Transport and Plugging Behavior of Viscoelastic Suspensions in Fractured Tight Reservoirs.

Natural or hydraulic fractures in reservoirs can lead to conformance control issues and poor reservoir confinement, making fracture plugging an essential strategy for controlled fluid flow. This work has investigated the dynamics of solid particle transport and plugging behavior in fractured tight reservoirs using high- and low-permeability sand packs. Two distinct fluid systems have been studied, a polymer-solid suspension and a nanoparticle-viscoelastic surfactant suspension. Three key injection parameters were investigated: the viscosity of the carrier fluid, the concentration of the inject…

Spatio-temporal modelling of Leishmania infantum infection among domestic dogs: a simulation study and sensitivity analysis applied to rural Brazil.

BACKGROUND: The parasite Leishmania infantum causes zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis (VL), a potentially fatal vector-borne disease of canids and humans. Zoonotic VL poses a significant risk to public health, with regions of Latin America being particularly afflicted by the disease. Leishmania infantum parasites are transmitted between hosts during blood-feeding by infected female phlebotomine sand flies. With a principal reservoir host of L. infantum being domestic dogs, limiting prevalence in this reservoir may result in a reduced risk of infection for the human population. To this end, a pri…

Insecticide susceptibility status of Phlebotomus argentipes and polymorphisms in voltage-gated sodium channel (vgsc) gene in Kala-azar endemic areas of West Bengal, India.

Rational use of insecticides, as advocated by World Health Organisation, plays a crucial role for vector control in eliminating visceral leishmaniasis from endemic countries. Emergence and spread of resistance among vector sand flies is of increasing concern for achieving these goals. Information on insecticide susceptibility status of sand fly populations and potential association between the former and polymorphisms in the insecticide target genes is important for formulating proper vector control measures. The present study was designed to evaluate the susceptibility status of vector sand f…

First record of Phlebotomus sergenti (Diptera: Psychodidae) in China and its potential epidemiological implications.

BACKGROUND: Leishmaniasis is a severe parasitic disease transmitted by sand fly bites. Phlebotomus sergenti is a principal vector of Leishmania tropica, causing anthroponotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL) across the Mediterranean, North Africa, South Asia, and West Asia. The Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, located in northwestern China, is a well-recognized endemic focus of visceral leishmaniasis (VL), with sporadic cutaneous leishmaniasis cases also documented in the region. Nevertheless, Ph. sergenti has never been reported in China prior to this study. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Fie…

Leishmania major virulence attenuation in vitro: An old conundrum revisited in the omics era.

BACKGROUND: It has been known for decades that long-term cultivation of Leishmania in vitro frequently leads to a loss of virulence, which is attributed to the selective advantage of avirulent subpopulations that outgrow the virulent ones. In the case of L. major, avirulent parasites retained the ability, albeit reduced, to develop nearly normally in sand fly vectors; however, they could not induce lesions in BALB/c mice. Residual persistence in the inguinal lymph nodes permitted re-isolation and subsequent additional murine passages of these flagellates. While a parasite line obtained after f…

Humic acid enhances the co-transport of colloids and phosphorus in saturated porous media.

Phosphorus (P) has been widely recognized as a substance that is difficult to transport due to its tendency to become easily fixed in the so … y. Moreover, HCs facilitated the transport ability of the MC-P mixture through the saturated quartz sand column. In a 0.1 M NaCl solution, the MC-P mixture is nearly completely adsorbed on the surface of quartz sand, with a penetration rate of only 0.5%. In contrast, the HC-MC-P mixture can evidently penetrate further at a rate of 26.1%. The transport …

Implication of vector characteristics of Phlebotomus argentipes in the kala-azar elimination programme in the Indian sub-continent.

BACKGROUND: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL), also known as kala-azar in the Indian sub-continent (ISC), is a major public health concern in Bangladesh, India, and Nepal, where it is caused by Leishmania donovani transmitted by the sand fly Phlebotomus argentipes. Various ecological parameters including air temperature, rainfall, wind speed, relative humidity, soil moisture, pH, and organic carbon are known to influence the oviposition of female sand flies, as well as the survival and development of larvae. However, more detailed knowledge on vector behavior, such as biting times, breeding places, …

Asymptomatic dogs are highly competent to transmit Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum chagasi to the natural vector.

We evaluated the ability of dogs naturally infected with Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum chagasi to transfer the parasite to the vector and the factors associated with transmission. Thirty-eight infected dogs were confirmed to be infected by direct observation of Leishmania in lymph node smears. Dogs were grouped according to external clinical signs and laboratory data into symptomatic (n=24) and asymptomatic (n=14) animals. All dogs were sedated and submitted to xenodiagnosis with F1-laboratory-reared Lutzomyia longipalpis. After blood digestion, sand flies were dissected and examined for th…

Tungiasis - A Janus-faced parasitic skin disease.

Tungiasis is a parasitic skin disease caused by the penetration of female sand fleas (Tunga penetrans). It is acquired when people walk barefoot or rest on soil, where sand fleas have completed the off-host cycle. Tungiasis is a classic poverty-associated disease which belongs to the family of neglected tropical diseases (NTD). It has a Janus-face: while in travellers tungiasis usually is a benign self-limiting skin disease, inhabitants of endemic areas suffer from heavy infestations and severe, frequently debilitating and incapacitating morbidity. We describe the epidemiological and clinical …

Mitochondrial cytochrome b variation in populations of the visceral leishmaniasis vector Lutzomyia longipalpis across eastern Brazil.

A population analysis of peridomestic, light-trapped, field specimens of the phlebotomine sand fly Lutzomyia longipalpis was targeted to six locations representing a geographic transect across eastern Brazil. Mitochondrial cytochrome b gene sequences established the pattern of genetic variation among the populations. Alignment of a 261-basepair region at the 3' end of cytochrome b identified 30 haplotypes and 21 segregating sites from 78 sand flies. Pairwise comparisons indicated statistically significant population structuring between northern and southern populations, as well as structuring …

Cat-contaminated environmental substances lead to Yersinia pseudotuberculosis infection in children.

A 1-year-old boy was infected with Yersinia pseudotuberculosis serotypes 1b and 3, and his 3-year-old brother was infected with Y. pseudotuberculosis serotype 1b; both had drunk water from puddles in a garden of their housing district of Miyoshi City, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan. The Y. pseudotuberculosis serotype 1b and 3 strains isolated from soil from the dried-up puddles and sand and feces from the sandbox proved to be from a stray cat. The restriction endonuclease patterns of the plasmid in each strain of Y. pseudotuberculosis serotypes 1b and 3 were identical. These data provide evidence…

Particle Size Effect of Oyster Shell on Mortar: Experimental Investigation and Modeling.

In order to solve the problem of lack of natural river sand, crushed waste oyster shells (WOS) were used to replace river sand. By replacing 20% river sand, WOS mortar with different particle sizes of WOS were made for the experiment. Through experimental observation, the initial slump and slump flow loss rate were studied. The effects of different particle sizes and curing times on the compressive strength, flexural strength, static elastic modulus, and dry shrinkage of WOS mortar were analyzed. The relationship formulas between the compressive strength, flexural strength, particle size, and …

Use of In Vivo Imaging System Technology in Leishmania major BALB/c Mouse Ear Infection Studies.

Novel treatments for cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) are needed, due to current lack of effective universal treatments, increasing resistance among the parasite, and toxic effects or impracticality of the current therapeutics. Models of direct infection with high number of Leishmania parasites in the current research of CL involving the BALB/c mouse or Golden Syrian Hamster are considered not suitable for the assessment of antileishmanial drug efficacy because of the lack of disease similarities with humans. The saliva of the sand fly vector is known to affect the host response to infection by th…

LBSapSal-vaccinated dogs exhibit increased circulating T-lymphocyte subsets (CD4⁺ and CD8⁺) as well as a reduction of parasitism after challenge with Leishmania infantum plus salivary gland of Lutzomyia longipalpis.

BACKGROUND: The development of a protective vaccine against canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL) is an alternative approach for interrupting the domestic cycle of Leishmania infantum. Given the importance of sand fly salivary proteins as potent immunogens obligatorily co-deposited during transmission of Leishmania parasites, their inclusion in an anti-Leishmania vaccine has been investigated in the last few decades. In this context, we previously immunized dogs with a vaccine composed of L. braziliensis antigens plus saponin as the adjuvant and sand fly salivary gland extract (LBSapSal vaccine)…
