1 signaling pathway, a
